Le genre est la gamme des caractéristiques physiques, biologiques, mentales et comportementales propres à la masculinité et à la féminité et à la différenciation. Selon le contexte, le terme peut se référer au sexe biologique, aux structures sociales sexuelles ou à l'identité de genre. Le sexologue John Money a introduit la distinction terminologique entre le sexe biologique et le genre en 1955. Avant son travail, il était rare d'utiliser le mot genre pour se référer à des catégories grammaticales. Cependant, le sens de l'argent du mot ne s'est pas répandu jusqu'aux années 1970, lorsque la théorie féministe a adopté le concept de distinction entre le sexe biologique et la construction sociale du genre. Aujourd'hui, la distinction est strictement suivie dans certains contextes, en particulier les sciences sociales et les documents écrits par l'Organisation mondiale de la santé. Depending on the context, the term may refer to biological sex, sex-based social structures, or gender identity. Sexologist John Money introduced the terminological distinction between biological sex and gender as a role in 1955. Before his work, it was uncommon to use the word gender to refer to anything but grammatical categories. However, Money's meaning of the word did not become widespread until the 1970s, when feminist theory embraced the concept of a distinction between biological sex and the social construct of gender. Today, the distinction is strictly followed in some contexts, especially the social sciences and documents written by the World Health Organization. In many other contexts, however, even in some areas of social sciences, the meaning of gender has undergone a usage shift to include sex or even to replace the latter word.
