L'utilisation des refrains est particulièrement associée à l'endroit où la structure de la chanson verse-chorus-verse met généralement un refrain dans presque toutes les chansons. Le refrain ou le chorus contraste souvent fortement le verset de manière mélodique, rythmique et harmonieuse, et assume un plus haut niveau de dynamique et d'activité, souvent avec une instrumentation supplémentaire. Chorus form, or strophic form, is a sectional and/or additive way of structuring a piece of music based on the repetition of one formal section or block played repeatedly.
