Sybiha urges intl community to boycott opening ceremony of 2026 Winter Paralympics

2 min read

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) is crossing any moral line to appease Russian war criminals, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha said, commenting on the ban on Ukraine's Paralympic team wearing its national uniform.

"There is no moral low that the IPC bureaucrats would not reach. They are ready to ruin the remains of the Committee's reputation by acting against UNGA resolutions, Ukraine's territorial integrity, and international law, only to please Russian war criminals. We urge the international community, including all countries and national Paralympic committees, to condemn the IPC's immoral actions, including their disgraceful decision to allow blood-stained Russian and Belarusian flags, and to boycott the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Paralympic Games," Sybiha said on X.

He urged the international community to take a clear position and refuse to take part in what he described as the IPC's "laundering" of war crimes through sport.

As reported, the IPC banned Ukraine's ceremonial uniform featuring a map of the country, arguing that the uniform was "political."

The 2026 Winter Paralympic Games will begin on Friday, March 6. The "blue-and-yellow" team has secured 25 quotas for this year's Games. Ukraine will be represented by 35 Paralympians – 25 para-athletes and ten athlete guides. Ukrainians will compete in four sports: para biathlon, para cross-country skiing, para alpine skiing and para snowboarding.
