President and First Lady honor memory of Ukrainians killed by Russia in Bucha
On the fourth anniversary of the liberation of Bucha from Russia, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and First Lady Olena Zelenska honored the memory of Ukrainians killed and tortured by Russia in February and March 2022.
As reported on the Office of the President's website on Tuesday, the Zelenskys placed memorial lamps at the memorial located on the grounds of the Church of St. Andrew the Apostle and All Saints of the Orthodox Churches of Ukraine.
"When the whole world learned about Bucha. About Ukrainians brutally killed on the streets of Bucha by Russia. About our people tortured in basements. About those shot on the roads. About adults and children whose bodies were found in graves in Bucha. Everyone saw the horror that Russia and its aggression bring. They saw what Ukraine is actually defending against," Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram on this day.
"Today, on the fourth anniversary of the liberation of Bucha from Russia, we honored the memory of Ukrainians who were killed and tortured there. We remember and will not forget what Russia did. Every Russian murderer, torturer, and terrorist must answer for every crime against our people. Blessed memory to everyone whose life was taken by Russia, to all those who died in Bucha and throughout Ukraine at the hands of Russia," the Head of the Ukrainian State emphasized.
The memory of the fallen Ukrainians was also honored by the leaders and representatives of the parliaments of Austria, Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Great Britain, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Finland, Croatia, the European Parliament, and the NATO and OSCE parliamentary assemblies.
Memorial lamps were placed at the memorial by residents of Bucha. The President and First Lady spoke with them and expressed their condolences over the loss of their relatives and loved ones.
Russia held Bucha under occupation for 33 days – from February 27 to March 31, 2022. During this time, 561 civilians were killed, including 12 children.
