I would like to consider moving Indev and Infdev Java version pages to use a timestamp based naming scheme instead of the current count of uploads in a day naming scheme. Indev and Infdev versions were not given proper titles by Notch. The current scheme we use on the Minecraft Wiki is, for example "Indev 0.31 20100204-2" where the -2 indicates it was the second upload on February 4th, 2010. The timestamp naming scheme for this same version is "Indev 20100204-2227" since it was released at 22:27 UTC time on February 4th, 2010. This naming scheme is used by Omniarchive, Betacraft, Codex-Ipsa, and others who still play in these versions and for good reason. Due to poor records, we don't know how many times Indev/Infdev was reuploaded on many days and archivers are still discovering new versions. This creates a nightmare when trying to reference a specific version. For example, on January 31st, 2010, using the Omniarchive index we know of one archived version, two confirmed lost versions, and two other versions that might exist or might not. Right now, we only have a page on the archived version (Indev 0.31 20100131) but we should add pages for the first two confirmed lost versions which will change this page to become "Indev 0.31 20100131-3". If another of these potentially existent uploads is found then we'll have to change it to "Indev 0.31 20100131-4" and then maybe "Indev 0.31 20100131-5" if we find another. The timestamp naming scheme doesn't have this inconsistency. If a new version is found, the timestamp name remains the same. Consistent version names is a concern for me trying to create pages that reference the MC Wiki from the MCDF Wiki. It is a concern for others as well who might write down the name of an Indev or Infdev version only for it to later refer to a different version in the future. I think that moving the Indev and Infdev pages to use the timestamp naming scheme will help reduce confusion about these versions --Bluecrab2 (talk) 01:04, 4 December 2024 (UTC)

 Strong support those versions sound like a mess and that is a very sane solution. -- 👁 Image

 Weak support per MarkusRost, but I'm not sure if my opinion really counts here when I'm really not sure... -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  01:11, 4 December 2024 (UTC)

 Strong support as having dealt with indexed disambiguation previously within omniarchive was a nightmare, and i am very glad we switched to timestamp-based disambiguation. Ouroya (talk) 01:28, 4 December 2024 (UTC)

 Strong support per ouroya and MarkusRost. This should help eliminate any confusion and prevent further issues arising from the current scheme. Claire (talk) 02:25, 4 December 2024 (UTC)

 Strong support per ouroya, MarkusRost and Claire. Switching to timestamps would help future proof the wiki in the event of a new indev version being discovered. Magikarp129 (talk) 05:34, 4 December 2024 (UTC)

 Support As historically the main maintainer of these pages I agree with the proposal reasons.  Nixinova T  C   11:47, 7 December 2024 (UTC)
Comment: talking with staff on the Minecraft Wiki Discord, they confirmed enough time has elapsed that this forum succeeded with unanimous support! Thank you all for helping pass this change :D
With the help of Omniarchive, we compiled a list of correct moves to make to bring Indev and Infdev to use the new naming scheme. This will make the pages match the names used by Omniarchive, Betacraft, etc.:
  • Indev 0.31 20091223-1 -> Indev 0.31 20091223-0040
  • Indev 0.31 20091223-2 -> Indev 0.31 20091223-1457
