The Tutorial namespace has been implemented. - Harristic / Talk 👁 Image

There have been multiple proposals about creating tutorial namespaces (Tutorial:, Dungeons tutorial:, Legends tutorial: and assosiated talk NSes). In recent months, there seems to be a turn in sentiment towards tutorial NS on Discord. Therefore, I propose this be discussed again. To summarize the arguments:

  • Tutorials are different. They do not have the same format, tone, style and quality standards as mainspace articles.
  • We have already committed ourselves in organizing tutorials in subpages. Realistically, subpages have the same effect to namespace but namespace being a MediaWiki feature is better (see below).
    • It is argued that putting tutorials in a namespace shoves them aside and prevents improvements to tutorials. I would counter that a) putting tutorials to another NS doesn't really hinder improvements in any way, and b) the current subpage structure is not much different than NS in terms of "shoving it aside".
  • Clearing out tutorials makes mainspace purer, i.e. by only allowing articles about descriptions of actual features, events and things in mainspace, we are now setting up a distinction between facts and opinions. This arguably is better in organization.
  • NS allows more accessible searching in tutorials and allows a "random tutorial" feature.
  • This isn't necessarily an argument, but PT, DE and ZH have all since happily added tutorial NS.

Please share any opinions and ideas you have on this! --GIM Dianliang233 (talk) 00:28, 17 November 2024 (UTC)

Support – Minor correction: DE doesn't have a Tutorial namespace; it does have "Technik" namespace which previously was (and still kinda is) a separate wiki, but it does contain tutorial-like content. There's a separate page "Anleitungen" which contains similar pages to the English wiki, and that one still uses subpages. However the new Tutorial namespace on the English wiki could use the same skin as our Technik namespace, it'd be quite fitting I think. | violine1101 (talk) 00:38, 17 November 2024 (UTC)

Very strong support creating a tutorial namespace. Tutorials has almost 500 non-redirect subpages, meaning we have more tutorial pages than Earth and Story Mode namespaces have pages combined! They absolutely deserve their own namespace.

Oppose "Dungeons tutorial" and the other spinoff namespaces, I don't think we need an extra tutorial namespace there. Only Dungeons:Tutorials exists and it does not have a lot of subpages. Those tutorials could either remain in the spinoff namespace or get moved into the main tutorial namespace. -- 👁 Image

Re "Dungeons tutorial": This works also: have every tutorial in the Tutorial: NS and have Tutorials and Dungeons:Tutorials as index pages. GIM Dianliang233 (talk) 00:52, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
I have no idea why we have tutorials as subpages in the first place. Is there some big problem in having them as first-class articles? RuMCW has it that way. — BabylonAS 09:37, 17 November 2024 (UTC)

I'm confused, I'm very strongly supporting the addition of a dedicated tutorial namespace. -- 👁 Image

Umm... There's just one little problem. Where does the main tutorial page go? How will there still be a quick link back to it from all the tutorial pages? I'm neutral so far. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  14:30, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
I think it would be fine to keep the main page in the main space like Minecraft Dungeons and the other games are as well. -- 👁 Image

Support - I have little to add here, tutorials are already separated from the rest of mainspace via subpages, may as well use a namespace to make that a more proper separation. Maybe we could have a unique theme for that namespace (I like unique themes if you couldn’t tell). - Harristic / Talk 👁 Image

Strong support unique theme. While themes are usually drawn from a game's logo as far as I can tell, tutorials are made by the community, and so a theme can also be made by the community. Just saying, a little bonus. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  01:31, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
We could probably just reuse the theme that the German Technik Wiki uses for the Tutorial namespace. | violine1101 (talk) 20:02, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
Hmm, that looks a lot like the Legends theme. (Just saying) -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  20:55, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
Because (as I just noticed) we accidentally had the wrong namespace number in our mobile css. The Technik namespace currently has no mobile theme. -- 👁 Image

I'd like that, it's a very cool theme and it fits well enough. - Harristic / Talk 👁 Image

Fancy themes shouldn't be the reason for namespaces to proliferate — though in this case it could be a way to circumvent the issue of reusing the regular namespace's theme for tutorials targeting spin-offs. BabylonAS 20:14, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
My comment doesn't give a theme as the reason for the namespace to exist. - Harristic / Talk 👁 Image
