Jacek Wołkowicz[2][3][note 1] better known as Gnembon, is a software engineer[1] at Mojang Studios and a Minecraft modder. He created the Carpet Mod, which "allows you to take full control of what matters from a technical perspective of the game."
Gnembon has a YouTube channel where he used to upload item farming and modding videos. Since joining Mojang however, he has ceased to upload videos to his YouTube channel,[4] as he thinks it's unfair to make videos about farms with insider knowledge.[5]
Wołkowicz attended the Warsaw University of Technology from 2002 to 2007 where he got a M.Sc. in Computer Science.[2] He then attended Dalhousie University from 2007 to 2013 and received a Ph.D. in Computer Science.[2]
After graduating, he joined LeadSift as a Research Engineer in 2013, and then as the Director of Research until 2017. He then worked as the Director of Research at Dash Hudson from 2017 to 2021.[6] During this time, he also worked part-time as an Adjunct Professor and Sessional Instructor at Dalhousie.[2] In November 2021, he moved to Sweden and joined Mojang.[4]
Wołkowicz is capable of coding in both Java and C++ engines. He also knows the Python programming language.
Before Gnembon joined Mojang, he was an active member of the technical Minecraft server SciCraft. He presented at MINECON Live 2019 with some SciCraft members on a community panel after the show, about the benefits of redstone automation as a form of Minecraft gameplay.[7]
After he joined Mojang, Gnembon worked together with Kingbdogz to add the sculk catalyst.[8] He also worked on the armor trims,[9][10] camels,[11] and suggested the addition of explorer maps to other villages.[12][13] He worked on adding the crafter[14] and the /tick command, both of which were originally features from his mod Carpet Mod.[15]
Gnembon has worked on several game drops, particularly Armored Paws and The Garden Awakens,[16] as well as the Poisonous Potato Update.[17] He also implemented netherite horse armor.[citation needed]
- Wołkowicz's nickname was taken from a character in a book he was reading for school,[18] which is most likely Gnębon Puczymorda from Szewcy by Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz. It was first used as his username in the video game Heroes of Might and Magic II or III. He later decided to keep this name for his YouTube channel, as a way of separating his gaming life from his personal life.[19]
- When Wołkowicz first started playing Minecraft, he was afraid of squid for several months.[20]
- Wołkowicz has a son, who he taught to use a mouse and keyboard by playing Minecraft.[21]
- Gnembon thinks that villager trading needs to be redesigned from scratch, in the form of quest-like discoveries that encourage exploration and progression.[22]
