If you read the wiki, you will notice that pages get updated with new information all the time. For example, every time an update to the Minecraft franchise happens, all of the related pages are updated. But, how does this update process work?

Editing

[edit source]

Editing, also known as updating a page on this wiki, is the action of changing its contents to newer ones. Changing a page's content means that every user, including people who do not have an account on this wiki, and every editor can see the new content you put on the page.

Here, let's look at a really simple example.

  • Let's say there is some page, like Example v1.
  • Maybe it's a page listing items that require 3 iron ingots to craft. Keep in mind, this is just an example. Therefore, the actual page doesn't link to anything.
  • Let's say the example page talks about pickaxes.
  • Now, you realize that it's not mentioning axes, even though it should.
  • Well, you can fix the page so it does.
  • You click on the Edit source button at the top of the page, and decide to add the information about axes.
  • Now the page looks like Example v2.
  • Now, let's say you realize that the axe is not appropriate on our example page. So, you decide to edit the page again. This results in Example v3.

If you want other people to see your edits, it is suggested that you create an account, and edit your userpage.

Editing covers stuff like creating a page, modifying the contents of pages, and modifying the styles of pages.

How to edit

[edit source]

To edit a page, click the Edit or Edit source button in the navbar.

You can also edit an article by clicking on need help fixing the article if there is a gear on the top of the page!

Wiki navbar

[edit source]

The desktop version of this wiki has various tabs on the right side of the navbar (at the top of the webpage). Every page of this wiki has the following buttons on the right side of the navbar:

  • Read
    • Which isn't necessary, since the left tabs link to the same place.
  • Edit
    • This button only appears in some namespaces.
    • When clicked, this opens the visual editor, a WYSIWYG editor. This makes the page become an editor. So, if you are editing a cell in a table, you will see your text cursor in the cell.
  • Edit source
    • If you have permission to edit the page.
    • When clicked this opens the source editor, a more efficient tool which allows you to edit the code[note 1]. Some of the wiki's features are only available through the source editor.
    • If you don't have permission, this will be View source instead. Viewing the source-code still opens the source editor, but the editor's text area does not allow you to change its contents.
  • View history
  • Watch or Unwatch
  • This button looks like a star.
  • When clicked, the page will be put on your watchlist, where you will receive notifications if this page gets edited.
    • If you click it again, it will be removed from your watchlist.
  • Move
    • If you have permission to move the page.
  • Refresh
    • Which purges the page.

Please don't feel the need to master either the visual editor or the source editor. You can learn at your own pace. Any contribution you make is good, as long as you try to follow the style guide and the wiki rules.

Edit summaries

[edit source]

Please remember to leave an edit summary for each edit you make to a page on this wiki. Edit summaries help other editors to understand the intentions and meaning of your edit. Edit summaries can be as long and as wordy as you want.

What if my changes get undone?

[edit source]

There's nothing to fear about this, sometimes an editor might not know changes were made in good-faith and misunderstood the intention.

In these cases, the best action to do is to go to the Talk tab, which opens the discussion page for the page you've been editing, and post your reasoning to add your information (using the Add topic tab-button on the talk page).

Some editor will end up noticing the topic and reply to you, and tell you the reason of removal, or suggest you to rewrite it to include it on the page.

  1. "code" refers to the source-code of the page, which is always written in the wikitext language
