Java Edition account migration from Mojang to Microsoft accounts is announced. The Migrator Cape is revealed as a reward for migrating.[1]

Purchases of Minecraft: Java Edition made on or after this date use Microsoft accounts and are ineligible for migration.[2]

The migration period starts, with a limited number of accounts being allowed to migrate. From here, accounts are granted the ability to migrate in batches until all accounts have it.[3]
July 9, 2021
The Migrator Cape is implemented and given to players who have already migrated. Players who migrate past this point receive it immediately.[4]
November 24, 2021
All accounts that haven't yet received it are given the ability to migrate.[5]
September 19, 2023
The migration period comes to an end. As of this date, players can no longer migrate or obtain the Migrator cape.[6]
In addition to the Migrator Cape, players who migrated were originally supposed to receive veteran capes; there would have been a different veteran cape "for each year [they] have played Java Edition".[7][8] At the end of the migration process, veteran capes were jokingly stated to be "a lie" by a Mojang employee.[9] In 2025, Marc Watson explained that veteran capes were scrapped due to technical limitations.[10]
