The map video is outdated, and since a ton of map features have been changed, I tihnk it should be removed or at least updated. Suggestions?
I've already used the map before and i load a few more using empty maps, then the maps just stop working after a while. Why is this? (DarkWolfInsanity)

I've got the same issue. Anyone know how to resolve this on SMP? Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
I push the right click button but still is not working and i have moved a lot it was created on earth nut not working on earth. Is it my controls? And i have restarted so it is ticking me off this is 1.6.2
Yes, it's not right-click, it's Use Item/Place Block. Note to all editors: When players redefine Use Item/Place Block, it does not affect GUIs. When you put "right-click" in a page, players who have redefined that control will open their inventories, right-click, and get confused when nothing happens. The same goes for left-click and the Attack/Destroy control. For example, I've been playing Minecraft for four or five years now, and I've redefined those controls since the beginning. There's not really any chance of me automatically thinking "use item key" when I read "right-click". -- eekee -- 86.31.233.90 13:38, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
This also occurring to me.
This is also occurring for me, this feature is basically so broken you may as well remove the Wiki page - unless there's something I've missed. This feature appears gone. I have a world I've been building since 2008, I thought I'd replace a couple of map chunks from a museum I have (documents the world) and was horrified by what I found:
So unless I've missed something - this feature is now basically gone? ~~thefraj~~
I'm having maps stop moving the player marker or update to show new exploration after awhile, only recourse seems to be throw them away and start a new one?
Is this a bug? the area that i want to map is entirely at the corners of four maps no matter how many i make. 1.6.2 96.61.160.59 00:55, 14 July 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the Video post, I'll check it out. Meanwhile, I'd Hope that this aspect of Maps' inherent "behavior," then would help find-edges, to make connecting-edges of different Maps (at the same Zoom level, of course), easier, as opposed to a Very careful matter probably involving the F3, Debug screen info. to get- co-ordinates, before-Crafting, Every single intended New, Map area to border any-other Map, and seamlessly- overlap And /Or connect 50.1.134.10 01:27, 14 December 2013 (UTC) Yilante.
It appears that zoomed maps were changed in the snapshot 14w31a such that they will all snap to a grid. Someone created a ticket in the bug tracker (MC-64909) but there is no mention of the change in the snapshot descriptions or here on the wiki. There are comments in the bug tracker suggesting this is an intentional change. Can someone update the wiki so that we have documentation or an explanation on how the grid is laid out and where to find its edges? Zmcminer (talk) 16:13, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
After a bit of experimenting I think it works as follows: The first zoom 0 map is centered at 0,0 so it's edges are at +-64,+-64. The top left corner of this first map is at -64, -64. This becomes the "most important point" for mapping. It will be the corner point for all 4 maps to the NE, SE, NW, SW of it *at all zoom levels*. So to start mapping, make 4 maps at level 0. One at -60 -60, one at -70, -60, one at -70, -70, and one at -60, -70. Then enlarge these to the sizes you want. From there it should be more obvious how to proceed. One caveat is that out of habit I always make my first map at exactly 0,0. So it's possible that this could effect things. This is all with the latest stable 1.8 version. --Ntriplett (talk) 19:38, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
Wiki does not help!!
If you are zooming out, and take the zoomed out map out of the crafting table WITH a shift click, it will stay the same. Basically wasting 8 paper. Picking the map up with the cursor seems to be the solution.
Other point, maps do not save info on zooming out. You will have to explore again.--83.117.55.184 07:37, 23 April 2014 (UTC)
I know this is minor, but I do believe we should stick to calling them "sheets" of paper. Hope nobody thinks I'm being too nitpicky.--GmMkr (talk) 19:02, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
I made a map in SSP and zoomed it out three times, to make it a level 3 map. Then I made two clones of it, and they all correctly showed shared explored area. But when I then zoomed out one of them again to make it a level 4 map, all maps behaved as individual maps from then on. Both clones of the original map were also not connected to eachother anymore. Every map kept it's own map data, and exploring new areas had only effect on the map I was holding, eventhough they were clones before. Does this mean zooming out breaks clones, or is this a bug (if so, is this something they will fix)? Can I get around this problem, or do I have to avoid zooming out cloned maps for now? I wanted to add a note to the page, but I wasn't sure about this. Thanks โ Jack McKalling [ ๐ Jack McKalling's User page

Someone reverted my edit when I categorized the crafting recipie as "tools" to add it to Crafting/Tools. Why aren't maps tools?67.160.25.176 22:03, 20 May 2015 (UTC)
It appears that when a player creates a new drawn map, south is on top? East is to the left, West is to the right, and North is the bottom, as the character holds it. Is this correct? If this is the case, should this be noted on this page? In US, North is usually at the top of any RL map, not sure about maps in other countries. ---AlfredCloutiertalk 13:31, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
Could a new section "color shematics" be added? It lists what color the map will display in accordance with the block. For example, leaves are displayed in dark green, grass blocks are displayed in light green, myceliums purple, stones grey... 101.5.125.204 12:43, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
So I uploaded File:Map Zoom BE.png and File:Map Position Marker BE.png, with the hopes that it'll help with adding those in, but i gotta go for now, bye โ Sealbudsman talk/contr 20:59, 10 April 2016 (UTC)
It seems that in the Bedrock Edition, if you have an Overworld locator map out in the Nether, a red marker will show your relative location in the Overworld as you move around in the Nether. Perhaps this behavior should be noted. I'm not good with the words and stuff. --73.225.24.71 01:48, 8 November 2017 (UTC)
I don't consider that documenting that Markers don't work at all in touch devices is documenting a bug, since it is not a bug. It just has not been implemented, as has been explained in the bug report. Thus, it should be documented here, or the wiki will contain deceptive and misguiding information, and touch device users may lose time trying to make Markers work when they will not work at all. --85.155.120.227 21:17, 17 April 2018 (UTC)
Comments are requested on the idea of replacing the Map (disambiguation) page with an expanded {{About}} template at the top of this page. Please discuss at Talk:Map (disambiguation). โ Auldrick (talk ยท contribs) 16:49, 25 April 2018 (UTC)
So while I was reading about the cartography block in the wiki, the usages said something about pin pointing stuff on a map. Now, I keep reading and I see nothing related to that. What is it? And how do you do it?
Note: Iโm on IOS bedrock edition.

---If you mean a locator map they show the location of players Andexter (talk) 15:58, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
I think the update radius is wrong. It's not 128 from my (fully-zoomed-out) experiments, it's 64. Though the fuzzy parts may continue for a few pixels... So uh, the update *diameter* was displayed. Which isn't really quite as useful IMO. More importantly it's misleading to call it the radius.
If the edit belonged on the tutorial page (which I don't believe it does; we can discuss that here if desired), then it should have been moved there, not just removed.
So, please do one of the following:

when playing on a multiplayer realm with near 10 players, a locator map shows more marker colours than listed in this page. they include an normally functioning orange marker, a cyan marker, and a pink marker [almost visually similar to the magenta marker used for the end]. Should we update the image and the page to include these new colours of markers? โ Unsigned comment added by A2K the DeltaWolf (talk โข contribs) at 08:15, 24 January 2021 (UTC). The article has no text about map use in the Nether, only pictures. The maps appear featureless, so it's not clear whether they work at all. Whatever the case, it should be clear in the article whether they work in the Nether or not. --Runamucker (talk) 05:26, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

Previously (1.19.4 definitely, unsure about 1.20) when a named map ("Buried Treasure Map", "Woodland Explorer Map") was on display in an item frame, looking at the map would display the map name in big transparent letters. This feature doesn't exist anymore (1.20.6). 2001:7D0:81DC:3680:11A6:124B:E239:2877 17:51, 4 May 2024 (UTC)
Something that should be explained is that when holding a fully explored map, the edges of the map are unviewable (obstructed by the maps torn edge), but when placing the map into an item frame, the maps display area extends all the way to the edge of the block, revealing the edges. 2001:7D0:81DC:3680:11A6:124B:E239:2877 17:51, 4 May 2024 (UTC)
In Java 1.21.4 it is possible, by placing glass over the void, to create a transparent section of the map, as iJevin demonstrated last December on Hermitcraft SMP for his christmas garlands and wreaths. This applies both in the End and in the Overworld, but does not work in the Nether. Is this a thing on Bedrock? Winderine (talk) 22:37, 12 February 2025 (UTC)
This article is excellent, it provides great information in a very readable format put in clear and easy to understand speech that doesn't sound "dumbed down"
List of Colors attributed to different blocks could be made clear. For example, see reference: https://rebane2001.com/mapartcraft/
I just updated from Java 1.22.8 and found something. Thankfully I did not lose anything, but it could have been a big problem.
Previously (for a number of years) it was possible for item frames to be on a wall, all the way to a floor and for them to hold maps, also extending to the floor. But now, if the floor has a carpet, it conflicts with a wall-mounted map and it breaks both the map and the item frame, dropping them on the ground (carpet). An empty item frame on its own does not break. 2001:7D0:81DC:3680:848E:65CD:90C5:B44A 19:09, 5 October 2025 (UTC)
