On the topic of how Mojang and Microsoft Studios and so forth are presented

[edit source]
Latest comment: 26 July 20173 comments2 people in discussion

Hello HelenAngel, would you be able to verify whether the introductory paragraphs on this page are correct, as far as they go? I'd seen a chart shared from Discord that illustrates that within Microsoft Studios, there is a Minecraft Studio, and that there are five different offices, of which Mojang / Stockholm is one.

I'm also still not sure what the UK, China, Japan and Redmond studios do / what their roles are, aside from having a vague notion that the Redmond one works more with the Bedrock editions. And I assume the China studio works with that government's special requirements, which I can't recall at the moment.

Also I was wondering if Mojang is still Mojang AB, since the acquisition, or is that no more?

Thanks, hope all is well, – Sealbudsman talk/contr 22:34, 5 July 2017 (UTC)

Hi! I went over them and edited the page to reflect it. Mojang AB is still a legal entity, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Microsoft. So all Mojang employees are also Microsoft employees. Stockholm/Mojang is considered the home office of the Minecraft studio- that is where the decisions regarding the Minecraft franchise are made. Jonas Mårtensson & Matt Booty are the heads of the Minecraft studio. The Minecraft studio shares a single studio budget & studio vision between all locations and the heads of the studio report to Phil Spencer, who is the head of Xbox and Microsoft Studios.
The UK office works closely with our platform partners in Europe as well as partner studio 4J Studios. Primary testing and production for the console editions occurs there. The China office works closely with the partner studio NetEase. Japan works closely with our platform partners in Japan/Asia and we will hopefully soon have a community coordinator based out of that office & official livestreams from that office as well. Redmond, like Stockholm, assists with all the editions. Pretty much all teams this point are spread out across both Stockholm & Redmond offices, though Education Edition is developed primarily in Redmond and Java Edition is developed primarily in Stockholm. Hope this helps! Feel free to ping me anytime with questions. :) --HelenAngel (talk) 01:00, 6 July 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, HelenAngel! I have more questions actually, drawing on what you mentioned here:
  1. NetEase licenses which editions for China players?
  2. In the context of the UK + Japan offices, what are 'Platform partners'? that's console edition platforms, or?
  3. In what kinds of ways do Redmond 'assist with' all the editions? And same question about Stockholm.
  4. What does 'single studio vision' mean, practically speaking?
  5. 'Nearly all teams are spread out across both ... offices' -- what teams are you referring to, that are spread out?
  6. For Matt Booty and Jonas Mårtensson, what are their roles?
  7. What kinds of decisions are made by Mojang, and what kinds of decisions are made by Phil Spencer, who the heads of the studio report to?
Thanks for being available to sate my curiosity : ) – Sealbudsman talk/contr 20:03, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
Sure! No problem at all. Answers below.
  1. NetEase develops Java Edition & Pocket Edition for China
  2. In the UK, the partner studio is 4J Studios. In China, the partner studio is NetEase. In Japan, they work with the Japan offices of Sony and Nintendo who are console platform partners.
  3. All sorts of ways- it's hard to define because whenever someone has a problem with really anything we just reach out on our internal channels. Everyone just kind of pitches in and helps each other. It doesn't matter if that's specifically the project you're working on or not, we all chip in to help with whatever anyone needs help with. Also many of us work on franchise-wide initiatives that aren't tied to a specific edition.
  4. We have one studio - the Minecraft studio - with offices all around the world. All offices are aligned in a single studio vision and all have the same high-level goals.
  5. All the internal teams within the studio. So for instance the art team is partially in Stockholm, partially in Redmond. Pretty much every team at this point is spread out across multiple offices. There may be a concentration of a team in one geographical location- for instance the Realms team is primarily in Stockholm but there are folks who work on it in Warsaw and Redmond.
  6. Matt is the CVP (Corporate Vice President, Microsoft) representing Minecraft and Jonas is the CEO (Chief Operating Officer) of Mojang as a subsidiary. Functionally what this means is they are the heads of the Minecraft studio and they work very closely together. If you're talking about corporate reporting structure, technically Jonas reports to Matt and Matt reports to Phil Spencer who is the head of Xbox & Microsoft Studios. Phil Spencer reports to Terry Myerson and Terry reports to Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft.
  7. All decisions are ultimately made by Mojang/Minecraft Studio. The leadership team of the Minecraft Studio consists of folks in Stockholm (Mojang) and folks in Redmond. Decisions are made together as a cohesive unit. Just like in any organization ever, not everyone may personally agree with every single decision ever made but the important part is that everyone has a voice and we have an open door policy where anyone can voice their concerns. It's actually pretty nice, to be honest! :) Of course we get asked to support some stuff from larger Microsoft and then the Minecraft leadership team discusses it and decides whether or not it's right for the brand and if so, how to implement it. Also there are certain folks who are the kind of ultimate approvers of things- for instance, nothing goes in any edition of the Minecraft the game without Jens approving it.
Anytime!:) Happy to help. I also made a really bad, quick, drawing in paint of the org. Basically just imagine a big circle that says Microsoft, a circle inside the Microsoft circle that says Microsoft Studios/XBOX, and inside that MS/XBOX circle there's a circle that says Minecraft Studio. :D –Preceding unsigned comment was added by HelenAngel (talkcontribs). It was never there. The English and Swedish links were both redlinks when I first added those pronunciation keys. I was hoping some kind person would generate the files -- and Dentedharp90041 made the English one : ) The Swedish one may be somewhat more difficult, though, depending how easy it is to find a Swedish text reader? – Sealbudsman talk/contr 22:22, 12 July 2017 (UTC)
Also now that I look at it, the Swedish IPA should probably be used rather than the English IPA... – Sealbudsman talk/contr 22:23, 12 July 2017 (UTC)

Does anyone else think the big graphic with the old avatars (and list of employees) is entirely redundant? I kind of want to get rid of it. – Sealbudsman talk/contr 17:09, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

Tables with avatars

[edit source]
Latest comment: 26 July 20172 comments2 people in discussion

Three things:

  1. I would like to replace old-style avatars with the new-style avatars, where available.
  2. I would like to add a photos from their wiki page (from their Person box) where avatars are unavailable.
  3. I would like to make photos/avatars not-so-tall (maybe x75px high) because otherwise it makes the table unnecessarily giant.

WP:COMMONNAME: usually referred to as just "Mojang". No point having the AB there, it just adds unnecessary length. – Nixinova 👁 Image

The page is locked, so I hope someone with access can incorporate the edit I can't do: The name of Andreas 'hideous' Jörgensen is wrong. It should be Andrea without an S at the end. --45.83.220.205 17:46, 21 January 2021 (UTC)

Game jam games

[edit source]
Latest comment: 7 June 20212 comments2 people in discussion

According to Wikipedia, (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mojang_Studios), Mojang has made numerous other game jam games besides Catacomb Snatch, including "Nuclear Pizza War", "Endless Nuclear Kittens", "Battle Frogs", "Docktor", "Healthcore Evolved" and "Snake Oil Stanley", and there may also be other games they've made for game jams that aren't listed here. I'm wondering whether or not these should be documented in the list of games Mojang has made, since they are Mojang games, but they're not especially noteworthy and there seems to be quite a lot of them. Kayleen Walters is the new head of Mojang

Latest comment: 7 March 20251 comment1 person in discussion

Åsa Bredin has now stepped down, and Kayleen Walters, VP of Microsoft Gaming has taken the role. Not sure on the operational structure of Mojang though, or whether or not Åsa still works at Mojang in any capacity, so I'm unsure of exactly what to edit. If anyone has any further knowledge, it might be wise to amend the page. Source

it is missing the third variant of the mojang logo on the logo image gallery, which is an vertical variant of the square stacked version but instead of the grid for the "MOJANG" letters being a 3x2, is a 2x3, like the IRL 3D logo located on the mojang sweden HQ entrance

--FeedbackBot 22:04, 20 July 2025 (UTC)
That version is not needed. Two logos is enough to suffice. BDJP (t|c) 22:49, 5 October 2025 (UTC)

Pronunciation (2)

Latest comment: 8 August 20254 comments3 people in discussion

If we adopt the English pronunciation, I think the IPA should be changed to /ˈmoʊdʒæŋ/, with the stress on the first syllable. The current writing /moʊˈdʒæŋ/ is neither English nor Swedish pronunciation. --Vesekskiy • 👁 Image

The English pronunciation being treated as the one and only is also just outright false. It's pronounced both ways by Mojang themselves. Grzesiek11 (talk) 09:58, 8 August 2025 (UTC)
Ok apparently it's no longer false as of 2020. That sucks, I hate English. Grzesiek11 (talk) 13:03, 8 August 2025 (UTC)
