Move proposal

I suggest changing this article's name to Villager (old) for consistency with other articles like Stonecutter (old). Also, to make possible for this article to appear when Special:RandomRootpage is used. Supeika (talk) 01:57, 11 June 2021 (UTC)

Nitwits are old villagers

[edit source]
Latest comment: 19 February 20242 comments2 people in discussion

Part of the History section claims that the nitwits in Java Edition are technically considered old villagers in the game's code. That implies that this is actually not a feature that was removed from the game, but rather a feature that was changed. I find this quite confusing, so I'm asking: What do we do about this? --Simanelix (T|C) 06:55, 18 February 2024 (UTC)

The History section doesn't claim anything like that. Green-robed villagers were originally unused, then removed in 1.8, then re-added as nitwits in 1.11. Old villagers as a whole have never been "removed" - 1.14 villagers are just an updated old feature, but the changes were so large that it was best to split old villagers to a separate page.--Capopanzo (talk | contribs) 20:15, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

Old Villager textures in BE

For a reason I explained in Talk:Fox, I saw that the old villager files are technically still in Bedrock Edition's code. Can someone tell me why? 👁 Image

I know this is a year-old topic, but it's because old villagers can still exist in-game from pre-1.11.0 (BE equivalent of 1.14) worlds, though they get instantly converted when the world is opened. According to this page "template worlds" retain the old villagers, though I don't know what they are. --MinecraftExp123(talk|contribs) 11:35, 23 August 2025 (UTC)

Add the removal to history

Old villagers aren't removed, only changed on Java and made unused on Bedrock Gwen Stacy (talk) 12:23, 3 May 2025 (UTC)

Split this page by profession

--FeedbackBot 03:59, 23 August 2025 (UTC)
No, because the concept of professions weren't really a thing before Village & Pillage. Also, the profession information in the current page isn't that long, so splitting isn't really necessary. --MinecraftExp123(talk|contribs) 04:37, 23 August 2025 (UTC)

Replace outdated with outdatedjava.

No, as the old villagers were also in Bedrock Edition before Bedrock Edition 1.10.0. --MinecraftExp123(talk|contribs) 04:36, 23 August 2025 (UTC)

Confusing that there are two articles: this and villager. Why? Also history of this article stops to 1.14 without any notice that it continues at Villager#History. Also splitting a feature to old and new by "a big change" is arbitrary. This page could at least be moved to escaped redlinkVillager/Pre-1.14

--FeedbackBot 11:27, 23 August 2025 (UTC)
They are technically two different mobs in Bedrock Edition, and maybe in Java Edition as well but I'm not sure. Also they have almost nothing in common in terms of mechanics, such as trading, breeding, reputation, etc. Think of it like comparing the original crying obsidian from ages ago used to set spawn and the crying obsidian added in 1.16. --MinecraftExp123(talk|contribs) 11:30, 23 August 2025 (UTC)
Also, the old villagers in Bedrock Edition can still exist, see here. --MinecraftExp123(talk|contribs) 11:33, 23 August 2025 (UTC)

Villager Water Interactions (on Legacy Console but maybe others too)

[edit source]
Latest comment: 24 August 20251 comment1 person in discussion

I don't know if this works on other editions but in older Legacy Console Editions (the oldgens, so Wii U/PS3/PS Vita/Xbox 360 - I don't play 360 but I've seen this work on every other console out of these) if a villager is on fire it will run to the nearest water. I don't know when this was changed (methinks 1.14 when old villagers were removed, I haven't gotten this to work on PS4 edition iirc) or if it's also in equivalent MC Java versions but after a quick ctrl+f I couldn't see this on the page.

Also, villagers always seem to swim up in water. Combined you can literally just light a fire with a water source that has its top block covered next to it and trap villagers in it, lol. Spudpiggy (talk) 07:29, 24 August 2025 (UTC)

I actually found these guys in the super Mario template you get for free if you buy Minecraft on switch.

if you turn off the texture pack, they look like old villagers, just a template, that it. Ok. My theory,is that the map was made before 1.14,and is still using the old code for the villagers. Planty (talk) 01:52, 13 September 2025 (UTC)

History

It is pretty annoying that the history table for villagers is spilt between this page and the main villager page. Why is it done like this anyways, also, Old villager exists on bedrock? in what ways? 👁 Image

I agree, the history table for both villagers and zombie villagers being arbitrarily split simply because Bedrock Edition has them as separate mobs for technical reasons baffles me. The full history should be available on the main Villager page. 👁 Image
