A former group of Pb-Ag mines located in sec. 35, T17S, R39E, MDM, 2.9 km (1.8 miles) SE of Malpais Mesa (coordinates of record), and about 22 km NNW of Darwin (belongs to Darwin District according to Kampf et al., 2016), on private (patented) land within a Bureau of Land Management wilderness land area (Malpais Mesa Wilderness). Owned by the Santa Rosa Mining Co. Operated during the period 1910 to 1950 and about 1953 to about 1955 ?. Land has been donated to the Wilderness area. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 10 meters.

Mineralization is a series of at least 12 veins, hosted in hornfels. The veins are exposed from 100 feet to 700 feet in length and 3 to 4 feet thick. The most abundant are the West-dipping veins. Some Zn-rich primary ore was discovered and being mined in 1955. Controls for ore emplacement included fissures. Associated rocks include diorite and basalt. Local rocks include Tertiary volcanic flow rocks, unit 16 (Northern Mojave Desert).

The mine is within an inlier of the lower limestone member of the Owens Valley Formation, which has been metamorphosed. The inlier is 2,000 feet long and 600 feet wide. It is encircled by Tertiary and Quaternary volcanic rocks consisting of olivine basalt, tuff, tuff breccia, agglomerate, and andesite. Calc-hornfels consists mainly of calcite, quartz and diopside, minor zoisite, garnet, epidote, limonite, and opaque minerals. Minor beds of unsilicated bluish-gray limestone, locally fossiliferous, are interbedded with the calc-hornfels. The inlier is also cut by syeno-diorite porphyry dikes, 2 to 6 feet thick, which strike N70W and dip nearly vertical. Basalt dikes, 2 to 16 feet thick, cut both the limestone and volcanic rocks.

Local geologic structures include a fault. An inlier of calc-hornfels is structurally a horst. The Santa Rosa fault bounds it on the E and another steep fault forms its western boundary. The Santa Rosa fault strikes N and dips 80E. It is a normal fault with the E block downdropped about 250 feet. The most important faults strike N10-20W and dip 30-60SW.

Workings include underground openings comprised of the 352 foot Hesson inclined shaft, several shallower shafts, and about 1,500 feet of drifts and crosscuts with extensive stopes. A 1,800-foot westerly-trending crosscut adit was driven in 1953.
