Formula:
(Na,Ca)2(Si,Al)5O10 · 3H2O
Colour:
White, yellowish to salmon-red
Lustre:
Silky
Hardness:

Specific Gravity:
2.25 - 2.36
Crystal System:
Orthorhombic
Name:
Named in honor of Ferdinand-Pierre-Joseph Gonnard (30 March 1838, Gannat, Allier, France - 16 October 1923, Lyon, Rhône, France), Professor of Mining Engineering at the University of Lyon, France. He wrote mineral summaries of regions of France and earlier found gonnardite, but described it as mesole (thomsonite). He also discovered dumortierite.
Zeolite Group. Natrolite Subgroup.
Most gonnardites have a disordered natrolite framework.

The compositions of and structural relationships between gonnardite and tetranatrolite remain controversial (Artioli and Galli 1999; Evans et al. 2000; Ross et al. 1992; Lee et al. 2006).

Type:
Biaxial (+)
RI values:
nα = 1.514 nβ = 1.515 nγ = 1.52
2V:
Measured: 52° , Calculated: 50°
Max. Birefringence:
δ = 0.006
Based on recorded range of RI values above.

Interference Colours:
The colours simulate birefringence patterns seen in thin section under crossed polars. They do not take into account mineral colouration or opacity.

Michel-Levy Bar The default colours simulate the birefringence range for a 30 µm thin-section thickness. Adjust the slider to simulate a different thickness.

Grain Simulation You can rotate the grain simulation to show how this range might look as you rotated a sample under crossed polars.

Surface Relief:
Moderate
Dispersion:
strong
Optical Extinction:
X = c.
