When taking the geometric mean of more than 110 benchmarks on Windows 11 vs. Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, the Linux-based operating system was about 9% faster than Microsoft Windows 11 Pro as shipped by HP on this Z6 G5 A workstation desktop PC. Stay tuned for more Linux benchmarks -- including multi-distribution benchmarks -- on the HP Z6 G5 A in upcoming articles, thanks to HP for letting us use this workstation for a few weeks of review and Linux benchmarking.

👁 Windows 11 WSL2 benchmarking

For those using Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) on their workstations, I also followed-up with a few benchmarks looking at the Ubuntu WSL2 performance on Windows 11 compared to bare metal Ubuntu 26.04 LTS.

Due to the I/O involved, there ocntinues to be a measurable impact to the code compilation speed when operating under Windows 11 WSL2 than going bare metal Linux.

Similarly for those doing database/LAMP stack type development work under WSL, there continues to be an observed overhead but still satisfactory for development/testing type purposes.

The performance obstacles of WSL2 are more pronounced in areas like Nginx HTTPS web traffic serving compared to bare metal Linux.

Anyhow, those are just a few extra benchmarks for those wondering about current WSL2 overhead on workstations with the latest Windows 11 Pro on modern hardware.
