A Maximum Monster (Japanese: γγγ·γγ γ’γ³γΉγΏγΌ Makishimamu MonsutΔ) is a type of Monster Card in Yu-Gi-Oh! Rush Duel. Like Effect Monsters, they are colored orange. They were first introduced in the Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS anime, and revealed in full for Yu-Gi-Oh! Rush Duel.[1][2]
Maximum Monsters are stored in the Main Deck. They can either be Normal or Special Summoned normally, or they can be Summoned via a special procedure called Maximum Summoning. If the player has three specific Maximum Monsters in their hand, they can Maximum Summon them together in Maximum Mode; as this is a form of Special Summoning, no Tributes are required even if one of the Maximum Monsters is Level 5 or higher. However, if the player already controls one or more monsters, then they must send them to the Graveyard as part of the Maximum Summon.
Under Maximum Mode, the three Maximum Monsters are treated as one single monster, with the center Maximum Monster's Level, Type, and Attribute applying, and the MAXIMUM ATK value that is printed on the center Maximum Monster instead of the normal ATK value applying. Maximum Monsters in Maximum Mode do not possess DEF, and cannot exist in Defense Position. Maximum Mode is also the requirement to apply or activate the effects of most Maximum Monsters: later Maximum Monsters include effects that can be partially applied while not in Maximum Mode. The Maximum Monsters in Maximum Mode can activate/apply all three of the effects of their component cards, but they can only attack once per turn, and are only treated as one Tribute for a Tribute Summon.
Triple Build Pack: Evolution Impact added a new concept for Maximum Monsters, [L] and [R] pieces that change their names in the hand into those of other Maximum Monsters, which give the composite Maximum Monster alternative options for effects.
The three specific Maximum Monsters all share the same name, with a "main" center card that possesses the MAXIMUM ATK value of the trio printed above its ATK/DEF, and two other monsters that have either [L] or [R] printed after their name, denoting the Left and the Right cards.
Maximum Monsters can have conditions beyond the Maximum Summon clause. "Maximum Gadget the Moving Fortress" was the first Maximum to have such conditions, with all of its components having Graveyard name change conditions (so the pieces' names become those of the empowering colored gadgets). "Dynamight Dino Dynamix [L]" and "Dynamail Dino Dynamix [R]" were the first Maximum Monster [L] and [R] pieces with conditions to replace another Maximum Monster's limb pieces for Maximum Summoning, in their case "Dynamic Dino Dynamix's" pieces. While still having the [L] and [R] designations, they currently have no named matched counterparts. Later "OuTerverSe Wish of Angeleva" and "OuTerverSe Wish of Devilgear" became the first side Maximums to have a Graveyard name change condition (to "OuTerverSe" like all other members of their series) alongside the piece substitution condition (substituting "Wish of OuTerverSe the World-Shattering Emperor's" pieces). They were also the first side Maximums to not include [L] and [R] labels at all in their card names.
Thus far, most center Maximum Monsters have been Level 10, with the exceptions of the Level 4 "Blaze Fiend Overlords Beelucitaroth" and "Mega Jointech Fortrex", Level 5 "Harpie Ladies" and the Level 7 "Super Princess of the Flock - Max Mutton", which all become Level 10 while in Maximum Mode. The first exception to this is the earlier mentioned Level 4 "Maximum Gadget the Moving Fortress", which has no Level increasing effect.
As they are made up of three monsters, Maximum Monsters often include three focal points in their design, one for each card. This can range from multiple heads, multiple monsters that combine into the larger Maximum Mode monster, multiple monsters connected to one another, highlighted armaments, or even elemental projectiles or effects spawned by the center piece.
In the Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS anime, Maximum Monsters were created by Nail Saionji, who noted a gap in the code of Rush Dueling that had been left there by the format's creator, Yuga Ohdo. Nail installed the rules for Maximum Summoning using Real-Time Rush Duel Programming during his Rush Duels with five of the Tops of Hexagon, and used Maximum Monsters against Yuga. All of them have been created by rewriting Duel ID cards, due to the cards' own ability to be overwritten with new card data. Due to their maintenance cost, their instability and the large amount of energy they emitted that could disrupt several systems in Goha City, Maximum Monsters were quite rare to see.
In the Yu-Gi-Oh! GO RUSH!! anime, Maximum Monsters return in the second season, used by members of The Secrecy thanks to the knowledge that Phaser Ryugu acquired thanks to The Relic. Defeating an opponent with a Maximum Monster in Maximum Mode causes The Relic to appear and seal the defeated Duelist into a card. Several Maximum Monsters were created thanks to people transformed into cards used as substitutes to replace Duel ID cards. Unlike Maximum Monsters in SEVENS, Maximum Monsters in GO RUSH do not seem to have instability issues and their maintenance cost was solved thanks to the combined efforts and resources between The Secrecy, Goha Ventures and Mutsuba Heavy Machinery.
This is the first series where Maximum Monsters were Summoned individually, but this is rare. In the third season, Maximum Monsters with effects that can change their names in the hand make their appearance, as seen with "OuTerverSe Wish of Angeleva" and "OuTerverSe Wish of Devilgear" who change into "Wish of OuTerverSe the World-Shattering Emperor's" [L] and [R] pieces for its Summon. In the anime, this mechanic is depicted as the substitutes having their artwork transform into the artwork of the original pieces.
