Remove Background Colors and Merge Texture Columns

[edit source]

I believe that the asset history pages (Template:Navbox asset history) should be altered to removed the background colors present on those pages, and to merge the redundant "before" and "after" columns under the main "Textures" column.

While the background colors can help a little in quickly determining what change happened to the model/texture at that point, I don't think it's very necessary considering that we have the "Further Info" section which can state the same information, making it redundant. Additionally, Mudscape stated that it wasn't very easy to comprehend on the Discord and Violine stated that they shouldn't be there on the Discord. As for the texture column, I think that the "Before" and "After" columns are unnecessary, and could just be merged into a single "Textures" column. This was initially suggested by Violine and I agree with that statement, in most cases one or both of these sub-columns are empty anyways so merging them together doesn't change much. And it could be better off as showing the current texture for that row (as seen on Stone/Asset history and Mud/Asset history) Electric Dragon (talk) 21:37, 17 May 2026 (UTC)

I almost never look at these pages, but I support the changes. The colors aren't really helpful; I find myself repeatedly referring back to the legend to see what they mean. Instead of colors, just put the type of change on the first line of each row of the '"Further info" column. Also maybe rename "Further info" to "Notes". The before and after textures are redundant; you end up with both vertical and horizontal comparisons; a single column is fine. Rampage455 (talk) 02:59, 18 May 2026 (UTC)
Hmm I feel like its a necessary evil. It's like what we do on Java Edition version history. Its useful to have the info at a glance than having to read the desc. Before/After both being there is definitely not needed though.  Nixinova  T ⁄ C  09:59, 18 May 2026 (UTC)
If the colour system must go, is there any other way we could explicitly communicate whether a visual change in a given version was the result of a texture change versus a model change? The wiki infuriatingly appears to continue to lump any visual change to a given feature under "texture changes" in history sections and I would very much like to see a stop put to this. - User-12316399 (talk) 18:48, 9 June 2026 (UTC)
Other than the further info section, none that I could think of. I tend to lean more toward the info sections rather then the colors anyways since it'll actually explain the change more specifically, so the change doesn't mean much to me. As for lumping visual changes under texture changes, I'm not exactly sure what you mean (an example would be nice) but in the case of asset history pages I don't see a reason to separate things based on type of change. I've spent a while looking but I can't find any examples on current revisions of block or entity pages, but five to ten years ago any visual change to a block or entity was likely to be listed in the history section as something along the lines of "Changed texture", even if the texture itself was never touched and the only change made was to the geometry. Some version pages still appear to be major offenders; for example the revision of Java Edition Beta 1.8#Blocks 2 at time of writing this lists water, lava and chests as having their "texture" changed, despite water and lava only having their default lighting modified (if even that), and chests on the other hand being reworked outright to an extent which renders "Changed texture" an offensive oversimplification. Lazy, uninterested, surface-level classification of visual changes like this was a major motivator for making asset history pages in the first place. - User-12316399 (talk) 21:43, 9 June 2026 (UTC)
Maybe footnote characters, like how the JE versions navbox works?  Nixinova  T ⁄ C  21:19, 9 June 2026 (UTC)

Support Before texture is useless, it's just same as after texture in above row. It's easier to look the text instead of trying to remember what do the colors mean. 👁 Image
