Invalid data value logs are item forms of the primary log block with damage values outside of the usual range which logs can usually be obtained in.

Obtaining

[edit | edit source]

Without the use of commands, invalid data value logs are unobtainable in the last versions in which they existed without inheriting them from a prior version in which they were obtainable.

Breaking

[edit | edit source]

Prior to 12w30d (the first version in which logs could be placed sideways), if a log block with an invalid data value exists inside of the world, it can be broken to obtain a log item of that data value.[verify] Such blocks can be obtained through block transmutation, with liquid transmutation being the most versatile.

In 12w30d and 12w30e, a tool enchanted with Silk Touch can be used to obtain an invalid data value log item if a sideways log is broken with it.

Usage

[edit | edit source]

Placement

[edit | edit source]

From 12w30d[verify] to 14w21b, invalid data value log items will place the log corresponding to their species. The directionality of the item is ignored; the item will be placed as if it were a normal log item. This also means that "wood" items will place a log rather than wood.

Attempting to place any log, regardless of data value, will immediately crash the game in 14w25a.[1]

From 14w25b to 17w46a, the pre-14w25a behavior can be seen again.

Conversion to future versions

[edit | edit source]

In 1.13 (17w47a) onwards, distinguishing between block and item variants using metadata and damage was formally abolished. As a result of this, existing items would be converted over to the new ID system automatically. Invalid data value logs behave anomalously in that instead of converting to their respective parent species, they all convert to oak logs instead. In addition, items with data values 12 to 15, which represent wood rather than logs, still become logs.[2]

History

[edit | edit source]

Java Edition

[edit | edit source]
Java Edition Indev
0.3120100131-2156Durability has been introduced. It can be assigned to log items via an inventory editor, but is functionally meaningless in this case.
Java Edition Beta
1.2Log items with a nonzero value set for damage now process this as a variant form of the item, rather than literal damage, resulting in the item forms now appearing distinct. The durability bar has also been removed from logs with higher damage values.
1.7Block transmutation is now possible, allowing for invalid data value logs to be obtained.
Java Edition
1.3.1?Logs now have different tooltips for each species. All invalid data value item forms of logs are named "Oak Wood", regardless of species.
12w30dThe block forms of invalid data value logs are now all occupied, with 4-11 representing sideways logs and 12-15 representing what would later become wood. Breaking any of these normally will now yield normal log items, however Silk Touch can still be used to access the items.
1.3Silk Touch can no longer be used to obtain invalid data value logs as items,[3] making them unobtainable in survival from this point onwards.
1.814w17aInvalid data value logs with damage value 4 are now named "Acacia Wood", and damage value 5 is now named "Dark Oak Wood", despite the real blocks these are named after using a completely separate ID.
14w25a👁 Image
With the introduction of data-driven item models, any item with a data value outside of what is accepted by the game has no model to point to, resulting in use of the missing item model.
14w30aInvalid data value logs, alongside other invalid data value items, now appear the size of a full block when held in third person or by another player or mob.
1.915w31a👁 Image
The missing model's inventory appearance has changed, resulting in the appearance of invalid data value logs also changing.
The items also appear the size of a full block when held in first person and when dropped on the ground, and also appear larger than before in an item frame.
1.1317w43a👁 Image
The missing texture has changed, resulting in the appearance of invalid data value logs also changing.
17w47aNumeric IDs for blocks and items have been completely removed from the game, with different species of logs being given their own string IDs. As a result, invalid data value logs have been "removed" as any such item now converts cleanly into oak logs.

Bedrock Edition

[edit | edit source]
This section is missing information about: If placed log blocks with metadata 7, 11, 12, 13, 14 or 15 were brought into existence, then broken, would they also drop their direct item equivalent, even if the blocks were not normally obtainable?

Please expand the section to include this information. Further details may exist on the talk page.
Pocket Edition Alpha
v0.8.0build 1With the introduction of rotatable logs, damage values 4–6 and 8–10 were legitimately obtainable by mining their respective block forms.[4]
build 3Mining invalid data value logs now yields normal log items.

Legacy Console Edition

[edit | edit source]
Legacy Console Edition
Xbox 360Xbox OnePS3PS4PS VitaWii USwitch
?Invalid data value log items can be obtained through block transmutation.
?Invalid data value logs in item form now appear "rotated" like in Java Edition between 12w30d and 14w08a. In Xbox 360 Edition, this is the appearance that is adopted in placed form; PlayStation 3 Edition instead has glitchy textures for the placed variants. See Log/Asset history#Legacy Console Edition and Wood/Asset history#Legacy Console Edition for more information.
?Rotated logs have now been properly implemented; invalid data value log items are no longer dropped when breaking blocks corresponding to those data values.

Issues

[edit | edit source]

Invalid data value logs are an issue, and due to their removal, can be considered already fixed.
