requirements

[edit source]
Latest comment: 9 March 202513 comments5 people in discussion

I think there should be some specific requirements, not just comprehensive, well-written, in compliance with the style guide, and up-to-date. For example size of at least 35 kb, or at least 5,000 symbols of visible text with spaces. Arina (she/her) 07:40, 9 March 2025 (UTC)

I don't think that is very different from saying that we need comprehensive, well-written, in compliance with the style guide, and up-to-date page, but there is no loss to put the requirements in as well. - 👁 Image
StizzurpXDD(talk) 08:33, 9 March 2025 (UTC)
It is very diffcult if not impossible to set up objective and specific requirements. For example 35 kB is not a high bar to meet.
IMO there are two types of articles we want to feature:
  • those that took a lot of effort
  • those that are especially interesting
GIM Dianliang233 (talk) 08:48, 9 March 2025 (UTC)
I think a lot of discussions on this are misguided. I want to reiterate that this is not Wikipedia, and our "featured article" won't be the best, perfect articles. The selection is mostly based on interestingness. GIM Dianliang233 (talk) 10:39, 9 March 2025 (UTC)
What do you mean by interestingness? Arina (she/her) 12:43, 9 March 2025 (UTC)
Interestingness. It's purely subjective. GIM Dianliang233 (talk) 12:49, 9 March 2025 (UTC)
Then why do we need this on the main page? Arina (she/her) 12:55, 9 March 2025 (UTC)
I believe that article length isn't a strong indicator of quality - this requirement seems more restrictive than helpful in distinguishing "good" from "bad" candidates. Generally, I don't think we need much specific requirements to define a good candidate; ultimately, discussions will determine that. In any case, if we notice trends among rejected candidates, we could always introduce new requirements later. - Zamburger (talk) 09:43, 9 March 2025 (UTC)
These numbers would be entirely arbitrary and are no good indicator for article quality at all. If met, would be no good indicator that an article is high quality - it's easily possible to have a low quality article with high byte count. Also if not met, they'd be no good indicator that an article is low quality, it's possible to have a very interesting but short article.
Featured articles could also just be articles that have recently been written to give them a wider audience. As an example, I have no doubt that Mojavatar would be a good featured article but it wouldn't fit your arbitrary criteria.
I believe that it's better to keep the criteria as lax as possible since I feel like it'd be a challenge anyway to get a new featured article for each week. | violine1101 (talk) 13:14, 9 March 2025 (UTC)
But why do we even need to get a new featured article every week? I don't see any purpose in this rush. We're not "employees" and this wiki is not a multi-million dollar company with a dedicated SEO department - this is a fully volunteer project. Arina (she/her) 13:24, 9 March 2025 (UTC)
I mean, we don't need it, but it's nice to give some interesting articles a highlight on the main page. I don't think we need to be a multi-million dollar company to make that happen. | violine1101 (talk) 13:34, 9 March 2025 (UTC)
it's nice to give some interesting articles a highlight on the main page - yes, but not every single week like we have some kind of a hard deadline. This just defeats the whole purpose of this wiki being a volunteer project. Arina (she/her) 13:36, 9 March 2025 (UTC)
I'm not sure why you think there'd be a hard deadline. If we don't have a featured article prepared for a week, the one from the previous week would probably just stay. | violine1101 (talk) 13:37, 9 March 2025 (UTC)

I oppose doing this for the reason I described in the comment - too harsh and really useless. Arina (she/her) 10:16, 9 March 2025 (UTC)

It means that the summary page will be fully protected, like MCW:Featured articles/Minecraft/2025/10. GIM Dianliang233 (talk) 10:17, 9 March 2025 (UTC)

Use the featured article templates for spin-off mainpages as well

[edit source]
Latest comment: 16 March 20251 comment1 person in discussion

I think updating the spin-off mainpages themselves to update the featured articles isn't ideal, as these pages are quite confusing for inexperienced editors due to an abundance of HTML tags. Using a dedicated page and template to fill in the section (like for the normal mainpage) is "neater", even if the featured spin-off articles are updated less frequently than the Minecraft article. – 👁 Image

A full single-page list

Latest comment: 18 March 20255 comments3 people in discussion

@MarkusRost, will it be ok to add it if I move User:Arina/sandbox/f to a subpage of this page? Arina (she/her) 19:36, 18 March 2025 (UTC)

If I understand this correctly, this page would basically include the same information as all the archive subpages (Minecraft Wiki:Featured articles/Minecraft/2025, etc.) but merged into one page. How would this work years on with hundred of old featured articles being listed? – 👁 Image

What do you mean by "work"? Even a thousand table rows is quite a few. Arina (she/her) 19:53, 18 March 2025 (UTC)
But what's the point in having a giant table if the information is already provided on separate subpages organized by namespace and year? This is only a less comprehensive way to present that information. – 👁 Image

Yes, having it as a subpage would be ok. Although I personally don't think it will be overly useful, specially long term. -- 👁 Image

Two week rotation for spin-offs

[edit source]
Latest comment: 27 March 20252 comments2 people in discussion

Considering the relative lesser quality of spin-off namespaces compared to mainspace, and the drastically lower page count, I feel it will be difficult to produce 52 interesting great quality pages every year for the spin-off namespaces. I also feel that 312 pages being featured every year (52 weeks, 6 namespaces) will make featured articles status feel pretty insignificant. To help with all these issues, I'd really like if the rotation period for all spin-off namespaces became two weeks, not just one week. I feel one week is fine for the mainspace because there are a gargantuan amount of pages and it has overall great quality. - Harristic / Talk 👁 Image

I've set up a two-week rotation now, starting from 2025 week 14. | violine1101 (talk) 19:46, 27 March 2025 (UTC)

What happened with the featured articles table?

[edit source]
Latest comment: 2 April 20259 comments4 people in discussion

Currently, the featured articles table is automated by Module:Featured articles, but now, every featured articles except for Minecraft are missing? Outrowed (talk) 09:31, 2 April 2025 (UTC)

Use Minecraft Wiki:Featured articles/list. Arina (she/her) 09:32, 2 April 2025 (UTC)
Thanks, but the current featured articles queue table included on the page should be fixed. I don't what causes it though, previewing the old revisions of Module:Featured articles still yield the same result. I also don't know a lot of advanced Lua scripting, but something is definitely wrong with it. Outrowed (talk) 09:43, 2 April 2025 (UTC)
This is a known issue, the featured articles table constantly breaks:

Doing an edit and save on Template:Mainpage featured article archive fixed it. Thats the template that actually sets the SMW properties and for some reason it doesn't set them sometimes? I don't know why.

I see, the Module:Featured articles queries for the pages that have featured articles-related SMW properties to be included in their queue table, but for some reason Template:Mainpage featured article archive doesn't set them. Well, it's probably up to the admins to fix it. Outrowed (talk) 10:53, 2 April 2025 (UTC)
I tried to fix it already, but apparently it didn't work. How annoying. I'll try to see if I can fix it but I have no idea why this is happening, it seems very strange. | violine1101 (talk) 12:41, 2 April 2025 (UTC)
I've made an edit to {{mainpage featured article archive}} to remove the <include> tags, not sure if that has fixed it. Refreshing the page via the "More" button fixed the table. Please let me know if this happens again. | violine1101 (talk) 12:44, 2 April 2025 (UTC)
Thank you very much! The table is indeed working right now, and I'll alert you if something happens again. Outrowed (talk) 15:18, 2 April 2025 (UTC)
I think this might be caused by Property:Featured article type and other missing properties values being removed at some point on the featured articles in other namespaces? The module seems to query featured articles based on that. Outrowed (talk) 09:46, 2 April 2025 (UTC)

Talk page nomination archival guideline

[edit source]
Latest comment: 13 April 20252 comments2 people in discussion

I propose any nomination to be archived after one week of inactivity. This is useful for keeping the page fresh, and makes sense since we nominate a page for weekly or bi-weekly timeframe depending on the namespace. Previous inactive nominations are likely unwanted, since they receive no attention at all, while we can give more spotlight for new nominations. Outrowed (talk) 13:48, 8 April 2025 (UTC)

I think one week of inactivity is too strict, given the activity levels on the nominations so far. In my opinion it's very good to have a good selection of nominations readily available, and just archive a nomination once there's consensus against (or rather, if it's clear that no consensus in favor can be established). | violine1101 (talk) 02:02, 13 April 2025 (UTC)

Splitting nomination pages

The nomination page is very huge (100 topics now). I propose splitting it based on the namespace. 👁 Image

Can you clarify on "splitting"? Do you support moving it to "Minecraft Wiki" namespace or the "Minecraft Wiki talk" namespace? Outrowed (talk) 13:47, 25 April 2025 (UTC)
I meant that we would have separate page for MC nominations, movie nominations, dungeons nominations etc. 👁 Image

error in current article summary

[edit source]
Latest comment: 19 August 20251 comment1 person in discussion

Sorry if this isnt the right place to put this, but the mainspace's featured article subpage's talk page seems to be only used for article nominations. The current summary for the Nether reactor has a minor error. In the last sentence, there is an instance of the word Nether which isnt capitalized, which is against the style guide. Bringing it up since it is a protected page, otherwise I'd just fix it. 👁 Image
