New skin

Latest comment: 24 September 20231 comment1 person in discussion

I'd like to give a massive shoutout to User:Oakar567, who is the mastermind behind not only the Minecraft Wiki logo, but also all the skins you'll see on the wiki! If you explore around a bit, you'll see that each game has its own design! Also, there's dark mode which needs separate assets as well. This was so much work (especially with all our suggestions for minor tweaks and constant color changes), thank you so much for your contribution here! | violine1101 (talk) 18:14, 24 September 2023 (UTC)

Unreliable Migration tool, minor theme issues and a question

Latest comment: 24 September 20232 comments2 people in discussion

The migration tool seems to be somewhat unreliable to use here, which is why I created an account here manually (Rip edit history I guess).
I've noticed the following problems:

  • Usernames with an underscore in them break the link. In my case is the name Andre_601 but the resulting link only has Andre.
  • The token doesn't seem to get recognized. I should add it to the text/edit summary, but no matter what I try it doesn't work here and isn't found... Maybe it's related to the above problem where it uses the wrong username?

I also noticed smaller theme isssues that should be looked into. The "Special Characters" tab for example in the editor dipslays the characters with black colour, which on the dark skin of this wiki makes them unreadable.
Another small inconvenience is highlighting/selecting text. It too makes the text unreadable as the highlight is a white-ish colour while the text also remains white. This colour is also applied when adding the signature using four tildas, tho the text colour there is a more readable blue (Still not optimal tho). Brackets seem to also be affected by this.

Not sure how hard it would be to change these things... At best is it probably some CSS to change and at worst would it take a lot more work I suppose.

Finally would I like to ask a simple, yet important question: Are there any possible (legal) problems with Mojang? Given the domain is "Minecraft.wiki", one may assume it's an "official" Wiki which I assume is not the case, as it has been for the past. So I was wondering if you had a chat with Mojang on this matter, as I fear this could later on cause a lot of trouble as people will assume the wiki is official and/or supported by Mojang when it is not, resulting in Mojang taking actions against you in the worst case... So I would like to know if there is any info on this.
Thanks.--Andre601 (talk) 19:17, 24 September 2023 (UTC)

Hi! If you have any problems with the user migration, you can reach out to Weird Gloop here: Special:Contact - I'm not sure if they can help in your specific case, but they can at least try. At the very least we're looking into making the merging of users possible at some point, so your edit history will not be disconnected forever!
The token needs to be added to the user wiki page, i.e. for me it was at User:Violine1101 on Fandom - if you edit your user profile, it won't work. It doesn't matter what's in the summary. It's possible that there's something weird going on with whitespaces, so again, I'd recommend to contact Weird Gloop about that.
Note: If you join our Discord, you might get faster support, we have people from Weird Gloop there who can directly assist you.
The dark mode is still a bit of a work in progress, we're looking into these particular issues still and fixing them one by one. It's a pretty arduous process but we're glad we already got as far that we could launch with a dark mode at all! Your feedback has been noted, we'll fix it as soon as we get to it!
We don't think we'll have legal problems, since we're transparent about not being affiliated with Mojang or Microsoft. So that shouldn't be an issue. After all, minecraft.fr is also in a similar position and hasn't been legally challenged as far as I'm aware. Maybe we can make it a bit more clear still though, and explicitly add it into the footer on every page instead of just the legal disclaimer. | violine1101 (talk) 21:08, 24 September 2023 (UTC)

Indie Wiki Buddy

Latest comment: 25 September 20232 comments2 people in discussion

It might be helpful to ask people to people to install Indie Wiki Buddy for their browser to ensure they don't accidentally click links to the old site. –MJLTalk 20:07, 24 September 2023 (UTC)

It's linked under the "We need your help!" section. –Sonicwave talk 00:43, 25 September 2023 (UTC)

App

Latest comment: 26 September 20232 comments2 people in discussion

Now that you are moving away from Fandom, will you be making an app. I think this would help it optimization for mobile users. Dont want the website looking odd on mobile. 2600:387:F:5C37:0:0:0:1 20:18, 26 September 2023 (UTC)

I don't think there are any plans for an app; the mobile skin is still being worked on though. –Sonicwave talk 21:49, 26 September 2023 (UTC)

Ads

Latest comment: 28 September 20232 comments2 people in discussion

I saw it was mentioned that ads were going to be run as only one per page, and wanting those ads to not be awful and intrusive. I was wondering if ethicalads.io had been discussed as an option at all? I think your goals around advertising align closely with theirs. They're the antithesis to how sites like fandom run advertising, and I think the userbase would welcome that a lot. –Princessnorah (talk) 05:12, 28 September 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for the pointer - I don't really know which ad providers Weird Gloop is or is planning to use, and the exact ad units that will be on the wiki are still not 100% set in stone. However, you can expect a similar volume, type, and placement of ads as on the Runescape wikis. Note that UK and EU users currently do not get served ads on Weird Gloop wikis at all, and the same applies to logged-in users. Rest assured that we're still exploring other potential non-intrusive ad options as well, though. | violine1101 (talk) 07:22, 28 September 2023 (UTC)

School Blockers

Latest comment: 5 October 20232 comments2 people in discussion

There should probably by a section about shcool blockers and how fandom is blocked TehOctoPlaysMC (talk) 19:12, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

This is not something that we have control over though – there's nothing stopping any school from also blocking this wiki. | violine1101 (talk) 05:49, 5 October 2023 (UTC)

The website is fast and snappy

Latest comment: 5 October 20231 comment1 person in discussion

Thank you for maintaining the new website. It feels very fast and snappy without the Fandom bloat. 👍 —andrybak (talk) 19:33, 5 October 2023 (UTC)

Readd Achievements

Latest comment: 12 November 20232 comments2 people in discussion

So I noticed gamepedia Achievements are gone. I’m hoping we can readd them and maybe do it like what Gamepedia used to do. Also while possibly anniversary and special occasion ones. Litorom (talk) 03:57, 12 November 2023 (UTC)

Yes, this is unfortunately something we had to drop, since while the extension is open-source, it's no longer being maintained and that maintenance overhead wouldn't be worth it. On Fandom, these achievements and wiki points were pretty broken and unsupported anyway, so it's not a massive loss. I don't think it makes sense to implement something similar as a wiki feature itself, but we could do something similar as a wiki project, for example similar to WP:Awards, though I'm not exactly sure what that would look like (and I'm personally not particularly interested in implementing something like this myself). | violine1101 (talk) 23:13, 12 November 2023 (UTC)

Fandom hypocrisy (irrelevant)

Latest comment: 4 August 20241 comment1 person in discussion

Thought this would be funny. The description for fandom.com reads "The entertainment site where fans come first." which couldnt be further from the truth. Ch5rus (talk) 21:31, 4 August 2024 (UTC)

Add a fact that some wikis on Fandom (not the Minecraft Wiki) are planning to move in the future, while some have decided to stay for now, or are still discussing whether to move/fork or not. TestAccount6777 (talk) 13:04, 13 November 2024 (UTC)

Couldn't we just redirect or add a message to the old Fandom Wiki?

Latest comment: 9 March 20252 comments2 people in discussion

Why can't the old Fandom pages just be updated to automatically redirect to their corresponding page here, or have a message that reads something like: "This page has been moved. Please see the new page here.", with a link to their page on this wiki?

Establishedmorning (talk) 14:41, 9 March 2025 (UTC)

It's Fandom policy that they don't remove wikis even when they are abandoned and outdated. They also consider mentioning this wiki to be some kind of vandalism. We can't control anything about what Fandom does, we just keep improving this wiki so it's the best it can be. If you want to make sure you never accidentally go to the outdated fandom wiki then you can use https://getindie.wiki Mudscape 👁 Image

Who even still edits the fandom wiki anyway?

Latest comment: 31 October 202511 comments4 people in discussion

It’s not like anons are just innocently editing it by mistake, because they can’t. Are there actually like admins left over there? Couldn’t they just lock everything so the wiki becomes useless? Axolotlmapus (talk) 20:39, 31 October 2025 (UTC)

There are still two administrators on the Fandom wiki, see: https://minecraft.fandom.com/wiki/Minecraft_Wiki:Admin_noticeboard. They can't lock the wiki because Fandom doesn't allow them to. -- 👁 Image

The wiki isn't useless. There are still active editors there, we don't need to dance over the grave of their activity just because it's Fandom. BigEarsQuake 2 (talk) 20:41, 31 October 2025 (UTC)
I feel no ill will towards them, but I don’t get why they’re sticking around. They’re just needlessly splitting community effort by keeping a wiki hosted by a toxic company on life support. Axolotlmapus (talk) 20:46, 31 October 2025 (UTC)
The wiki is still being edited, because many people still use the Fandom wiki; whether it's through Google search results, or by other means. There is still an incentive to maintain the Fandom wiki for the people who still use it. -- 👁 Image

Reading https://minecraft.fandom.com/wiki/Minecraft_Wiki_talk:Community_portal, I can’t help but notice two things: they don’t really have a reason for sticking around (besides some rather Stockholm Syndrome-esque beliefs that Fandom is actually improving) and they’re still actively trying to compete against this wiki. It’s their choice I guess, but it’s unfortunate that they’re choosing to stay for no reason other than the option exists and fandom is holding the old wiki hostage. Axolotlmapus (talk) 21:35, 31 October 2025 (UTC)
Yeah, there are still quite a few edits made on the Fandom wiki every day; see this screenshot. The Fandom wiki is not totally dead, at least not yet. -- 👁 Image

I feel bad for the one person (supposedly) still editing Minecraft Archive Wiki Axolotlmapus (talk) 21:14, 31 October 2025 (UTC)
That one person was an administrator, who deleted a user page of a user per their request. There are no other edits to the old Fandom Minecraft Wiki. -- 👁 Image

Interesting. Finding out there’s actually a third Minecraft wiki that’s genuinely dead was an intriguing rabbit hole. Axolotlmapus (talk) 21:22, 31 October 2025 (UTC)
Also Fandom's forking policy says that the Fandom wiki should remain up and running for whatever reason. So no locking the whole thing, I guess. 👁 Image
