A fishing rod, also called a fishing pole, is a long, thin tool used to catch fish, pull in mobs, or activate buttons and pressure plates. The tool is often paired with the bow as an alternative crafting option.
During The Order of the Stone, after being trapped by the arrow-dispensing defenses in the temple of the Order of the Stone, Jesse could choose to craft a fishing rod.
During A Portal to Mystery, on Cassie Rose's lair, Jesse crafts a fishing rod, to which they use to catch a fish in the nearby lake and bait one of the calico cats.
