The painting canvas is an item that Wanda had requested from Jesse in exchange for an information about Fred.
During Jesse's search for trivia about Fred, they approached Wanda while she was painting with her feet. Jesse assumed that Fred liked painting with his feet, but Wanda corrected them, explaining that she had injured her hands and could no longer craft. Wanda proposed a trade where Jesse would craft her a painting canvas in exchange for information about Fred's favorite color. She gave Jesse wool, but not enough sticks. Jesse could gather sticks around the town either before or after speaking with Wanda. After the canvas was crafted, Wanda told Jesse that Fred's favorite color was "lapis blue".
