Sugar cane is a type of tall grass cultivated for sugar. It is also used to make paper.
In Assembly Required, if Jesse chooses to go for the Ellegaard route, they can see sugar cane in Redstonia, on Farmer Gloria's auto-farming machine.
In Hero in Residence, sugar cane is shown growing in Beacontown. If Jesse approaches the plants, they express gladness about the abundance of plants in the town. Jesse can pick one and later craft it into sugar.
In Above and Beyond, the Fireworks Union keeps some sugar cane backstage. Jesse can take some and craft sugar or paper to use in making firework rockets.
Sugar cane is grown on wet farmland or grass blocks that are directly adjacent to water. The plant grows vertically, one block at a time.
