Sponge should be mentioned in this page, because it is an animal in real life. 85.76.71.234 17:40, 4 August 2018 (UTC)

- Actually, sponges in minecraft are not animals. They were removed again here. โ Jack McKalling [ ๐ Talk

Looking through the history of this page, there seems to be a lot of edits adding mobs that aren't clearly animals (such as blazes and creepers). In my opinion, it would be better to redirect this to Mob#List of mobs, which lists all mobs anyway. However, this page does have a section on animal-inspired blocks that may make it worth keeping, though I'm not sure how useful that section is. โSonicwave talk 00:39, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

Support changing to a redirect for the reasons listed above. As far as the Blocks section, I don't see the use of it. Nobody who is searching for "Animal" is going to be looking for a list of animal-inspired blocks and having a list of these blocks here simply for the sake of having them listed somewhere is not useful imo.--Madminecrafter12 (Talk to me | View what I've done) 00:51, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

Support. The blocks "animals" aren't animals in the minecraft sense at all and categorizing them as such as more confusing than anything. Either way, it doesn't give this page merit to exist alongside Mobs. -PancakeIdentity (talk) 01:08, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
I think that it is beneficial to have sub pages. Every update adds new mobs to Minecraft. We canโt keep having a single mob page as pretty soon, there is going to be trouble loading the page due to the amount of information of it. Drour1234 (talk), 9 August 2021 (UTC)
- If there's trouble loading the page, just split that page, instead of re-classifying these mobs without basis.--Chixvv (talk) 04:05, 10 August 2021 (UTC)
- What do you mean by split the page? Drour1234 (talk), 9 August 2021 (UTC)
- For example, split the mob page into Mob/List of mobs, Mob/Achievements, Mob/Advancements, etc.
- If you list all the so-called animals here, the Mob page is still long.--Chixvv (talk) 04:21, 10 August 2021 (UTC)
- I cannot split the page because the vanilla page wonโt load on mobile. Also, why did you redirect the animal page when pages such as โundead mobsโ and โaquatic mobsโ exist? Personally, I think that an animal section on the mob page should exist over an arthropod section since arthropods are animals. Drour1234 (talk), 9 August 2021 (UTC)
- Obviously, it's because undead mob and aquatic mobs are offical categories.--Chixvv (talk) 08:32, 13 August 2021 (UTC)
- I think the Arthropod section should become the animal section since arthropod is too narrow of a category. Drour1234 (talk), 13 August 2021 (UTC)
- I just noticed this discussion and that the page has been changed back to a disambiguation page. The problem with this page is that there is no established definition of "animal" and which mobs to include seems to be a matter of constant debate based on the edit history. As of now, it lumps fictional mobs such as endermites and striders as well as "animal blocks" with everything else. I personally doubt people who are looking for "animals" have endermites or sponges in mind. Given this, I think it's much simpler and clearer to just redirect it to the list of mobs. โSonicwave talk 04:45, 14 August 2022 (UTC)

Support either changing it back to a redirect, or only including mobs that are considered "animals" in the code (mobs that extend the Animal class and are controlled by the spawn-animals setting in server.properties, see this list sent by enbyd on Discord).--Capopanzo (talk | contribs) 21:08, 12 October 2023 (UTC)

Support I like the idea of only including mobs from that list (but probably not things like "AbstractHorse", what even is that?). There are 29 mobs listed there if I counted correctly, seems like a good list. Maybe we could do an additional info like "some other mobs, even though biologically belong to animal kingdom, are not treated as such in the game; for all of those, see mob page". Is this a disambiguation page, or just a rudimentary overview page?
[edit source]
WP:Disambiguation states 3 primary reasons for disambiguation. Those with multiple overlapping names with no primary topic, those with multiple overlapping names with a primary topic with secondary uses, and those with only 2 uses (no disambiguation).
Animal is a broad concept article with relatively a lot of content for a disambiguation page. Animal is used as a category in the game code, so this page is very close to just acting more as a broad concept article versus a disambiguation page.
In the case of Minecraft, disambiguation pages are primarily intended when multiple in-game objects have related, identical, or overlapping names; current names or historical names. Animal is not the current name or historical name of any feature of Minecraft. Plus, Special:DisambiguationPageLinks and the disambiguation template states a primary suggestion to change links to more specific link targets.
If a page links to animal, the page may be linking to the general concept of animals, but there are not always clear instances of a more specific link target since there is no in-game feature currently named "animal", or historically named "animal" or an identical name. A handful of articles link to this page.
I would recommend removing the "disambiguation" template from Animal. A few other disambiguation pages (such as Plant) may also qualify for the same treatment, but animal seems to be the most clear cut for the change. Delvin4519 (talk) 02:42, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
- This article doesn't currently seem to have the "disambiguation" template? And rightly so the article has a fairly large intro and also includes advancements and renders. โ Misode (talk) 02:46, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
- Ah, I must have had a hallucination then. Delvin4519 (talk) 02:47, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
I think what this page could reasonably bear is a comparison of all animal traits, especially those traits that only animals possess, such as what these animals eat, when they attack the player (if they are not passive), to what degree they are tameable, and many more that I forgot. It would make an interesting table. 62.195.163.164 20:35, 26 February 2024 (UTC)

- The cow and the mooshroom have the correct texture, and the sniffer and the happy ghast are already mentioned. BDJP (t|c) 16:19, 3 July 2025 (UTC)
When many people said that the cow and mooshroom renders were outdated, they were likely referring to the image at the top of the page. The bat model and texture is outdated as well. CrockCraftMC (talk) 22:21, 18 October 2025 (UTC)
