Just a "decorative" block?

[edit source]
Latest comment: 13 December 20151 comment1 person in discussion

Hello, my name's Andrea. I was thinking: is glass just a "decorative" block? I don't think so, because it's both decorative & necessary sometimes, don't you think? Through glass you may see stuff beyond a certain threshold which others can't surpass to come to you. Regards.

Do zombie reinforcements spawn on glass?

[edit source]
Latest comment: 1 August 20212 comments2 people in discussion

The article currently states: "As a solid block, zombie reinforcements can spawn on top of glass, resulting in unexpected zombies "sneaking into" an otherwise secure area of a structure. It also correctly states that mobs cannot spawn on glass. Is it true that zombie reinforcements are an exception, and can spawn on glass? --Runamucker (talk) 11:40, 24 June 2020 (UTC)

Bob Bridges, robhbridges (gmail): I think we need a new section here -- we could maybe call it "Interactions". I've noticed that creepers cannot see me through glass; spiders and phantoms can. I don't think archers can, or skeletons, or whatever they're called. Others will be able to fill in behavior of other mobs.

And once, long ago, I saw an enderman who walked onto a glass surface and immediately started to sink into it. He didn't turn red as if he were taking damage, but he immediately teleported away. I usually build my first shelter into the side of a hill because it's fastest as the first nightfall approaches, but after that they're all of glass: walls and roof both, so I can see whether there are any creepers around before I walk out during the day. This particular shelter was near a hill, and I think the enderman walked from the ground onto my roof. Maybe he teleported there, but that's not how I remember it. As I said, he immediately started to sink into it, and teleported away. That was some years ago and maybe endermen can walk on glass now, but they couldn't back then, at least.

Glass is weak. Building out of stone helps protect from creepers; glass does not. So I make small glass windows to let me look out, and a lookout platform on top of my home base to pick off creepers with a bow before I venture out.
I have no idea about zombie reinforcements, because I play Bedrock. Amatulic (talk) 04:35, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

"Stained Glass" redirects here, but is not discussed

Latest comment: 7 December 20214 comments2 people in discussion

If one clicks the stained glass link in the first paragraph, it brings one right back to this page. However, nowhere on the page does it say how to make stained glass. Can we get this fixed, please? SirDaddicus (talk) 00:27, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

I might be talking about some other named glass. It's the stuff made with amethyst I'm referring to. SirDaddicus (talk) 00:29, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
Never mind. I looked up amethyst, and found it's tinted glass, not stained. Sorry. SirDaddicus (talk) 00:30, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
Um... did you look at the crafting recipes? Stained glass variants are right there. It isn't the same as tinted glass, it's stained glass. However, actually making stained glass is in the glass pane article, so I have changed the stained glass redirect to point there. You just combine glass panes with dye, and you get stained glass panes. Amatulic (talk) 06:15, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

I think this should have a merge with stained glass and tinted glass.

Split Glass/Stained Glass

Glass and Stained Glass have 0 overlapping crafting recipes, trades are not shared, generation is not shared, half of the current usage page only applies to stained glass. I propose splitting the current page into Glass, detailing the undyed block, and Stained Glass detailing all of the colors of stained glass on their own page. - Mudscape (talk) 04:13, 30 September 2023 (UTC)

Support, while it feels a little strange splitting the default variant from the coloured variant, for glass it does make sense due to the crafting recipe differences in my opinion. I don't believe any other default/coloured blocks have all these crafting recipes tied to only the default. - Harristic | Talk 👁 DungeonsEntitySprite penguin-onesie.png: Sprite image for penguin-onesie in Minecraft

Support for both glass and terracotta as well due to the different usage (regular terracotta can be used to duplicate some armor trims, stained terracotta can be smelted into glazed terracotta).--Capopanzo (talk | contribs) 14:01, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

Support, this support is also valid for glass panes. Split for both. (Glass -> Glass/Stained Glass; Glass Pane -> Glass Pane/Stained Glass Pane). I'd also support the split for terracotta/dyed terracotta. Delvin4519 (talk) 19:02, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

Support, seems obvious, also for panes and terracotta. Plus we also have Tinted Glass now which is already split. | violine1101 (talk) 22:03, 6 October 2023 (UTC)

Support yes please. It is very confusing to have these dyed and undyed block concepts merged into the same page. The readability is very bad for readers who need to learn how both concepts work, since both are unique and not made exclusively distinct in the text. - Jack McKalling (talk) 13:27, 24 October 2023 (UTC)

Support I would be in favor of this change, I think this makes sense for the page to be split. I'd also support Delvin's idea of splitting terracotta/dyed terracotta, as well as glass pane/stained glass pane. ThatOneWolf (talk|contribs) 13:44, October 24 2023 (UTC)

Not against splitting stained glass out, but solely on the basis of plain glass having so many usages that stained glass can't be used in, as well as the methods of obtaining. Therefore, I'm sceptical on splitting out glass panes, as plain glass panes only differ from stained ones in their usage by the map locking feature and their sole non-Education crafting usage, which produces... stained glass panes (as an alternative to using stained glass blocks for that purpose). Terracotta is somewhere in between these sentiments, with the sole crafting usage of raw terracotta (that isn't crafting colored variants) being cloning a few armor trim templates. — BabylonAS 14:02, 24 October 2023 (UTC)

Neutral Well I thought I put this here like 20 mins ago but apparently not. I don't have a problem with this, but it needs to be more standard across the wiki. Like terracotta, glass is a color variant of a main block and is still glass. You need the base block to craft it. Considering the usage of stained glass is so limited already it really not even worth having a separate page. Same with terracotta, just a colot varriant of one block with no reason to split it. Ideally we have some sort of standard policy on the wiki for what pages warrant a split from their (color or other) variants but is easier to just leave this one alone unless we do it for all pages similar to this. -Consumed (TalkContributions) 14:53, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
I doubt setting standards for merging and splitting is worth it, as each case tends to be different to the other. Precedents may be referred to, but in the end, I believe it has to be determined on case-by-case basis. — BabylonAS 14:16, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
Yes it's very case by case. If not a written policy some rough guidelines might be good. -Consumed (TalkContributions) 14:53, 24 October 2023 (UTC)

Multithreading

Latest comment: 23 June 20241 comment1 person in discussion

I recall that, in some versions of the game, glass had a quirk described as creating a separate thread. I do not posess the technical knowledge to write about this behavior but I know it was somehow exploited to mix together binary data of blocks and falling blocks by SciCraft players. There isn’t a logarithmic scale showing what Y levels glass generates at, which would greatly improve this article

--FeedbackBot 14:43, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
That would be actively useless because glass does not generate naturally. - Harristic / Talk 👁 Image

I think a trivia page should be added to this article, which could include trivia such as when using the /item replace command it will make the glass cover your head like a space helmet.
