This is called a "head-up" display, not heads-up. Is there a way to change the title of the article without moving it to a new article? –Preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.162.82.208(Talk)00:11, 16 October 2012 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~
No, that is the correct name. And when you move a page, it automatically creates a redirect to its previous name. You do not copy over the page's contents. -- Hower6401:23, 16 October 2012 (UTC)
A little more digging at wikipedia finds that 'head-up display' is the original term, and is still preferred by the aviation industry. 'Heads-up display' seems to be the result of careless conflation with the expression 'heads up', though some people make a technical distinction between the two. -- Orthotope05:58, 16 October 2012 (UTC)
That looks about right. Though in the gaming and computing industries, "heads-up display" seems to refer to something else, although its name is derived from the "head-up-displays" used in aircraft. -- Hower6406:39, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Hello, I noticed that this page was a stub and am interested in adding to it. There is a large gap in the history section, but otherwise, what else needs to be added? I can do my best and add images and gather more details, but if anyone could give a a leading idea as to what is important to improving this page, that would be great.

I just looked at this page and realized it said that the HUD cannot be hidden in the Pocket Edition even though in the latest update, they added that ability. Could someone please fix this? 98.117.203.3615:20, 18 June 2013 (UTC)

Hey.
I just wanted to inform you that I fixed one mislead information that was about the experience bar. It was added in 1.8 with NO use, but 1.9-pre1 (which was released as 1.0.0) added the LEVEL number to the bar. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by 83.218.115.199 (talk) at 12:11, August 11, 2015 (UTC). Thanks! Good catch. I personally appreciate accurate history.

Anyone interested in an image of the HUD in 1.9 and up? I have one, and, if you want, you can get it without the Dutch names (only the numbers) on it or just a blank canvas for the creatives... Just let me know ;). --DarkShadowTNTNL Admin (t ♦ c) 19:12, 8 April 2016 (UTC)
I have it almost finished, but do you want the Sharpness particle numbered too? --DarkShadowTNTNL Admin (t ♦ c) 20:15, 8 April 2016 (UTC)
Yes. I hate to ask since you've already done a lot on this image, but is it possible to get a shot where the sword is more visible? – Sealbudsmantalk/contr20:20, 8 April 2016 (UTC)
I'll upload two files, if you're fine with that (time-o-plenty for that). One with an 'active' HUD (the file on the Dutch Wiki), and an 'inactive' HUD (something like the HUD example of 1.8.9 and below which is currently on the article page) --DarkShadowTNTNL Admin (t ♦ c) 20:27, 8 April 2016 (UTC)
The only thing what is left are the labels. Can I do them, if you're fine with it, or do you want to do them? --DarkShadowTNTNL Admin (t ♦ c) 08:11, 9 April 2016 (UTC)

I added the extra info for MCPE HUDs, so you can remove the banner on the top of the page. – Unsigned comment added by 65.60.180.146 (talk) at 18:18, 1 September 2020 (UTC). Please sign comments with ~~~~
Does any of you know the exact version when It was removed? I would like to know. – Unsigned comment added by 73.30.183.131 (talk) at 19:48, 26 November 2020 (UTC). Please sign comments with ~~~~

I would like to propose a new format for the Display section:
Display
👁 Image All existing bars in the HUD. Clockwise starting from the bottom left: the experience bar, the health bar, the armor bar, the oxygen bar, and the hunger bar.
The armor bar appears above the health bar while the player is wearing armor and is hidden when the player is not.
The oxygen bar appears above the food bar when the player's oxygen is below 100% (usually when the player's head is underwater) and is hidden when the player has full oxygen.
In Creative mode, the experience, health, armor, hunger, and oxygen bars are hidden.
The crosshair clarifies which block block or entity the player is currently looking at.
The paper doll is a render of the player's model, from a 2nd person point of view, excluding help items but including worn equipment.
The chat appears in the bottom-left in Java Edition and the top-left in in Bedrock Edition. It shows all of the most recent messages from players and commands. The chat can be expanded (to full-screen mode) by pressing , pressing the right-arrow on the D-pad of a controller[Bedrock Edition only], or by tapping the chat button on a touchscreen[Bedrock Edition only]. These controls can also be changed in the options menu.
The textures for the HUD are defined in the game's icons.png file.
I think the bullet points are easier to read, and the info about the crosshair in mobile is more appropriate in its own section (i.e. a section describing the mobile UI options specifically). --Simanelix(T|C)01:16, 25 April 2024 (UTC)

The HUD is everything overlaid on the screen, right? In that case, there are several things that go unmentioned. Many of them are temporary or need to be manually activated, but I still consider most of them part of the HUD.
Some of these maybe don't quite count (especially the various menus), but I think most of them do. I may have also missed some.
Additionally, there's some other information that's missing, or things that could be expanded upon:
- The Attack indicator can also appear beside the hotbar. Currently, it's only listed within the Crosshair section... It could probably use its own section. It's also not listed in the Options section.
- The Debug screen is only briefly listed in the Options section.
- Screen Effects and Overlays are only briefly mentioned in the Options section. Even then, it only mentions the "pumpkin view" and spyglass overlay.
I've added most of what I've mentioned. I did not add most menus (pause, advancements, social interactions, game mode switcher). I also added the autosave indicator, screen titles, button prompts, and Bedrock's coordinates and days played, and gave the chat, the debug menu, and screen effects their own sections.
Most sections were given the "main article:" template. Instead of using the "exclusive" template for a bunch of things, I instead made two new sections: Elements exclusive to Bedrock Edition, and Elements exclusive to Java Edition.
I see that based on past edit summaries, it looks like you were arranging things in a particular order. Unfortunately, I don't really know where you were putting what, so I mostly just added things in alphabetically. I hope that how I've done things is at least okay for the most part. They should be easy to move around if needed. AugustShade (talk) 20:03, 25 April 2025 (UTC)
I would argue the emote GUI and status effects menu are not HUD elements, since they require the player to press a button on their keyboard, and persist once activated (needing to be closed afterward). They behave very similarly to the pause menu and inventory GUI, which we obviously know are not HUDs. Outrowed (talk) 12:13, 25 April 2025 (UTC)
You can set the [Int] Time and [Int] currentTick tag in the world's level.dat to negative number in Bedrock Edition. I tested this, and it seems to set the "Days played" to zero, nothing more. Same for Java Edition, the debug screen's day counter also sets it to zero. Unless I'm missing something, I'm pretty sure this gimmick does not exist. Outrowed (talk) 13:12, 30 May 2025 (UTC)
Ive had mine say "Too many to count!" I used a command block that was constantly using the add time command. The time counter does eventually hit one of the integer limits, and rolls around to the negatives. Bedrock has done that since before the day counter was added, it used to break the moon rendering 👁 Image amethyst_hhh(talk)(weekly survey)16:01, 30 May 2025 (UTC)
