I think that because the item itself isn't renewable, this should be marked as non-renewable. Even though you can bonemeal ferns, you can't get them to drop as large ferns.
This is different from something like path blocks because path blocks are never accessible in survival as an item, whereas large ferns can be found in villager houses, meaning it is possible to get in survival.

- So something like "Item form: No"? I think that could be a useful addition, though I'm not sure if there's precedent. ✿ShadowMistress✿ t+c 20:25, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
- Well, it was like that before, I changed it to the current form to remove the page from Category:Resources_with_invalid_renewability. --Melwin22 (talk) 20:30, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
- Given that its item form is legitimately obtainable as a non-renewable resource, do you mind if I change it back? ✿ShadowMistress✿ t+c 20:40, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
- Large Ferns are renewable by definition. There is not a finite number of Large Ferns in a Minecraft world. You can renew them by using bonemeal on a Small Ferm.
While you are correct that they can not be obtained in the game, that just makes them non-obtainable, not non-renewable. -BrianGLHF (talk) 20:45, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
- I will point out that the item form is also included in Non-renewable resource#Generated structures. ✿ShadowMistress✿ t+c 20:48, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
- Because they are obtainable in item form, from village chest loot. --Melwin22 (talk) 20:50, 9 March 2024 (UTC)

- Worth adding that yes-- I am specifically clarifying that to me, renewability is specifically for the item form, not the block itself. The main reason why I bring up path blocks as an example is because we can essentially consider the matrix of options, with a few pertinent examples:

|

- I think that Paths are relevant here because not having an item form is consistent with there not being one accessible in Survival, but this is not the case for Large Ferns. LtDk (talk) 01:19, 11 March 2024 (UTC)

- "cheats" includes exploits, such as item duping, commands, and Creative Mode.

- Note that there is the minor distinction of sand being considered renewable due to wandering traders being considered renewable (you don't have to travel the world to find them), whereas Large Ferns only show up in treasure loot. LtDk (talk) 02:12, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
- Good point. I may as well correct that.--Simanelix (T|C) 02:29, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
- I will also correct that. ;) LtDk (talk) 02:55, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hey, please don't modify my comment. Your edit to my table, striking through "End Stone", was pointless. --Simanelix (T|C) 03:31, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry, I should have just left a comment instead; End Stone actually regenerates when you respawn the dragon, and because that doesn't require exploration, it counts as renewable. I assumed that you were looking for a block that can easily be farmed "by hand" but cannot be renewably created, so, I chose Iron Ore as a reasonable alternative. Should have clarified! LtDk (talk) 04:25, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
- I'm assuming they don't drop as items with silk touch? SquebbyNICO (talk) 19:12, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
- you are assuming correct. Melwin22 (talk) 19:14, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
- Does silk touch drop 2 regular ferns or just nothing at all? SquebbyNICO (talk) 19:20, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
- If mined with your fist or any tool that isn't shears, large fern can only drop wheat seeds. Silk touch doesn't change anything. If mined with shears, it drops 2 regular ferns. Silk touch doesn't change anything either (and you can't enchant shears with silk touch in survival anyway). Melwin22 (talk) 19:38, 24 July 2024 (UTC)

- The page for Renewable resources has a section for items that are only renewable as a block, but not as an inventory item. I suppose that's something this page and others could elaborate on | mariberry-hearn! (talk) 15:07, 7 May 2026 (UTC)
