Opinions on the page so far

[edit source]
Latest comment: 13 April 20185 comments2 people in discussion

Princessnightmoon could i possibly get your opinion on this page, so far i think it looks ok but i just want to be sure before i continue. jjlr (talk) 08:42, 13 April 2018 (UTC)

Not sure why you want my opinion, but okay. Personally, I would reduce the number of cycling blocks, as it can be distracting. The crops are fine, but I'd split up the rest of the current blocks. Maybe add sub-sections for some of the more lengthy categories of similar blocks, such as (cobble)stone (brick) variants, or (red) sand(stone) variants. Also, I'd probably do this to make the crops growth cycle match better, instead of having wheat go through one cycle, while the other crops go through two:

@Princessnightmoon: you were the only person i could tell was online, and as far as splitting the blocks up into there own areas go i was avoiding that because i thought it might make the page to long, but i can try it and see. And i do agree the crops look better that way so i will be changing it, thank you. jjlr (talk) 09:09, 13 April 2018 (UTC)
Princessnightmoon Any better now? jjlr (talk) 09:45, 13 April 2018 (UTC)
Looks good so far. Lit and unlit redstone lamp makes sense for animation, and the same would go for other blocks that toggle between two versions. Some names could use slight adjustments, but don't worry about that for now, it's not that important. - Princess Nightmoon (πŸ‘ Talk

Jappa

Latest comment: 13 April 20184 comments2 people in discussion

Should the fact that Jappa is doing the textures be added to the infobox? or possibly the opening paragraph? jjlr (talk) 10:48, 13 April 2018 (UTC)

I think it's worth mentioning in the opening paragraph, yes. - Princess Nightmoon (πŸ‘ Talk

@Princessnightmoon: I was thinking something more like this:

WHAT IS JAPPA DOING TO MY MINECRAFT?

Changing the textures! Except for a few, like the Creeper.

Across all versions? YEP, both on Java and Bedrock. You cannot escape my sweet, sweet textures.

When? Soon! In the Beta Resource Pack, where all my beloved pixels live.

β€” Jasper "Jappa" Boerstra[1]

along with a mention in the first paragraph. jjlr (talk) 23:25, 13 April 2018 (UTC)

Horses, donkeys and mules are not changed in the latest version (Beta V2) of the pack; the texture files are identical to 1.12. Although, the new 1.13 models will eventually need renders for their own article. I'm going to compare some more textures to see whether they are actually changed or not. - Princess Nightmoon (πŸ‘ Talk

Downloaded textures

[edit source]
Latest comment: 11 June 20183 comments3 people in discussion

Ok, this is probably a dumb question, but does the downloadable texture pack have all of the textures in Minecraft or just the ones that will be changed? I'm asking this because I looked closely at the comparison of the sword texture and the bow texture, and they seem to be identical in both.-- Madminecrafter12πŸ‘ Image
Talk to meπŸ‘ Image
14:13, 15 April 2018 (UTC)

The pack does include every texture, including unchanged ones. However, there are also a few that look the same, but are actually ever so slightly different. For instance, the tools and weapons only have a few pixels changed, and the difference is extremely small, probably not even visible to the eye (I've used a program to compare textures). I think we do need to set some boundaries for what should be included and what shouldn't, but I'm not exactly sure where to place them. Pixel-perfect clones are obviously out (hence why I've thrown out horses/donkey/mule and bows already). - Princess Nightmoon (πŸ‘ Talk

I have to say, I don't really understand why some of those changes were done. Most of them look like improvements, some are very subtle changes, and some just seem to make no sense β€” like the anemic breastplate and the pointy paddle on the boat; nothing was wrong with them before, what needed fixing? 1. Add the Texture Update file to the infobox.
  2. In the history section, add the image to both the java, bedrock, and ps4 sections, with this format:
    • Java:
    • Bedrock:
    • PS4:

Change file names?

[edit source]
Latest comment: 29 April 20195 comments2 people in discussion

It would make much more sense in my opinion to have the new texture to be the basic name for the file. For example, "Iron ingot" should have the most recent texture, and the older version shoulder be "Iron Ingot Old" or something. Opinions? -PancakeIdentity (talk) 04:00, 29 April 2019 (UTC)

That is what will be done, but make sure to reupload the pre 1.14 file to "Item Revision N" and update any usages in history sections. – Nixinova πŸ‘ Image

So, should I move the pages to rename them and then update the uses where need be? Also, should I just put "Old" on the end of all the old file names? -PancakeIdentity (talk) 04:23, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
Upload the existing file as "Item Revision N", where N is a counter of how many times the item has changed (e.g., "Block of Gold JE4 BE2.png"). Then, go into the History section of the page and changed all uses of, for example Block of Gold to . Then reupload the texture update file over File:Block of Gold JE6 BE3.png. I've done the block of gold, and this is just an example; all other pages need to have this done. Thank you very much if you're willing to do this time-consuming task. :) – Nixinova πŸ‘ Image

Naming System

[edit source]
Latest comment: 29 September 20192 comments1 person in discussion

As we work to finally finish this up, I wanna define a new naming system. I propose putting the "[Item]_TextureUpdate_Revision_X" files into the normal naming scheme. So instead of Revision 1, Revision 2, TextureUpdate Revision 1, Revision 3, it would be Revision 1, Revision 2, Revision 3, Revision 4. -PancakeIdentity (talk) 18:25, 21 September 2019 (UTC)

Splitting Texture Update page

Gonna start this by giving a πŸ‘ Image
Strong Oppose. It just doesn't make sense. There were textures changed in most 1.14 snapshots, so we'd have tons of pages. The ones included in the final release are the final versions that represent the Texture Update. The intermediary revisions are documented in history sections. Splitting this page would be like having a separate page for every version of a new feature's behavior in the snapshots it was introduced in. -PancakeIdentity (talk) 22:06, 24 October 2019 (UTC)

Should we use APNG instead of GIF blocks texture image?

[edit source]
Latest comment: 30 July 20203 comments3 people in discussion

GIF images have a strong sense of sawtooth, and APNG (.png) can perfectly solve this problem, but APNG compatibility is not strong, and animation cannot be declared in thumbnails.

The :File:Portal.png file is used in the Nether Portal (block) page, This is an APNG file.

This kind of file is also very useful in the "History" section. Should this file replace most GIF files?--HlDorΙ™monWf(TAlK Β· C0NTR1BZ) 09:10, 1 March 2020 (UTC)

I πŸ‘ Image
Agree, for this reason, plus it'll make everything be a little more consistent (all .pngs). Another example would be File:Water (animated).png. -FezEmerald (Talk to me|See what I've been up to) 15:45, 15 April 2020 (UTC)
πŸ‘ Image
Disagree GIF images still use the full 24-bit RGB color space, it just can only use 256 colors out of that. That is fine for use in the Minecraft Wiki, since almost everything uses less than 256 colors, so they have no loss of quality as a GIF. APNG just creates compatibility issues with older browsers, as you said, so there's no reason to replace GIFS with it. --Unavailablehoax (talk) 05:45, 30 July 2020 (UTC)

We are doing this wrong.

[edit source]
Latest comment: 16 October 20204 comments4 people in discussion

The Texture Update refers to the replacement of the old (pre-1.14) textures by new ones, whose are only intended to replace them, and this means that future texture changes will not be related to this update. My proposal is that we have to do a new page called Texture Changes, where it would appear all texture changes ever made. Sorry for the bad english. RosilloGames (talk) 15:44, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

πŸ‘ Image
Neutral about this. I agree on β€œthis means that future texture changes will not be related to this update.” However, I disagree with splitting the page into its own for after 1.14. This might decrease searchability quite a bit. β€”98.230.115.82 12:37, 6 May 2020 (UTC)

Well the Texture Update specifically means 1.14, so any textures that were changed before or after this version should not count. to satisfy this criteria, a texture should have two properties: 1) Existed in JE 1.13.2 and before; 2) got changed at least once during the development of 1.14. Perhaps add a list of which textures didn't change at all in the trivia section? (Also reminder that iron nugget texture needs to be added both here and on its own page). -Komorebi17

That's a reasonable idea. What I've already noticed are creeper, dirt, enderman, bow and lava. These are the "classic" ones, while some others changed texture recently in 1.12 (colored wool, terracotta, etc.) or 1.13 (water) that mojang didn't bother changing them again. Maybe someone can start Trivia right away. Windwend (talk) 06:35, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

But if there are anything inappropriate about the list, please either talk to me or reply under the talk page, so that I know the issue in advance. Subsequent Texture Updates

Latest comment: 16 February 20211 comment1 person in discussion

Some textures that weren't updated in the versions listed in the article (Java Edition 1.14, Bedrock Edition 1.10.0/Bedrock Edition 1.11.0, and PlayStation 4 Edition 1.90) are listed in the article, like the Dragon Fireball, while others like the Clock and Compass aren't, and then there are cases like Crying Obsidian and the Smithing Table where a new block is given an "old texture" in the "programmer art" texture packs. Should these even be included in the article? Personally I think so if the change is from "programmer art", with further revisions to the textures not needing to be included.Pescavelho (talk) 11:54, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
