The Stanley Parable is a 2013 story-based game by Galactic Cafe. It is notable for featuring a very accurate and in-depth, albeit brief, parody of Minecraft as part of one of its gameplay routes.

About

[edit | edit source]

The game revolves around an office worker named Stanley (the player character) who explores his workplace after all his coworkers mysteriously disappear. Interaction is very limited, consisting mostly of walking down various routes and occasionally clicking on things. The game has various possible storylines and endings, many of which feature the Narrator becoming directly involved with what occurs in a self-aware manner.

The game received a standalone expansion/sequel in 2022, The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe, that is similarly metafictional, commenting on its status as a followup in the same way the original did with its status as a video game.

Games Ending

[edit | edit source]

The original game features Minecraft as part of a brief segment (the “Games” ending) where the Narrator takes him to various other popular games, including Minecraft. The Narrator transports Stanley to the border between a taiga and plains biome. There, he builds an extremely simple and generic house out of dirt and an oak door. He then brags about the house’s supposed magnificence, before deciding it must be rebuilt out of diamond. He then takes Stanley into a cave to acquire material for the rennovation, but almost immediately becomes annoyed with the game’s open-ended, non-linear nature and ends the segment, whisking Stanley over to Portal instead.[1][2]

Ultra Deluxe completely changes the segment so that it no longer features either of the two original games, replacing them with Firewatch and Rocket League respectively. The Narrator’s reason for disliking the first game (its status as an open world game) remains consistent across both the original and Ultra Deluxe.
