The taiga is a humid and cold biome comprising a grassland forested with small and large ferns, pale aquamarine-green grass, spruce and pine trees. Foxes and wolves commonly spawn here.

Generation

[edit | edit source]

Taigas generate in the moderately high humidity zones of cold temperature areas, as well as the highest humidity zones of frozen areas. They commonly border old growth taigas, forests, and snowy taigas, and less frequently birch forests. In cold temperature areas, they can generate in any type of terrain; flatlands near shattered windswept forests and swamps, rolling slopes and plateaus, or mountains with groves on the slopes.

In the frozen temperature areas, however, they only generate in medium to high erosion as vast groves replace them in mountainous terrain. They can sometimes still generate replacing rivers in the highest mountain peaks. When generated in frozen temperature areas, they create a large contrast with the snowy environment, most notably frozen rivers and snowy beaches.

Because these generate in the highest humidity, they are almost guaranteed to have lush caves underground. Cold temperature zone taigas have a slightly lower chance of bordering lush caves.

Description

[edit | edit source]

The taiga's surface is a grassland with a large number of ferns and large ferns, and is forested with pine and spruce trees, which are the only trees that can generate in this biome. The vegetation also includes sweet berry bushes, and takes an aquamarine color tone. The water coloration has a unique dark turquoise tone in Bedrock Edition.

Cold animal variants spawn in the taiga, as well as foxes and pale wolves. Rainfall is common and changes to snowfall above the layer Y=160Β±8 within taigas due to the humid and cold climate.

Pillager outposts, villages, and trail ruins generate in taigas occasionally. These villages are made of spruce wood materials and often contain gardens with poppy and pumpkin farms. Abandoned camps sometimes generate in taigas.[upcoming: Third Drop 2026]

With Vibrant Visuals, taigas use a coolish humid volumetric fog setting, which slightly fades the distance in an orange tint. Taigas have coolish color grading tints the environment with a colder blue color, and cold sunlight which appears slightly brighter at dusk and dawn.

Announcement

[edit | edit source]
September 29, 2018During MINECON Earth 2018, the Minecraft community voted on which biome to update next. The taiga biome was the most voted biome; therefore, foxes, campfires and sweet berries food sources and plants are to be added to the biome in Java Edition 1.14.[1]

Java Edition

[edit | edit source]
Java Edition Alpha
v1.2.0previewAdded the snowy-covered taiga biomes along with many other biomes. However, the biome was fairly different to their modern counterpart. A notable difference was the use of oak trees as spruce and pine trees had yet to be added. All taigas were snowy and were defined by having a rainfall value of over 20% and a temperature value between 10% and 50%.
Java Edition Beta
1.2Spruce and pine trees now generate instead of oak trees.
1.4Wolves were added and can now be found in the taigas.
1.6Test Build 3Short grass can now generate.
1.8Pre-releaseTaigas were reworked as part of the biome overhaul. The new terrain generator replaced the old version with a new taiga biome.
Due to issues in the new terrain generator, taigas now generate without snow.
Java Edition
1.111w48aChanged the temperature value from 0.3 to 0.05, so taigas can again generate with snow layers.
12w01aAdded the taiga hills biome as a variant with a hilly terrain.
1.7.213w36aThe default taiga biome now generates without snow.
A fairly rare dedicated snowy taiga biome has been added.
Both types of taigas now generate with ferns and the new large fern.
Taiga is now required for the new "Adventuring Time" achievement.
1.814w27aAdded rabbits, which spawn in taigas.
1.1016w20aVillages made of spruce materials such as logs and planks now generate in the taiga biome.
1.1418w47aAdded pillager outposts, which may generate in taiga biomes.
18w49aAdded sweet berry bushes, which commonly generate in taiga biomes.
19w07aAdded foxes, which spawn in taigas with a red fur texture.
1.2023w12aAdded trail ruins, which can generate in taigas.
23w17a"A Familiar Room" soundtrack can now be played in the taiga.
1.21.525w02aPigs that spawn in taigas are now the cold variant.

v0.15.0build 1Villages built with spruce wood can now generate in taiga biomes. This used to be an exclusive game feature.
