Structure guidelines

This is a chat forum. You can reply to anything in any active branch.

To start a thread, users may comment in the TC, or Topic Creator, of a branch to start a discussion about something not covered by any other unarchived branch, topic, or thread, provided that the topic or thread is not too old. Please note that as a general rule the {{outdent}} template (or "fake outdent"s) should not be used in TCs; a discussion needing an outdent is a sign that it should be split from the TC into its own topic.

The branches

[edit | edit source]

There are five branches in this forum: Realm, Miscellaneous, Minecraft Wiki, Minecraft, and Digital. Each one is used to chat about its respective topic.

  • The Realm branch covers everything related to A Minecraft Wiki Realm (AMCWR). However, only things that strictly apply to the Realm should be discussed here rather in the Minecraft branch.
  • The Miscellaneous branch mainly covers real life, but also covers everything else that doesn't fit into other branches. This includes things like school, literature, social interactions, history, and so much more!
  • The Minecraft Wiki branch covers everything about the Minecraft Wiki, other users in it, other related wikis, or just wikis themselves if they're relevant. This includes the MediaWiki software, Wikipedia, Fandom, the Discord server, interlanguage wikis, the board, etc.
  • The Minecraft branch covers most Minecraft related topics (including spinoffs, websites, and videos), official and unofficial, apart from AMCWR. This includes Mojang, add-ons, mods, Minecraft YouTubers, Minecraft-related websites, and, of course, Minecraft itself.
  • The Digital branch covers everything unrelated to AMCWR, Minecraft, or wikis, such as video games or programming. Topics that are not strictly digital but can be like books or music should go in the Miscellaneous branch.

Topic Creators

[edit | edit source]

At the top of any branch, there is a "Topic Creator" section. There is also a generic comment at the top of the Topic Creator. It has a generic message, stating that you can reply to that comment.

  • In order to start a new discussion, just reply to the comment at the top of Topic Creator directly. Your comment should be written as the start of a new topic, since each comment formatted as such acts as an independent topic. Of course, this means it could be just about anything. Like a random thought, an idea, a story, a description of how you're feeling, or any other message. This is also a good place to {{ping}} someone.

Splitting

[edit | edit source]

Keep in mind, every comment / reply is a "topic".

A topic may be split when:

  • It has 16 replies by 3 or more users, or 20 replies by 2 users. The top level comment counts as a one of these replies.
    • If the comment is a reply to the topic creator, split it into a completely new section of the branch.
  • The discussion gets off topic
  • The topic gets so long that a second, third, fourth, etc. topic is necessary
    • Especially if the indentation has gone too far, because 2 or more users are replying back and forth to each other.

When splitting, be sure to modify the indentation as if it's its own topic, move it to the bottom of the page (or a different branch if necessary), and give it a title.

  • If the topic is in the topic creator, this usually means reducing the indentation by one.
  • The indentation should be reduced such that every reply to the top level comment loses the same amount of indentation.
    • And the top level comment should have no more indentation.

Also, if it looks like one comment is a reply to another comment, but the indentation of the comments doesn't indicate so, do consider modifying the indentation to make more sense.

  • You might want to ask the person who made that comment if they think this makes sense, before you do this.

Finally, if many comments in the Topic Creator all seem related to each other, but they're all separate topics, consider merging them into the same topic.

  • You might want to discuss this merge / split before you do it. If so, then create a new reply to that Topic Creator, describing your proposed merging / splitting of the topics.

Archiving

[edit | edit source]

If a topic in a Topic Creator (i.e. a reply to the TC), has been around for seven days and discussion is unlikely to continue, it should be archived.

  • The reply should be moved to the most recent respective TC archive for its page.
  • For practical reasons, many replies should be archived all at once in this fashion, but the logic for qualifying for archive should still apply to each reply individually.
  • If an old reply has gotten recent activity, you should consider splitting it into a new topic, unless it has too few replies to it.
    • If you do split the reply, follow the normal splitting guidelines and don't archive it. Also note that topics should be in chronological order of their first comments.

Eventually, there will be many inactive topics (outside the Topic Creator) on a given branch. When this happens, you should consider archiving the topics. A good rule for inactivity is 2 or more weeks since the last comment. If this archive ends up being controversial or if you're unsure about it, then start a new topic to discuss the archive. Create the topic as a new section, rather than adding it to the TC.

  • When a set of topics is archived, make them all a subsection of a new section on the archive page. For example, the topics being archived might be titled "My cat" and "The orchard" (i.e. those are their section names). They would be placed under a new section, like so:
    • Section 3
      • My cat
      • The orchard
    • The top section of the archive ("Section 3" in the example) should simply be called "Section N", where N is the index of the section. The first archive of an archive branch would be called "Section 1", the next archive would be called "Section 2", and so on.
  • Finally, if you had to create a discussion for the archive (as described earlier), include that discussion's section in the archive too (once consensus has been reached and the disucssion is over). Like so:
    • Section 3
      • My cat
      • The orchard
      • Discussion

Branch archives are made at "User:CF/Archive/<branch name> <number>", with a separate archive created when the last one eventually gets too long. An archive section (as described above), can be composed of any number of chat topics, based on when they were archived, and potentially a topic discussing the archive itself. Each archive section should uses a H2 header.

As a general rule, make sure to not edit or modify any comments when splitting, merging, archiving, or moving them. Adding hatnotes or comments of your own in order to clarify things is okay though.

Questions and suggestions

[edit | edit source]

The CF can always be branched in case its structure becomes imbalanced. Before doing so, make sure to discuss the creation of the new branch with the other members of the CF. At least 2 members must support the branch and the discussion should exist for at least 4 days before creation. Any opposition must be overridden before creation.

If you have any questions, please ask the community either in the MCW branch or this page's talk page.

If you want a guideline to be changed, please post on the talk page.

About

This chat forum is a place where users can come to hang out, relax, and chat with other editors (Kind of like the discord server but on wiki). This small community is a safe place to just... talk.

This chat forum started as a single page when PhoenixAsh89 and Nerdyguy2000 were chatting on various topics, which became slowly off topic. These topics can be found in the archives of their talk pages.

  • The original chat was created on User talk:PhoenixAsh89/chat. ArduFish, Øscar, and Hoangminhle2011 joined that chat over time.
  • Then, with the speed of the conversations growing, NG2K suggested a larger scale chat, with a community. So, the chat forum was restructured into the current page.
  • After that, several users joined the Chat forum. See the table below below for more information.
18 July, 2024The original chat page is created.
1 August, 2024PhoenixAsh89, the host of the chat page, is forced into inactivity by local storms in real life. NG2K assumes that he is busy with school or something.

Guidelines & Disclaimers

Politeness and consideration guidelines

[edit | edit source]

  • No controversy is intended by any comment on this chat forum, and no controversy should be caused by any, and all comments should be treated as such, unless negative or offensive intentions are completely clear and unequivocal, in which case those comments should be removed. Note that comments on the main CF page's talk page are subject to the talk page guidelines rather than these.
  • Despite the first point, the phrase "no offense intended" or similar phrases should be used when applicable.
  • Please do not intentionally and/or knowingly offend or disrespect any user here.
  • Spam and/or vandalism, racism, profanity, and other similar behaviors should be counted as disrespect and therefore should never be in this forum.
  • This chat is a safe place. No one should be judging anyone here!
  • Please, no offensive or unwise language. Any such should be replaced with [spoiler]@#$%&!@#$%&!.
    • Make sure to actually use symbols instead of swear words, because swear words are bad practice on the wiki in general. In fact, if you want to swear, it might be better to directly state how you're feeling. e.g. "That makes me feel disrespected!"
  • Politeness and honesty are valued here! Please give your honest opinions here. We will not judge you. And please be as polite as you can be.

To put it shortly, make this a perfect chat forum! That can't be against the rules, can it?

Any breaking of rules will be reported to, uh, the person who broke the rules with a polite warning. Persistent rule breakers are also probably breaking the wiki rules, and thus will probably be blocked.

Other guidelines

[edit | edit source]

  • Please do not put "(unrelated)" to change the subject of a topic. Instead, comment in the topic creator.
  • Staying relatively on topic is encouraged, but slowly transitioning to another topic is also encouraged; it allows us to split the topic and have more diverse topics with the discussion still in full swing.
  • Do not create long threads of short, pointless comments. The chat forum is a place for casual discussion, not simple chatter. While in a discussion, one or two comments like "wow that's so weird lol" are allowed; always assume good faith.
  • Please be careful with what you're discussing here, there are a few topics we really shouldn't talk about.
    • Talking about politics is okay, as long as it doesn't end in debating or arguing. Respect one's opinion, we're free to have our own thoughts.
    • please end the topic if it becomes offensive or insulting

CF Indicator

[edit | edit source]

To show that you are a member of the Chat-Forum, you optionally can add the following code to your userpage:

<indicator name="CF">[[File:Chat forum button.png|35px|link=User:CF]]</indicator>

It will add a little icon, or indicator, to the top portion of your userpage, aligned to the right on the same line as the page title. An example is on Simanelix's userpage.
