Negative numbers are not whole numbers since whole numbers are defined as non-negative integers, which contain 0 and all positive integers (1, 2, 3, and so on). Whole numbers are used to count items that cannot be broken down into smaller pieces or fall below zero, such as objects or quantities. Negative numbers, which indicate values less than zero, do not match the notion of whole numbers
The method to represent and work with numbers is known as the number system. A number system is a system of writing to represent numbers. It is the mathematical notation used to represent numbers of a given set by using digits or other symbols. It allows us to operate arithmetic operations such as division, multiplication, addition, and subtraction.
Numbers are used in various arithmetic values applicable to carry out various arithmetic operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, etc. which are applicable in daily lives for the purpose of calculation. The value of a number is determined by the digit, its place value in the number, and the base of the number system.
Numbers generally also known as numerals are the mathematical values used for counting, measurements, labeling and measuring fundamental quantities.
Numbers are the mathematical values or figures used for the purpose of measuring or calculating quantities. It is represented by numerals as 2,4,7, etc. Some examples of numbers are integers, whole numbers, natural numbers, rational and irrational numbers, etc.
There are different types of numbers categorized into sets by the number system. The types are described below:
The whole numbers are the numbers without fractions and are a collection of positive integers from 0 to infinity. All the whole numbers exist in number lines. All the whole numbers are real numbers but we canβt say that all the real numbers are whole numbers. Whole numbers cannot be negative. The whole numbers are represented by the symbol βWβ.
Examples of whole Numbers
Natural numbers are also known as counting numbers including zero are parts of whole numbers, such as 0,1,2,3,4,5, etc. excluding negative integers, fractions, and decimals.
0, 10, 12, 56, and 100, etc. all are examples of whole numbers.
Answer:
The whole numbers are set of real numbers that includes zero and all positive counting numbers. Whereas, excludes fractions, negative integers, fractions, and decimals.
All the whole numbers are also integers, because integers include all the positive and negative numbers. But its vice versa is not true, i.e. all the integers are not necessarily to be whole numbers, because they also include negative numbers, which are not included in the whole numbers.
Hence, negative numbers are not considered whole numbers because, whole numbers are set of real numbers that exclude negative numbers, fractions and decimals.
Question 1: Can a square root be a whole number?
Answer:
Yes, if the square root is a perfect square of any real number then, a square root can be a whole number.
Question 2: Is 1/23 a whole number?
Answer:
No, 1/23 is a fractional value and the set of whole numbers does not includes fractions.
Question 3: Is -3 a whole number?
Answer:
Since, the whole numbers are set of real numbers that excludes fractions and negative counting numbers, -3 is not a whole number.
Question 4: Is -10 a whole number?
Answer:
Since, the whole numbers are set of real numbers that excludes fractions and negative counting numbers, -10 is not a whole number.
Question 5: What is 7+5?
Answer:
7+5 = 12 , Both 7 and 5 are whole numbers and their sun 12 is also a whole number.
Question 6: What is 10+(-4) ?
Answer:
10+(-4) = 6, Here 10 and 6 is a whole number , but -4 is not a whole number.
Question 7: What is 15-8 ?
Answer:
15-8 = 7, Here 15, 8 and 7 all are whole number.
Question 8: What is 5- 9 ?
Answer:
5-9 = -4 , Here -4 is naot a whole number , because it is negative.
Question 9: What is 4 x 6 ?
Answeer:
4 x 6 = 24 , Both 4 and 6 are whole numbers, so their product, 24, is also a whole number.
Question 10: What is -3 x 7 ?
Answer:
-3 x 7 = -21, The result, β21, is not a whole number because it is negative.
