The majority of locations listed under Widgiemooltha on Mindat relate to nickel mines on the Widgiemooltha Dome, a Kambalda type komatiite channelised nickel orebody. See Kambalda location on Mindat for more information. Both the Kambalda and Widgiemooltha Domes were formed at the same time by magmatic events. Widgiemooltha is 50 kilometres south-west of Kambalda.

The Widgiemooltha Dome is 450 square kilometres composed of medium to coarse grained completely equigranular crystalline granite (crystals the same size throughout). It occurs with some biotite and ferromagnesium minerals. Mineral units within the Widgiemooltha Dome include the Lake Zot Dolerite, Widgiemooltha Chert, Widgiemooltha Komatiite and the Mount Edwards Basalt.

Lake Zot Dolerite, up to 300 metres thick, coarse grained, wholely equigranular crystalline dolerite, athough some porphyritic and other variable areas are known. Epidote effected, carbonates and sodium metamorphosed areas are found near major structures.

The Widgiemooltha Chert is a deep sea chemical sedimentary unit above the Widgiemooltha Komatiite, 1-40 metres thick, of sulphidic, granphitic and siliceous cherts, finely laminated and showing ptygmatic folds post sedimentation (veins which buckle plastically from pressure from behind during injection -think thin wiggly lines!). The unit is often intruded by Lake Zot Dolerites.

The Widgiemooltha Komatiite Unit is 30-300 metres thick, with clearly defined interflow sediment intervals, spinifex textured zones (A1, A2, and A3), and cumulative zones (B2) developed rythmically throughout the unit. The flow units range from more than 24 to less than 3. The Komatiite is high in magnesium. The Widgiemooltha Komatiite hosts at least 15 channelised Kambalda type komatiite nickel orebodies, 5 of which have been mined, and the remaining 10 being sub-economic.

The footwall is the Mount Edwards Basalt, low to medium Mg mafic extrusive rocks, metamorphosed to upper greenschist facies. Mineralisation includes chlorite, actinolite, rarely epidote, quartz and albite. The unit's thickness has not been measured.
