Forum:Infobox re-design

This is a proposal to implement an improved version of the infobox design we had while on Fandom. I've added two example images below, but you can find the css for this design on this page, "Version 0.5" is the latest version, and the version being proposed for implementation. All content namespaces have their own colours, so I recommend using this css to look at those as well. There is a guide on adding the css to your common.css on that page.

This design was created by Spongecake89, the design builds upon the design used on the Fandom wiki, which was created by Supeika. Credit belongs to those two users.

Our current infobox design, that being no design at all, is a downgrade over the design we had at Fandom in my opinion and in the opinion of many users I've talked to. There are few things that the Fandom wiki does better than our wiki, and the infobox designs are one of them. The Fandom design did indeed have issues, mainly that it looked entirely out of place compared to the rest of the wiki, and was a bright green even on dark mode. I believe the first issue is solved by the fact that this wiki is far more themed and customised than the Fandom wiki ever was, and the second issue is solved by the fact that with the new design, the colour of the infobox also changes depending on dark/light mode.

 Oppose. I'm not a huge fan. The bright green and it having depth draws too much attention. It is also inconsistent with the blue links and accent colors everywhere else on the page. I like the customization outside the content space, but here it seems unnecessary. — Misode (talk) 19:27, 10 December 2023 (UTC)

I'm not sure why any customisation in the content space would be unnecessary, we don't need to relegate things looking good to only outside of the content space. In practice the colours fit very nicely in my opinion, they match the grass colour which is quite a prominent part of the skin. - Harristic / Talk 👁 Image

Note that the infobox always had some sort of 3D effect, we only got rid of it recently since the old look from 2011 was weird with the gray border and we didn't have much time to work on that before the fork happened.  Support – I do like the new look much better, especially with the rows now being more distinct. Given the feedback here, I've now implemented Spongecake's design as a gadget that's enabled by default.  Strong Support - I love the new design. The colors look so good and it remembers the new Minecraft Bedrock UI style, matching the game design. I really liked the portable infobox design that we implemented in Fandom and it feels so good to bring it back, because it looks really good.  Support – I think this actually looks a bit better than the Fandom wiki infobox design, perhaps due to the smaller borders, and is definitely better than the plain blue header. However, the bright color on light mode (on different namespace themes) makes the contrast slightly hard to see, especially since the current implemented version doesn't have the text shadow from the screenshots. –Sonicwave ^talk 20:13, 19 December 2023 (UTC)

Yeah, the contrast between the white text and the light green background in light mode default namespace (3.07) is below the recommended color contrast. The same is the case to a lesser extent with the light themes for MC:SM (3.28), MCD (4.04), and MCL (4.33); for MCE the contrast is even worse (2.78). For comparison: >4.5 is recommended (with >7 being optimal), and >3 is the minimum for larger text (source), so maybe it's just enough for everything except MCE, given that the header text is a bit larger than the content; however it's definitely not optimal. Adding text shadow back helps with that a bit but doesn't fix it entirely (Firefox doesn't recognize any change in contrast). I'm not sure how to fix this fully; changing the text color to black (or another dark color) looks ugly. Does text size affect how well the text contrasts? If so we could increase the text size, because currently it's actually smaller than other header text (like the main page grass block headers). I was going to suggest a thin black border around the text as well but I have a feeling that would be ugly. - Harristic / Talk 👁 Image
