Hello this Post should not be in this location and should be moved to the projects page as it is not related to Sandbox. Make sure that other Posts you post in Talk is related to the page itself.– Unsigned comment added by MinerMinerMain (talk β€’ contribs) at 03:49, 13 March 2023 (UTC). Sign comments with ~~~~

How is this page different?

[edit source]
Latest comment: 27 November 20123 comments2 people in discussion

1) How are these pages treated differently from user-space or user-talk pages?

2) Similarly, How is the auto-generated "user sandbox" page (linked above), different from any other user-space page? ETA: I note that the link produces a page with lower-cased name, unlike pretty much all the real pages. Even when ultradude moved my first attempt at a user sandbox, he left it with a capitalized page name.

Is this just a playground for the nameless IPers? --Mental Mouse 11:27, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

1)They aren't, but they're treated as collaborating projects, which userspaces by their very definition are not. it's got the safety of a userspace, with collaboration.
2)They are for you, personally. They can be used for nearly anything you'd want to use them for. --Kizzycocoa 21:22, 26 November 2012 (UTC)
Ah, so I probably should have started the Anvil Mechanics rewrite over here -- but hey, Opaquer and I have been happily collaborating in my userspace. --Mental Mouse 14:07, 27 November 2012 (UTC)

Post update questions

Two questions about the new sandbox usage since the rewrite:

  1. Are users still allowed to create subpages as a free wiki project, such as a page rewrite, or are we going to require them to use a personal sandbox for that?
  2. Do we still the the deletion log (MCW:Sandbox/Deletion Log) since the sandbox no longer is for page proposals? The pages that were deleted all violate current notability (except one which would simply be a tutorial), so listing it hardly seems useful, even as an archive.

–KnightMiner Β· (t) 00:55, 3 May 2015 (UTC)

The sandbox can be used for anything as long as it's not a violation of the Mojang/Minecraft or Curse TOS; strictly speaking the rules "should" apply here too, but given the sandbox's purpose I don't see much reason to actively enforce them for the most part. That means, if people want to continue using the sandbox (or subpages of it) to propose new pages or rewrites or whatever, they're free to do that, but they should no longer count on any such work remaining indefinitely, especially if it's done directly on the main sandbox page.
I don't really have anything to say about the deletion log. If others think it should remain here, it might as well, though I could also see it being moved elsewhere or simply deleted. γ€Œγƒ‡γ‚£γƒŽε₯΄εƒοΌŸοΌγ€? Β· ☎ Dinoguy1000 01:08, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
For the most part, assuming the sandbox is emptied every once in a while, the only rules I see it needs to follow are #1, #3, and #5 (or Minecraft TOS, no harassment/insults, and no advertising). As for the subpages, it might be worth noting that those can be created, but will be deleted if there is no related activity for too long. –KnightMiner Β· (t) 04:12, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
Works for me, though to be honest I don't intend to actively police subpages in terms of activity levels (though that shouldn't stop other admins from doing so, or people from requesting deletions after a reasonable amount of time). γ€Œγƒ‡γ‚£γƒŽε₯΄εƒοΌŸοΌγ€? Β· ☎ Dinoguy1000 04:35, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
It might be helpful to state that subpages are allowed on the header, basically so anons know its allowed. Something like "Subpages of this page are allowed to be created for longer projects, such as an article proposal or testing changes to a template, though they will be deleted if there is not a lot of activity for a while." Activity would basically be defined as edits to the page or a discussion related to implementing the page. –KnightMiner Β· (t) 03:32, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
I've added a note as requested. Personally, though, I'd recommend editors use their userspace for such projects. γ€Œγƒ‡γ‚£γƒŽε₯΄εƒοΌŸοΌγ€? Β· ☎ Dinoguy1000 04:55, 15 May 2015 (UTC)

Many users have made subsections of their user sandbox such as User:PepijnMC/sandbox/Tutorials/Creating an advancement. Pls how do you do this??? --MishMoshKeel21 (talk) 12:58, 25 December 2017 (UTC)

You probably just create the subpage you want, like any other page. For example, User:MishMoshKeel21/sandbox/Stuff/thing. -75.179.18.235 16:33, 25 December 2017 (UTC)

Visual Editor

[edit source]
Latest comment: 25 February 20245 comments3 people in discussion

Does anyone know why I can't pull up the Visual Editor? I'm new here btw CokeUnity2257 (talk) 16:00, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
Can we please get the visual editor thig up in here? CokeUnity2257 (talk) 03:31, 16 April 2023 (UTC)

@CokeUnity2257:
Pages that are not a part of certain namespaces do not have a button to open the visual editor. The visual editor is discouraged in those namespaces, because it doesn't have appropriate buttons and UI for doing things in the namespace. We don't want inexperienced users to make edits in the visual editor that break formatting or cause issues to the source wiki-text being wrong.
A namespace is the name (in text) before the : (colon) in a wiki page's name. Take for example, User:Simanelix. Here, User comes before a : (colon), therefore User is the namespace of User:Simanelix. Here is a quick list of namespaces:
  • The main namespace - if a page's name does not start with [some namespace]:, then that page is part of the main namespace. Examples are Pig, Cow, Eye of Ender, and even Minecraft.
  • Talk - contains talk pages for the main namespace. For example, Talk:Pig is the talk page for Pig.
  • User - contains "user pages". Every user has a dedicated page for their username (User:[their username]). If a user doesn't have a userpage setup, then the content of a new page is combined with Special:Contributions/[their username] to create a substitute.
  • User talk - contains talk pages for the User namespace. For example, User Talk:Simanelix is the talk page for my user page, User:Simanelix.
  • Minecraft Wiki - contains most pages that describe different elements of the wiki, such as style guides, rules, and the wiki news{{:}} Minecraft Wiki:News. You can also use MCW: as a shorthand for Minecraft Wiki:, like this: MCW:Style guide. This is also where the forum and community portal can be found: Minecraft Wiki:Forum and Minecraft Wiki:Community portal.
  • Minecraft Wiki talk - contains talk pages for the Minecraft Wiki namespace. For example, Minecraft Wiki talk:Style guide is the talk page for the style guide, where you can discuss changes to the style guide before applying those changes to the style guide. There is no shorthand for Minecraft Wiki talk:, such as MCW talk: or MCWT:.
  • Template - contains template pages. These pages allow us to use shorthands for repetitive content on the wiki, such as {{wip}}, {{For}}, and {{only}}. Templates also help with complicated formatting, such as the majority of tables on the wiki, and the side panels: {{Item}}, {{Block}}, {{Mob}}, {{Enchantment}}, {{Effect}}, {{Entity}}, {{Structure}}, and {{Biome}}.
  • Template talk - contains talk pages for templates.
  • There are namespaces for the spin-off games
    • Minecraft Dungeons
    • Minecraft Legends
    • Minecraft Earth
    • Minecraft Story Mode Note that the game is called "Minecraft: Story Mode" but we can't include the : due to technical reasons.
  • And there are namespaces for the talk pages for the pages about the spin-off games:
    • Minecraft Dungeons
    • Minecraft Legends
    • Minecraft Earth
    • Minecraft Story Mode
Now, the only name spaces that have the visual editor button are:
  • The main namespace
  • The spin-off game name spaces (listed above).
  • The User namespace, which is very convenient.
So, if you want to edit a sandbox page using the visual editor, you have to either:
  • Use your userspace, such as User:CokeUnity2257, User:CokeUnity2257/Sandbox, or User:CokeUnity2257/[some other page].
  • Manually edit the URL of the sandbox page. This is as simple as putting ve after the ? and before the action= in the URL of the page. [1] is what you get as a result. In fact, you could do this on any page, including talk pages, but I storng recommend against that. The visual editor has problems sometimes, and it doesn't have the right implementation for nested replies.
  • Also, remember: capitalization of the page name beyond the first letter matters. User:HELLO and User:hELLO do not map to User:hello, but User:Hello does.

Resetting the sandbox

I think it's time to reset the sandbox I know the page was protected due to a productive edit war. So that is why I created this section. 2601:981:4401:1CC0:4879:3D09:2C03:414E 16:05, 9 February 2025 (UTC)

It's been 9 hours and the sandbox still hasn't been reset yet. 2601:981:4401:1CC0:4879:3D09:2C03:414E 23:13, 9 February 2025 (UTC)

It has been cleared already several days ago by the way some of these sections might need to be archived as they are very old. 2601:981:4401:1CC0:DA57:3F35:16BD:4B20 18:45, 22 February 2025 (UTC)

This is a public sandbox, and protecting it would defeat the main purpose of a public sandbox. Rert 17:53, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
As Rert said, we might need the protection to be lighter. We can semiprotect so users won't vandalize the sandbox as their first edit, which is mostly the case. BigEarsQuake 2 (talk) 17:56, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
