Can tools, armor, ect. break in creative mode?
What does that 'k' stand for in the Weapons and Tools table? --Eyvind 08:42, 26 December 2010 (UTC)
The maximum durability of weapons and tools is given by the formula D = , where D is the durability of the tool and k is a constant related to the material the tool is crafted from.
I was compiling information for what I thought would be a bug report to Notch when I realized how the armor/durability thing actually works. I have done quite a bit of testing on this now and am 100% positive that this is exactly how it works in Beta 1.1_02. I have some screenshots that would help illustrate the point, but I don't know how to upload image files to the wiki -- I just registered today because I thought this was too important to keep to myself.
I was also wondering if it would make sense to move this to the main Armor page. It seems a little too useful to be hidden away on the Item Durability page. --CanuckMonkey 21:24, 30 December 2010 (UTC)

I'm noticing that my tools are lasting about twice as long now, but I'm not sure if the new system is that simple. Just a heads up, as I have classes to attend! --JohnnyMadhouse 18:06, 13 January 2011 (UTC)
Is contents of this page still true? -- Rei000 09:59, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
"Prior to Beta 1.2 (single player) and 1.0 (multiplayer), when a tool broke, the game considered the last block broken as if it had been done with your hands, often not causing a drop." I've been playing since before Beta, and I don't remember this happening. Can anyone confirm? Hydraxan14 04:40, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
The wiki said wood tools used to have 60 uses, but now it says 66. Which is it? (33*2=66 and 66*2=132.) HotdogPi 00:32, 24 February 2012 (UTC)
The page stated that any time the player takes armorable damage, that's two points of durability for armor. I've been testing armor and that's just wrong for, e.g skeleton arrows. I'm not sure about creepers or enchantment-protected damage though. Anyone know for sure, before I get around to testing that? --Mental Mouse 19:48, 11 November 2012 (UTC)
Thorns is said to adversely affect the rate at which armor degrades. The mechanics of this should be here. Cultist O 15:09, 22 January 2013 (UTC) As of Minecraft 1.16, Thorns no longer affects the durability of armor. The behavior was unintended and was classified as a bug. Thorns now only uses durability when activated, no longer using extra durability. -- tie004uk 15:38, 6 September 2020 (UTC)
It's random. Armor has disappeared after being hit (although it never protects me), swords sometimes disappear when I press a button (may be dependent if I'm pressing it with the sword), and a sword has disappeared when I die with keep inventory on, but never when using it, and it does deal more damage, unlike the armor. The sword has only disappeared if I haven't used it. Note: Negative damage items using /give. HotdogPi ⑬㊲ 00:11, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
This must have been done quickly and without testing because I just tested a couple of tools and such to see what their durability is, and while the durability says x/x the actual uses is x+1. Here's the items I used and their amount of uses. (0 durability counts as 1 use left).

The Indev and Alpha sections under History are incorrect. I joined minecraft during alpha. I never played indev, and I remember item durability being added months *after* I started playing. Therefore, durability was added in alpha. I and thousands of other players had gotten used to playing SMP for at least a month or two with tools that never broke. Durability being added was seen by many players - myself included at the time - as a tedious change that detracts from fun, similar to hunger being added much later. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.32.242.159 (talk) at 19:47, 22 November 2015 (UTC). Can anyone confirm that F3+H doesn't work if you hit it while in your inventory? (That is, you can't set it when you are in your inventory. It works fine if you hit it while not in inventory. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Nacoranisalive (talk • contribs) at 11:49, 14 September 2018 (UTC) (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~
I'm trying to see item durability in Bedrock, and I am pressing f3+h, but nothing is happening. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by RealAnaban (talk • contribs) at 20:25, 06 January 2019 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~
Missing all relevant durability values. Can someone please fix this? 104.247.236.253 19:01, 8 February 2020 (UTC)
"Items with the Unbreakable tag do not deplete their durability or break when used. Their durability is not shown, even with advanced tooltips enabled, though it is retained in the NBT data. Such an item can be acquired using /give @s <item_name>{Unbreakable:1b}."
So to indicate an unbreakable tool, there would be "Unbreakable" in place of the durability remaining, if it is used? 76.64.52.246 19:59, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
Is an item destroyed when its durability reaches zero, or at the next use of the item after it's already at zero? Amatulic (talk) 03:25, 17 March 2022 (UTC)
First of all, many pages about a tool (e.g. iron pickaxe) have a note like: "this tool has X durability in Java and X+1 in Bedrock". That isn't mentioned anywhere on this page. Is it even true? Asking as a Java player, I don't have access to Bedrock.
I thought this was caused by the difference in treating 0-durability items. As far as I know, it works like this: an iron pickaxe in Java has 250 hits, a pickaxe with 1 hit left can mine one block and it breaks. In Bedrock it also has 250 hits, but a pickaxe with 1 hit left can mine a block and still exist as a 0-durability item, which then can mine one additional block. Is this correct? Is it the same for all tools? (Flint and steel, for example, doesn't mention that).
Second: the crossbow. History section says that "The durability of crossbows is increased to 465 to match Bedrock Edition", but the list says that a crossbow in Bedrock has 464 uses? This might be related to the 1st issue.
Third, also probably related: the brush. In Java, a brush has 64 durability, and it can be used on the armadillo 4 times and it breaks: every brushing counts as 16 uses. In Bedrock, it can be used 5 times - again, cause of the 0-durability item existing after four uses, I think? If so, the "approximately 12 uses" should be just removed from this article.
Finally, regarding Edu tools: the sparkler and glow stick. Sparkler's article doesn't mention what durability it has, and glow stick's article says 95, while here, they are both mentioned as having 100 uses. Which is correct?

I don't see any information regarding the Mace's durability (the new weapon released in the 1.21 update). Can somebody add that information please? I would do it myself, but I an uncertain on its information. - Alex26337 (talk) 10:59, 10 July 2024 (UTC)
About two thirds of the intro describes the colors used for the durability bar... and it doesn't even go into much detail. Should someone add a section for that? FluffyGuardian70 (talk) 18:57, 17 May 2026 (UTC)
