Tricky Trials[1] is a major update released on June 13, 2024,[2] as Java Edition 1.21 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.0. The update focuses on the trial chambers, which serves as a place for "combat adventures", and miscellaneous features related to "tinkering."[3] The update adds new copper and tuff blocks, the crafter, bogged, and 20 paintings, among many other features. In the trial chambers, trial spawners spawn hostile mobs as a challenge, including breezes that jump in the air and shoot wind charges at players. Vaults reward players for completing trials. Ominous bottles can be used to trigger ominous trials for even bigger rewards. Maces are new melee weapons that can each be crafted by combining a heavy core and a breeze rod. The name of the update was revealed in Minecraft Monthly on April 26, 2024.

Experimental features for this update have been released prior to the finalized release as part of 1.20.3 and 1.20.5 on Java Edition, and as part of 1.20.50, 1.20.60, 1.20.70, and 1.20.80 on Bedrock Edition.

damage, identical to that of a iron sword in Java Edition and a stone sword in Bedrock Edition.
  • Has an attack speed of 0.6, 40% slower than that of a golden, diamond, or netherite axe.
  • Attacking after having fallen at least 1.5 blocks performs a smash attack. The more blocks a player has fallen, the greater the damage of the smash attack.
    • Successfully striking a target with a smash attack negates any damage accumulated from the fall, similar to how a wind charge works, as well as resetting all vertical momentum.
    • Maces have a unique explosive particle effect when executing a smash attack.
    • In addition to the normal unique smash attack sound, a different unique sound is played performing a smash attack from a fall of more than 5 blocks.
    • Other entities near a smash-attacked target receive knockback, with a stronger effect when having fallen more than 5 blocks before attacking.
    • Smash attacks activates the Wind Burst enchantment.
  • Can be repaired with breeze rods using an anvil.
  • Has three exclusive enchantments:
    • Density: Increases the damage of the smash attack per block fallen before the smash attack is performed.
    • Breach: Reduces the effectiveness of armor protecting from damage dealt by the mace.
    • Wind Burst: Creates a small wind burst when the smash attack is performed, similar to the one generated by a wind charge.

Team up or go solo and discover new decorative blocks, hostile mobs, items, weapons, paintings, and the trial chambers – a sprawling structure stuffed with traps and treasures for every player!

minecraft.net on Tricky Trials

Me, a close combat fighter? In Minecraft, apparently so. I could blame it on how satisfying rage-click karate chops are, but the truth is I never learned to use any other weapons. Luckily, that’s (hopefully) about to change. For the Tricky Trials Update, I’m upping my combat skills by heading into the trial chamber as the unofficial welcome committee for our two new mobs: the bogged and the breeze. Sure, they might be hostile, but we all have our quirks, don’t we? And I think they can teach me a trick to two. Like archery!

I have my aim set on the bogged, the new skeletal mob equipped with poison arrows, which are deadly upon impact. Just like my dance moves! Speaking of moves, the breeze will quite literally sweep you off your feet with theirs. And that’s the iconic eyebrows aside! The breeze’s wind charge projectile attack even uses a gust of wind to send foes flying.

I can’t wait for the new update to be out, then these new weapons will be all mine and I can take over the Overworld, mwuahahaha! As long as I defeat these two mobs first, that is. And for that I have my trusty karate chop. Hy-ah!

Being the thrill-seeker, the daredevil, the reckless lunatic that I am, I plan to challenge myself in 1.21 by taking on an ominous trial – all by myself! The thought of all the possible rewards I could reap from an ominous vault – should I be victorious – is keeping me awake at night. It must be mine! Sure, I had some minor setbacks where I died horribly a dozen of times (you can’t spell ‘perish’ without ‘Per’) in normal trial chambers in the snapshots. And sure, teaming up with people could make it easier, but I don’t have friends want to share all that glorious loot! I’m confident that the increase in difficulty will sharpen my senses and prepare me for whatever I might face. All I need to do is find a friendly neighborhood illager raid captain, get my hands on an ominous bottle, then search high and low for my local trial chamber! I might not be successful on my quest, but the sheer adrenaline rush from dodging poisonous arrows, navigating maze-like corridors, or getting knocked back across the room by a breeze are rewards enough. But who knows? Maybe I’ll become the best speed-runner in the Ominous Trials Any% respawn constantly category
