Tuff is an ornamental rock, occurring in underground ore blobs below Y=0 and as part of sulfur springs.

Obtaining

[edit | edit source]

Breaking

[edit | edit source]

Tuff drops as an item if mined by any pickaxe. If mined without a pickaxe, it drops nothing.

  1. ↑ These durations ignore any other influential factors (e.g., Mining Fatigue) and are measured in seconds. For more information, see Breaking Β§ Speed.

Natural generation

[edit | edit source]
πŸ‘ Image
A tuff blob.
See also: Ore (feature)

Tuff can generate in the Overworld in the form of ore blobs. Tuff attempts to generate 2 times per chunk in blobs of size 0-864, from elevations -64 to 0, in all biomes. Tuff can replace stone, andesite, diorite, granite, and deepslate. Any ore that generates in tuff becomes its deepslate variety.

Additionally, tuff can generate in large ore veins that consist of iron ore and blocks of raw iron below Y=0. It also generates as part of sulfur springs, allowing for deepslate ore variants to be found on the surface if they generate replacing tuff blocks.

21w11aOres that spawn in tuff now convert to their deepslate variant.
21w15aTuff blobs now also generate between Y=0 and Y=16.
Due to Caves and Cliffs being split into two parts, tuff now generates only between Y=0 and Y=16. because the world generation has been reverted and moved to the Caves & Cliffs Prototype Data Pack.
21w16aIf the prototype data pack is applied to a world, tuff can now generate as part of iron ore veins below Y=0.
1.18Experimental Snapshot 1All previous changes to tuff generation from the prototype data pack have now been implemented into the base game.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • In real life, tuff is a strong type of igneous rock which forms from compressed ash resulting from volcanic eruptions, which sees extensive use in Armenian architecture. Tuff in Minecraft is somewhat similar, with the texture representing that of a rough, uneven surface which appears to be the result of volcanic ash formation.
