Granite is a block of igneous rock, found in large pockets underground or in sulfur springs.

Obtaining

[edit | edit source]

Breaking

[edit | edit source]

Granite can be mined using any pickaxe. If mined without a pickaxe, it drops nothing.

  1. ↑ These durations ignore any other influential factors (e.g., Mining Fatigue) and are measured in seconds. For more information, see Breaking Β§ Speed.

Natural generation

[edit | edit source]
See also: Ore (feature)

Granite can generate in the Overworld in the form of ores.

In Bedrock Edition, granite attempts to generate in two batches in all biomes in the Overworld. The first batch generates 2 times per chunk in ores of size 0-864, from elevations 0 to 60. The second batch has 1⁄6 chance to generate ores of size 0-864, from elevation 64 to 128. In Bedrock Edition, granite can replace stone, andesite, diorite, polished andesite, polished diorite, and polished granite. In Java Edition, granite can replace stone, andesite, diorite, tuff, and deepslate.

In addition, granite generates as part of large copper ore veins, coral reefsβ€Œ[Bedrock Edition only], and in desert village armorer houses, as well as part of sulfur springs.

Usage

[edit | edit source]

Granite has the same blast resistance as stone, meaning it can be used as a substitute for stone when building.

Development

[edit | edit source]
December 18, 2013Jens Bergensten posts the first images of granite.

Java Edition

[edit | edit source]
Java Edition
1.814w02aπŸ‘ Image
Added granite.
14w33aGranite can no longer be used to craft stone slabs.
1.1418w43aπŸ‘ Image
The textures of granite have been changed.
Granite can now be used to craft granite slabs, stairs, and walls.
19w11aGranite is now bought by villagers of the new mason profession.
1.1620w07aUnpolished granite is now also renewable, as piglins offer nether quartz (used to craft diorite) during bartering, and both of which are crafting ingredients of granite.
1.1721w06aThe height limit was expanded down to Y=-64. Granites are temporary generating from Y=-64 instead of Y=0.
21w07aGranite ores are now larger and more spherical, but less common.
Granite is no longer able to generate below Y=0.
21w15aThe changes to granite generation in the previous 1.17 snapshots have been reverted, but they can be re-enabled with the Caves & Cliffs Prototype Data Pack.
1.18Experimental Snapshot 1Granite once again generates how it did in the 1.17 snapshots without the use of a data pack.
experimental snapshot 4Granite ores are less likely to generate on the surface.
Strips of granite sometimes generate in stone shores and stony peaks.
21w37aStrips of granite no longer generate in stone shores and stony peaks.[1]
26.2snap1Added sulfur cubes, which have the ability to absorb granite, providing the football/regular effect to the mob.
snap4Granite can now generate as strips or blobs between sulfur and cinnabar.
snap6Granite is no longer dispersed between sulfur and cinnabar.
Granite now generates as part of sulfur springs.
Changed the sulfur cube effect from football/regular to slow bouncy.

Bedrock Edition

16-21 granite can now be sold to stone mason villagers as part of their third tier trades.
πŸ‘ Image
The textures of granite have been changed.
1.11.0beta 1.11.0.4Trading has been changed, stone mason villagers now have 1/3 of a chance to buy 16 granite as part of their third tier trades.

1.17.0
Experiment
Caves and Cliffs
beta 1.16.230.56If the Caves & Cliffs Experimental Gameplay toggle is enabled, granite ores are now larger and more spherical, but less common.
1.18.0beta 1.18.0.20Removed β€œCaves and Cliffs” experimental toggle. New granite generation are now available through normal gameplay.
Granite blobs are now expected to be less likely to generate on the surface, but they generate in a wrong way.
beta 1.18.0.21Granite blobs now generate as expected.
26.20
Experiment
Drop 2 of 2026
Preview 26.20.23Added sulfur cubes, which have the ability to absorb granite, providing the football/regular effect to the mob.

Granite now generates as part of sulfur springs.
Changed the sulfur cube effect from football/regular to slow bouncy.

Java Edition

[edit | edit source]
Java Edition
1.814w02aThe newly-implemented , andesite and diorite, as well as the polished versions for each, use stone's ID and are distinguished using metadata.
14w06aStone now uses the newly-implemented model json file models/block/cube.json; previously the geometry was defined in the game code itself.
14w10aStone with numerical metadata variants 7 through 15, which are inaccessible through normal gameplay, now have no model πŸ‘ Image
rather than appearing identical to stone.
14w25aStone and its variants are now defined via block states rather than by numerical metadata. Prior to this version, the numerical metadata variants of stone were as follows:

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • Granite rock comes from underground magma chambers that turned cold. It is often pinkish in color because of its alkali feldspar minerals.
    • Diorite is another magma chamber rock, but it has less quartz in it than granite. This is in accordance with granite's crafting recipe in Minecraft, which consists of nether quartz with diorite.
