This page describes content that has been removed and was only present in earlier versions of Minecraft.

In Java Edition, shrubs convert to dead bushes when updated, whereas in Bedrock Edition, they convert to short grass.
This feature is exclusive to Legacy Console Edition.

The shrub was an unused variant of short grass that did not generate naturally. In Bedrock Edition, it used the name fern and took the appearance of short grass.

Obtaining

[edit | edit source]

In Legacy Console Edition, the shrub can be obtained only through the creative menu. In Java and Bedrock editions, it could be obtained only by using commands such as /give or placed in the world using commands such as /setblock.

Breaking

[edit | edit source]

When broken normally, shrubs have a 1⁄8 chance of dropping wheat seeds, due to being a type of grass. This drop rate is affected by Fortune like normal grass as well. Shrubs can be obtained as an item using shears.

Usage

[edit | edit source]

Bone meal

[edit | edit source]
This feature is exclusive to Bedrock Edition.

Bone meal can be used on short grass to create large fern.

Appearance

[edit | edit source]

In Java Edition, the shrub used the texture of a dead bush. The only visual difference between the shrub and the dead bush was that the shrub appeared randomly off-centered and sunk into the ground, like short grass and ferns.

In Bedrock Edition, the "fern" used the texture of short grass, which was also biome-colored.

Color

[edit | edit source]
πŸ‘ Image
Shrubs placed in an intersection between a taiga, a dark forest and a desert in Legacy Console Edition

In Legacy Console Edition, shrubs appear similar to Java Edition, but they change color based on the biome they are placed in, similar to the green shrub.

These values are generated by the biome dyeing algorithm, which depends on the biome's temperature and downfall. See biome colors for more information.

Sounds

[edit | edit source]
This section uses a sound table which may not accurately represent the sounds associated with this feature.

Because of MC-177082, subtitles for falling on blocks may not have existed at this point in development, so a dedicated sound table accounting for this may be required.
