A glass pane is a transparent block that can be used as a more efficient alternative to glass blocks. It can be dyed into stained glass panes.

Obtaining

[edit | edit source]

Breaking

[edit | edit source]

Glass panes can be obtained using a tool enchanted with Silk Touch. If one is broken without a Silk Touch enchantment, it drops nothing.

Glass panes do not have an assigned tool; they are mined at the same speed regardless of what tool is used.[1]

Natural generation

[edit | edit source]

Glass panes generate naturally as windows in villages, woodland mansions, and ancient cities.

Usage

[edit | edit source]

Glass panes are more efficient to use than glass blocks, as six glass blocks can be crafted into sixteen glass panes, yielding 22⁄3 panes per block. Windows built using glass panes can be up to 267% (22⁄3 times) larger in area than windows built with regular glass blocks.

πŸ‘ Image
A single space between two glass panes results in a 2Γ—1 hole, which spiders can pass through.

Placement

[edit | edit source]

If placed without anything on the sides, they appear as a thin vertical β€’ shape, 2Γ—2 pixels in size; but when other blocks occupy adjacent spaces, it becomes flat or turns into a πŸ‘ Image
or πŸ‘ Image
or πŸ‘ Image
shape depending on the items surrounding it. The collision box is identical to the shape of the pane. Therefore, two glass panes placed with one empty space in between form a gap that is two blocks wide.

Glass panes are never oriented horizontally. Horizontal glass surfaces must be made from glass blocks.

Glass panes can be waterlogged, which means water can be in the same place as a glass pane, unlike regular glass.

History

[edit | edit source]
There is an associated page listing all historical changes related to the appearance and/or sounds associated with this block in further detail than below; see /Asset history.

Java Edition

[edit | edit source]
Java Edition Beta
1.8Pre-releaseπŸ‘ Image
Added glass panes, which use the same model as iron bars.
Glass panes naturally generate in villages.
Java Edition
1.0.0Beta 1.9 Prerelease 2Glass panes no longer drop as an item when destroyed.
Beta 1.9 Prerelease 4Glass panes now attach to some non-full blocks, mainly stone slabs, stairs, pistons, sticky pistons, farmland, iron bars, doors, signs, and fences.
?The above no longer happens.
1.3.112w17aGlass panes can now be recovered by harvesting them with a Silk Touch-enchanted pickaxe.
1.7.213w41aπŸ‘ Image
The model of glass panes is now always prismatic, as opposed to the prior thick-rimmed thin panes from earlier.
All glass panes now connect to glass[verify] and iron bars.
1.814w03aπŸ‘ Image
Glass panes now appear completely opaque.
14w03bπŸ‘ Image
Glass panes now render as normal again.[2]
14w10aπŸ‘ Image
The models of glass panes have been changed slightly; texture mapping has been modified, and there is now an outer plane for connected edges.
14w10cGlass panes now only cull each other horizontally in some directions, and for only certain state combinations.
14w25aπŸ‘ Image
Further changes have been made to the glass pane model: changes have been made to texture mapping, the shading is different, and panes are now subject to smooth lighting/ambient occlusion.
Glass panes no longer cull each other horizontally at all.
14w26aπŸ‘ Image
The ambient occlusion change from 14w25a has been reverted, however glass pane culling remains as it was in that version.
14w31aGlass panes now cull each other horizontally in some cases from some directions. Several "inner" faces still remain, however.
1.8.2pre5πŸ‘ Image
Changed the texture mapping on most glass pane directional combinations.
1.915w31aπŸ‘ Image
Glass panes without any connections are now a basic central post, rather than a plus shape as though connected in all four directions (πŸ‘ Image
).
πŸ‘ Image
Glass panes now use a multipart system for model definition, changing the appearance of all 15 possible connection states.
Glass pane horizontal culling has been improved considerably, now seemingly matching 1.7.2's seamlessness. Vertical/top-bottom face culling, however, remains nonexistent.[3]
15w44aπŸ‘ Image
The side faces of glass panes are once more affected by directional shading.
1.1116w39aGlass panes now generate in woodland mansions.
1.1217w15aGlass panes now connect to the solid back sides of stairs.
1.1318w10cGlass panes can now be waterlogged.
1.1418w43aπŸ‘ Image
The texture of glass has been changed, changing how glass panes look. The edge texture remains unchanged.
19w02aGlass panes are now used to lock maps in cartography tables.
19w11aCartographer villagers now buy 11 glass panes for 1 emerald.
1.14.3pre3Torches can now be placed on glass panes.
1.1620w15aWalls now connect to the bottom and sides of glass panes.
1.18pre5πŸ‘ Image
The edge texture for glass panes has been changed.
1.1922w13aGlass panes now generate in ancient cities.
