My previous edit was reverted for "speculation", so I'll post the explanation of how we know character in the image is Bruno here.

1. Bruno's appearance in the painting is based on the scene where the player character, Manny, first greets him to the afterlife, which can be seen in motion here (timestamp 17:48). As you can see, same bag, same lack of clothes, same skull, same proportions.
2. The description describes the character as the "mean midget", which is a quote lifted straight from the game that refers to him. It can be found on the script here, and in gameplay here (timestamp 21:31).

@User I see you left a note saying "the plaster abrasions on the windowsill differ." Forgive me for not seeing your point here, but The abyss is a piece that is directly based on the Sánchez Cotán piece that is clearly stated in the next table cell to be the inspiration for this painting. Zetterstrand himself claims taking inspiration once and it's clear that it was taken a second time.

"Plaster abrasions" is an absurd reason to disqualify this source. This piece is a 48x48 pixel art, so there will inevitably be some deviation. If you have a stronger argument, then by all means present it. And I implore you do so before thinking about reverting my edits again. I have made my case. And I removed it altogether. You didn't move it out of trivia, you left it in there, and trivia should not be in two places.

Just because some fool on Reddit judges a word as "swear" doesn't mean it is, this wiki isn't censored so it could have been spelled out. However, we shouldn't cite Reddit anyway except for posts known to be by people associated with game development.

The only legitimate place I can find with the unpixellated painting is on the artist's own website (you have to click on "older entries" a few times) and this article in Swedish, which shows the original painting. Neither site has any commentary about any word in the painting.

The most we can say about it is that the artist included some graffiti in the lower left corner, which isn't visible in the pixellated version. ~Anachronist (talk) 16:41, 26 May 2026 (UTC)
