Moving to Template:Rcat

Support, after discussing on the minecraft wiki discord server which starts on this message. We should also reformat it like User:Fadyblok240/Redirect category shell without being a direct copy from Wikipedia. Also expand Template:UsefulRedirect/reasons. Blockofnetherite Talk Contributions 21:10, 13 December 2020 (UTC)

Support move as tagger; I don't think we should reformat it like Fadyblok's as that uses full templates inside the shell instead of just having one template for all; the latter is a lot more useful and less cluttered for wikis that don't need like a thousand Rcat templates. Expanding the /reasons subpage should be enough.  Nixinova T  C   21:14, 13 December 2020 (UTC)

Support for the given reason of categorizing redirects more generally, and agree with Nixinova that it doesn't need reformatting. –Sonicwave talk 21:40, 13 December 2020 (UTC)

Comment So should we also have a {{R}} as a redirect to {{Rcat}} as I don't think there is anything harmful with saving 3 characters? So if we are not reformatting it, and keeping the template the same, just moved while leaving a redirect behind, I just expand /reasons so that way for pages that are both plural and lowercase (like Zombified piglins) where the template could be {{R|plural|case}} or {{R|plural and case}}? Blockofnetherite Talk Contributions 01:02, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
{{R|plural|case}} is the easiest way to do it . Nixinova T  C   01:04, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
For some reason, I thought the template did not support {{R|plural|case}} but after testing, it actually did (I am still a beginner in making templates). I personally think it looks better to have two line breaks in between "This page is a redirect from a plural...discuss." and "This page is a redirect from an alternate...when searching.", rather than one line break in between them, as shown in Baked potatoes rather than Zombified piglins. Blockofnetherite Talk Contributions 01:17, 14 December 2020 (UTC)

Comment So can we move this template now, leaving a redirect? It seems like it is all support, and I do think it is fine the way it is, and reformatting it like Fadyblok's is not so necessary. We could expand /reasons, but I don't see anything bad with moving to {{Rcat}}. Blockofnetherite Talk Contributions 17:44, 14 December 2020 (UTC)

Moved. Will create {{R}}. Blockofnetherite Talk Contributions 18:02, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
I would rather have {{R}} contain the redirect reasons so it is easier to be used directly and this template be named {{Rcat shell}} since the individual reasons can be considered to be rcats. Also, Rcat is so short that further abbreviation is not really necessary. Fadyblok240 (talk) 21:22, 18 December 2020 (UTC) updated 02:15, 19 December 2020 (UTC)

Wait Should we have a bot move this page to {{Rcat}} already then? --Simanelix (T|C) 03:42, 5 April 2024 (UTC)

Add namespace reason with from and to parameters

[edit source]
Latest comment: 5 April 20241 comment1 person in discussion

The proposal is to add a namespace parameter for the Category:Redirects between namespaces. However, it would be nice to clarify 2 extra parameters for which namespace it's coming from and which one it's going to. This would be useful semantically and would help make the bullet point explaining the redirect on its noredirect=true page.

Also, from and to parameters could be used by other reasons in the future. For example, it would also be useful on the Category:Redirects from inflections category I added. There really isn't much of a limit on this.

The from and to parameters would also allow categories like Category:Redirects between namespaces to be split up into sub categories, either for maintenance reasons or for general ogranization.

This proposal could very easily be quite controversial. If you think this sounds too complicated, then I guess either:

  • maintenance is a lot simpler than I think it is
  • or I really don't know enough about what I am talking about.

Should I switch this page to use a module?

[edit source]
Latest comment: 25 April 20245 comments2 people in discussion

I have big plans to rework many of the redirects on this wiki to have more descriptive reasons. I will go check through all of the redirects and make a list of examples.

  • Light (block)
    • should be "alt" because "Light" is an in-game name that is different than the target page's name
    • should be "je" because the alternative in-game name only exists in Java Edition
    • should be "disambig" because a disambiguation parenthesis had to be added to the name, since "Light" is ambiguous with the light mechanic
  • Brick Block
    • should be "alt" because "Brick Block" is an in-game name that is different than the target page's name
    • should be "be" because the alternative in-game name only exists in Bedrock Edition
  • Blue Shulker
    • should be "dv" because it is a mob with a data value (an NBT data value) that changed its state (and therefore gave it a new name)
    • should be "mob" because "dv" should be able to be split into "block", "item", "entity", and "mob", for convenience
  • Blue Shulker
    • should be "dv" because it is a block with a data value that changed its block state (and therefore gave it a new name)
    • should be "block" because "dv" should be able to be split into "block", "item", "entity", and "mob", for convenience
  • AEC
    • should be "community" and "alt", because it is an alternative name used by the community
  • Arrows of wind charged
    • should be "community" and "alt" as well, because (if I am not mistaked) it is an alternative name used by the community
  • Java Edition 20w14infinite and 20w14infinite
    • should be "mojang" and "alt", since it is used by Mojang (in the launcher)
  • Java Edition 20w14~, and 20w14~
    • should be just "alt", since it is another name used by in-game
  • Poisonous Potato Dimension
    • should be "mojang" and "alt", since it is used by Mojang on Minecraft.net, but it is not used in-game (if I am not mistaken)
  • Potato Dimension
    • should be just "alt", since it is used in-game (in the achievement descriptions)
  • Armour
    • could be "british" instead of "spelling", because it is specifically an alternative british spelling, but this is really common among all of the alternative spellings here on the English wiki

In order to satisfy those plans, I've been thinking about rewriting this page to use a module. The reason for this is to allow for more flexibility with the Reason template. You see, I want alt (and potentially other names) to be able to combine with other names in a more intuitive manner, and I just think it would be easier for me to maintain this and add support for more reasons if it used the module I already made.

The module I want to use is:

What it does is it checks for alternative names for parameters, and unifies them into just a few parameters, as well as passing all un-named params as named-params, and calling the Redr module once for each param. This should work pretty nicely with the switch statement in Redr/Reason.

Welp, looks like no one is going to oppose me. That means that I get to deploy these changes in a few days. Yippee! --Simanelix (T|C) 20:50, 21 April 2024 (UTC)

Other languages

[edit source]

I think my ideas could be more useful on other language wikis.

Split Redr/Reason

[edit source]

Actually, while we are at it, splitting Redr/Reason into subpages for each reason would make it easier for new users to edit. --Simanelix (T|C) 02:34, 21 April 2024 (UTC)

Splitting the reasons template into multiple subpages seems confusing to me. Reasons are already on a subpage, splitting them further would just create dozens of templates with a single sentence. I don't see how this would be easier for anyone to edit, much less new users. The reasons also don't need to be edited often anyway. Additionally when you convert the template to a module, so should the reasons as expandTemplate should be avoided whenever possible. 👁 Image
MarkusRost (talk) 21:03, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
You don't like expand template? Per our discord discussion, I will convert this whole thing into a module --Simanelix (T|C) 21:36, 21 April 2024 (UTC)

Alright

[edit source]

I'm going to convert this page to a module because apparently no one else cares. Also, some people keep using UsefulRedirect. I'll make sure to just make that redirect here. I'll also make to (very importantly) update the documentation for this template. --Simanelix (T|C) 13:00, 25 April 2024 (UTC)

Merging "caps" and "miscap" maybe?

[edit source]
Latest comment: 23 April 20241 comment1 person in discussion

I think my points make sense.

1.They do very simmilar things. The only difference is that "miscap" is for capitalizations that shouldn't be in articles, which is already controlled by the Style Guide (and common sense).

2.Nobody uses it. There is only one page in the "miscap" category (Tnt) and there is a bunch of redirects that should go there but are in the "caps" one. 👁 Image

Redr needs updated

[edit source]
Latest comment: 25 October 202510 comments3 people in discussion
It is requested that an edit be made to the protected page at Template:Redr.

This template must be followed by a complete and specific description of the request, so that an editor unfamiliar with the subject matter could complete the requested edit immediately.
Edit requests to protected pages should only be used for edits that are either uncontroversial or supported by consensus. If the proposed edit might be controversial, discuss it on the protected page's talk page before using this template. To request that a page be protected or unprotected, make a protection request. When the request has been completed or denied, please add tl| after the left curly brackets to deactivate the template.

{{Redr/Reason|{{{1}}}|nocat={{{nocat|}}}}} needs to be replaced with
{{Redr/Reason|{{{1}}}|nocat={{{nocat|}}}|nl={{{nl|}}}}}

And I can't change it since the page is protected. Can you please add the parameter? --Simanelix (T|C) 19:55, 12 June 2025 (UTC)

Just out of curiosity, what does that do/change?

It makes it so the |nl= parmater actually works. Without this change, the parameter does nothing. In particular, this would fix pages like Clay pot, which use {{avoid double redirect}}. --Simanelix (T|C) 20:12, 12 June 2025 (UTC)
Also, ", even though it should (and will, soon)" needs to be removed, since that was added by me back when I was planning on making the page a module. And making it a module is completely unnecessary, since there is no a way page could ever possibly have more than 6 reasons. --Simanelix (T|C) 20:20, 12 June 2025 (UTC)

Strong support that this should be done as those extra newlines are super annoying. --MinecraftExp123(talk|contribs) 03:33, 24 July 2025 (UTC)
Another fix would be to just add more reasons to Redr/Reason. -- Simanelix (T|C) 03:52, 24 July 2025 (UTC)
Changing Redr/Reason would also be a good idea. Ugh. So complicated. -- Simanelix (T|C) 03:52, 24 July 2025 (UTC)
Yeah. I guess we could do that and then deprecate {{avoid double redirect}}. --MinecraftExp123(talk|contribs) 03:53, 24 July 2025 (UTC)
I will rework it into a module soon! Also I'll make it easier to manage and edit for other editor, somehow. And hopefully easy for other language wikis to use. -- Simanelix (T|C) 19:19, 25 October 2025 (UTC)

Small retool

[edit source]
Latest comment: 11 October 20254 comments2 people in discussion

A number of the parameters explicitly mention redirects being for the game or features. Since the wiki is focusing more on non-game media, or even just non-vanilla games, I think these should be rephrased slightly to be more neutral. Realshow19 (talk) 17:31, 10 October 2025 (UTC)

I think right now most reasons are already quite neutral. You can change any of them yourself at Template:Redr/Reason. --MinecraftExp123(talk|contribs) 02:21, 11 October 2025 (UTC)
