Rules to Write Number Names (Number in Words)

Writing the number in words or number names depends on the Place value of the Number. If a number is in the tens position the spelling of the number changes.

Rule 1: Read the number from left to right.

Example: 452 → start from 4.

Rule 2: Each digit has a place value.

Example: In 7,532 → 7 = thousand, 532 = five hundred thirty-two.

Rule 3: Break the number into groups.

Example:
• International: 123,456 → 123 | 456
• Indian: 12,34,567 → 12 | 34 | 567

Rule 4: Learn basic number words.

Example: 1 = one, 12 = twelve, 40 = forty.

Rule 5: Use a hyphen between tens and ones.

Example: 21 = twenty-one, 34 = thirty-four.

Solved Examples

Example 1: Let’s take the number: 25,340

Step 1: Read from left to right: → Start with 25.

Step 2: Look at place value → 25 is in the thousands place.

Step 3: Break into groups → 25 | 340

Step 4: Write each part in words

→ 25 = twenty-five
→ 340 = three hundred forty

Join and write full number name: Twenty-five thousand three hundred forty

Example 2: Write Number 28 in words.

Solution:

Number "2" is on the tens position so it will be written as "Twenty"
Number "8" is on the ones position so it will be written as "eight"

Finally, the number will be written as "Twenty-eight"

Example 3: Write the Number 147 in words.

Solution:

Number "1" is on the hundreds position so it will be "One hundred"
Number "4" is on the tens position so it will be "Forty"
Number "7" is on the ones position so it will be "seven"

Finally, It will be written as "One hundred and forty seven"

Indian System of Writing Number Names

The Indian System of Writing Number Names is a traditional way of expressing numbers in words. This system uses a specific placement of commas and unique nomenclature for large numbers, differing from the International Number System.

In the Indian System:

• The first comma comes after 3 digits from the right.
• Subsequent commas are placed after every 2 digits.

International System of Writing Number Names

International System of Writing Number Names is widely used globally, especially in English-speaking countries, for representing large numbers. It follows a structured naming convention and specific comma placement rules that differ from the Indian System.

In the International System:

• Commas are placed every 3 digits starting from the right.
