The Lleyn Peninsula, an undulating spur reaching out from the mountains of Snowdonia, is the most westerly point of Gwynedd. Twenty five miles long, it averages eight miles in width, and separates Caernarfon and Cardigan Bays. It is bordered to the east by the A487 Caernarfon-Porthmadog road.

At various times manganese, iron and lead-copper mines have operated on the Lleyn.

There are 16 granitic intrusions and contemporary intermediate to rhyolitic volcanic rocks, some of which are peralkaline (Croudace 1982; Leat & Thorpe 1986). All the rocks have undergone mild metamorphism.
