Ukrainian food retailer Silpo expands number of rooftop solar power plants to 13
The supermarket chain Silpo had equipped 13 of its stores with rooftop solar power plants (SPPs) by the end of 2025, compared with just three such locations at the end of 2024.
At a presentation at EuroShop 2026 in DΓΌsseldorf, a trade fair held every three years and positioning itself as the world's largest retail exhibition, Silpo also reported an increase to 44 in the number of stores whose refrigeration equipment operates on carbon dioxide (COβ) and propane (R290).
Since the start of Russia's full-scale aggression in 2022, 34 stores have replaced old refrigeration equipment with new energy-efficient systems.
Another example cited was the Silpo Re Cycling supermarket (Sofiivska Borshchahivka village near Kyiv), which was built using funds from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and on Feb. 28, 2022 received BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) green building certification.
"This supermarket consumes 80% less energy because it is equipped with a solar power plant and a geothermal heat pump," the presentation stated.
According to Silpo's 2024 report, the chain began its gradual transition to more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient refrigeration equipment in 2023, declaring that all new supermarkets are equipped with systems operating on environmentally safe refrigerants β carbon dioxide and propane. As of the end of 2024, there were seven such stores.
Overall, according to the presentation, the chain comprises 312 supermarkets with an average area of 1,344 square meters each, which are visited daily by 857,580 guests.
All new supermarkets are opened under a thematic or conceptual supermarket program launched in 2014. According to the presentation, this approach helps in negotiations with developers, who prefer Silpo stores as anchor grocery tenants in their projects.
Since the beginning of the full-scale aggression in 2022, nearly 40 supermarkets have been destroyed as a result of the invasion, but 17 of them have been restored. In addition, 38 new supermarkets have been opened and eight renovated, although opening plans for this year have not yet been announced.
"All stores have generators, solar power plants, and Starlink to provide guests with high-speed internet and access to electricity, and now, when it is very cold, we treat our guests to hot tea," the presentation also stated.
Silpo also said it has the highest NPS (Net Promoter Score) in the industry among Ukrainian retailers. Its loyalty program has 5 million regular guests, and its stated development strategy accelerates recruitment and enables the company to attract top industry talent.
Silpo-Food LLC, which develops the Silpo chain, was established in early August 2016. According to information on its website, the chain operates 310 supermarkets in 60 cities across Ukraine and four Le Silpo delicatessen markets in Kyiv, Dnipro, Kharkiv, and Odesa.
According to YouControl, the founder of the LLC is PJSC closed non-diversified venture corporate investment fund Retail Capital (100%, Kyiv). The ultimate beneficiary is Volodymyr Kostelman.
Silpo-Food's revenue for the first nine months of 2025 increased by 13.8% compared with the same period in 2024, reaching UAH 75.87 billion, while net profit amounted to UAH 956.6 million compared with a net loss of UAH 767.1 million in the same period of the previous year.

The company develops retail chains in various formats: Silpo supermarkets, Fozzy wholesale hypermarkets, Fora convenience stores, Thrash!Trash! discounters, Bila Romashka pharmaceutical supermarkets, and E-ZOO pet stores.
