Tutorials revamp initiatives

Latest comment: 19 June13 comments9 people in discussion

This has always been in my mind for years now, that the current tutorials pages are not being utilized to the fullest. We could be the main source of written Minecraft tutorials, but most of the tutorials there are neglected due to updates and the lack of maintainers/contributors. What I am proposing here is to give some ideas on how to make these pages more stand out and useful to general players.

Spotlight random or curated tutorial page on the main page.
This can be our first attempt to increase tutorial page exposure to the public. Currently I'm speculating that niche tutorials aren't being found by people merely because either no one is searching for it, or no one knows that it exists. Helping random or interesting contraption or tutorial to be spotlighted can encourage users to improve on existing tutorial pages.
Facilitate supporting templates.
Templates like Template:Inventory, Template:Sign, Template:Toast are all already useful to be used in tutorials pages, albeit them being underused. We can extend this to other franchises as well.
Proper and enforced style guide.
Currently, style guide is lacking in the details on how to write tutorial pages. Creating new rules or guidelines can be beneficial for long-term consistency in style and content.
Linking from mainspace articles.
This particular idea should be done carefully as there are a lot of things that may go wrong if we allow this too loosely. One inspiration is to make a similar case on version guides which are exposed by the pink message box on every major update page e.g. on Update Aquatic. General overview tutorials might get linked from redstone dust for example, which may have link to Tutorial:Redstone. We may also add these similar message boxes inside tutorials pages themselves, so that readers in a redstone-related page get notified of another redstone-related tutorials.
Update: it seems that this exists already which is nice (Template:Relevant tutorials), but broader coverage is still needed.
Revamp Tutorials page to be more like main page with buttons and whatnot; a hub for tutorials.
We should not list all possible tutorials here, except we should only list the essential, basic, or introductory tutorials in buttons similar in spirit as in the main page. I have briefly dicussed this in Talk:Tutorials#Rethinking_the_design_of_this_page, but we can move the discussion here to get more feedback and audience.
Encourage content creators to document their contraption within the wiki, or use the wiki as the written version of their tutorial video.
This one might be too far-fetched, but can be a way to increase wiki exposure.
Use wiki social to promote new contraptions.
This is one of the ways to promote our tutorials outside of the wiki.

Note that I, as the proposer, would not be the one to initiate these ideas. These are merely for suggestions, in case there are editors out here who want to take on the initiatives.

Let me know what you think of these. – ItsPlantseed|03:14, 14 March 2026 (UTC)

Yeah, seems mostly good. I agree with making it similar to mainpage and calculators page but I think all tutorials should be listed in some format. We could have a tab bar which would list pages such as "Tutorials/Farming"/"Tutorial:Farming". I think the tab pages should have comprehensive list of tutorials in that topic maybe with collapsible sections like "Mobs" and "Items". 👁 Image

"Encourage content creators to document their contraption within the wiki, or use the wiki as the written version of their tutorial video."
This should not be done. The wiki should not be a place for content creators to self-promote. Catscratcher07 (talk) 12:57, 14 March 2026 (UTC)

 Support:
  • spotlighting tutorials, maybe they can be eligible for article of the month, but otherwise it'd be hard to keep up with and/or take up space.
  • using supporting templates, if we can use it and it's good, why not?
  • linking from mainspace articles, this is sometimes already done but would be good to prevent confusion
👁 Image
 Strong support:
  • proper style guide, tutorials are a mess. And they have a lot of potential.
👁 Image
 Oppose:
  • making tutorials page into a main page-like thing. Not everything needs to look like the main page, and articles are for presenting information, not showing off style. Plus, if not all tutorials were linked, how would readers even find them? They'd literally just be floating in the void.
  • the thing with content creators. The wiki is not social media, this is a wiki. Sure we can have some videos on tutorial pages, but a tutorial shouldn't be "here watch this video and here's what it says in text".

 Neutral:
  • social media promotion.

I personally find the current layout discouraging since you are just looking at a bunch of links. Specific tutorials should only be encouraged to be found by using the search bar, which I have added some time ago. We could do spotlight of specific tutorial within the tutorials page itself. – ItsPlantseed|12:31, 16 March 2026 (UTC)
Having to use the search bar may be confusing; people would have to type in the namespace prefix, although that could be fixed by a searchbar on the main tutorial page if we're really just trying to make absolutely anything with links like the mainpage, which I still disagree with. Having to search either way would create a need for a lot of redirects, 'cause tutorials aren't as consistently named as articles are. I suggest that we have the main tutorial page be normal and not flashy, but point to some good tutorials and provide links to subpages that do have all tutorials. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  14:12, 16 March 2026 (UTC)
I agree with the majority of the proposed ideas, but so far the most critical initiatives are enforcing a style guide for tutorial articles, and actually updating outdated information. Those need to be done first, and then the rest can be done.
An draft for the style guide can be found here, however it is still a work in progress. – RedX (talk) 15:34, 14 March 2026 (UTC)
I do think tutorials should also cover outdated versions. Perhaps subpages can be done for earlier iterations. – ItsPlantseed|15:41, 14 March 2026 (UTC)

Support this. I've anyways wished we had tutorials for the 3 different versions that LCE is stuck on, as well as NN3DS edition's latest release 👁 Image

I have no reasons to oppose any of this, though I feel like the content creator thing should be done very carefully, if at all. If we get them to document their own videos, it should still feel like wiki-style writing. 👁 Image

Neutral on having content creators writing here. If they’re going to help promote the site, I can see the appeal, but a wiki isn’t a blog. We can’t just let someone spotlight whatever they want. If this is going to happen it should follow some kind of notability, maybe particular builds that have influenced the franchise somehow. Realshow19 (talk) 22:22, 14 March 2026 (UTC)

We can also feature tutorials. This has been done in the past and there are enough tutorials feature-worthy. Same goes for Article of the Month if that can finally get implemented.
  2. 👁 Image
There are also a few other templates like {{Info}} and more.
  3. 👁 Image
I think the general style guide should be used most of the time and people should use common sense writing quality articles, a separate tutorial style guide feels unnecessary.
  4. 👁 Image
    but only link finished quality tutorials in mainspace, not some of the stubs there are now. And not in prose, just {{See also}} or {{Relevant tutorial}}
  5. 👁 Image
Tutorials is one of those pages that perfectly fit for the main page design. I've seen you improving it on other pages so if you could design it I trust it'll be perfect.
  6. 👁 Image
Of course content creators may share their information and help improving but tutorials should not be a rewritten version of YouTube videos or external sources.
  7. 👁 Image
    No opinion.
Lastly, I want to add that most tutorials are just a lot of hard work that needs to be done and most editors don't really care. I think that'll never really change, but we could make an overview of high-quality tutorial pages (1 2 3 4), wip/rewrite (5 6), and unnecessary tutorials that better be deleted (7 8 9). Very Strong Support the tutorials need lots of cleanup for the style guide. Many tutorials also have inaccurate info 👁 Image
