Mountains are a type of terrain that appear in many different designs, but are typically described as very tall. They can be part of the badlands, possess a barren surface made of stone, or have snowy slopes. Conquering a mountain can be quite a challenge, especially for unprepared players, due to the several dangers, including deep patches of powder snow, the ramming goats, and of course, its steep and towering heights. However, not all mountains are generated equally as it can sometimes just be a big meadow hill or a short mountain peak, so it's best to find one with very tall terrain and a "peak" biome.
There are many reasons for conquering a mountain. Perhaps you want to harvest its massive reserves of snow (Snowy slopes, jagged and frozen peaks only), stone, calcite (Stony peaks only), spruce wood (Groves only), iron, coal, or even emerald ore. Or maybe you want to build something cool on top, try to find a deep dark underground for an ancient city, or maybe you simply want to do it for the challenge.
Though mountains, like every biome, are limitless in their possibilities, a reasonable first step to taming the biome is to make the terrain more easily traversable.
To assist in moving through the mountains without changing elevation, a crude bridge will usually be enough. In the case of groves and snowy slopes, powder snow can generate on the ground, damaging anyone that falls in. Building over the snow with a more tame material can be important in these areas. In some cases, an artificial tunnel built into the mountain can also be a good idea.
Mountains are often bordered by steep terrain increases, usually when next to rivers. The nature of these environments often leads to a need for methods of transport that transport players only along the y-axis.
Ladders and twisting vines are cheap options for this. Also, players can create bubble columns to scale a mountain in seconds by creating a pillar of water surrounded by solid blocks, growing kelp in the tunnel to stop the water from flowing, and placing a block of soul sand at the bottom to create a rapid upward current. Magma blocks create downward currents.
Methods to allow players to move horizontally and vertically at the same rate are plentiful. The simplest method is to simply carve a diagonal staircase into the mountain. This method can be sped up with the use of staircase blocks, or slabs for less steep staircases.
At the concept's most extreme level, players can pour buckets of water and lava on top of eachother to create a structure called a "lavacast", which often creates structures with pyramid-like slopes that can be easily climbed.
Occasionally, the terrain of mountains can be terraformed. Though the exact nature of the operation depends on the structure of the mountain and can vary on a case-by-case basis, examples of terrain cleanup can include building tunnels, bridges, or artificial platforms across particularly tricky high-elevation terrain.
