Obtaining every block is where a player gets every single placeable block that is able to be picked up in survival.

(Note that this tutorial will not cover the obtainment of blocks such as bedrock in survival, as these methods are risky and are bannable on servers.)

General Tips

[edit | edit source]
  • A stonecutter is very useful for this challenge because many blocks have dozens of variations only easily obtainable by use of this tool.
  • To complete the challenge, almost every biome will need to be visited. Establish a large transportation network and keep in mind which biomes usually generate next to each other.
  • Silk Touch is needed to get many of the blocks. The enchantment can be obtained in a variety of ways.
  • Certain blocks are used in more crafting recipes than others; the most commonly used blocks are underground ores, sand, gravel, wood, and dyes. The best biome to base out of in terms of availability of these blocks is a flower forest near a river.

Stone blocks

[edit | edit source]

These blocks can be obtained by mining them. They generate very commonly underground. Tuff generates as blobs below Y=0.

These blocks can be obtained by mining stone and deepslate respectively without silk touch. Stone generates above Y=0 while deepslate generates below that (stone gradually becomes deepslate below Y=8).

These blocks can be obtained by mining them. They generate in the Nether.

The block drops itself if silk touch is used, though this is not neccesary, considering that four of the block's dropped glowstone dust can be crafted into this block.

This block can be obtained by mining it in the End.

These blocks can be obtained by mining them using silk touch. Stone and deepslate generate in the overworld while nylium generates in the Nether.

These blocks can be obtained in ocean monuments. Note that elder guardians give the player mining fatigue, and that mining underwater is difficult.

The mining of obsidian requires a diamond pickaxe. The block can be generated simply by having flowing water come into contact with a lava source block. The block generates in massive quantities on the central End island.

These blocks can only be obtained by mining them with silk touch (except for ancient debris).

These blocks appear in the overworld. Deepslate variants can be obtained if the ore replaced deepslate.

Coal ore generates at all elevations, and is most commonly found at Y=45.

Deepslate coal ore is much rarer than regular coal ore. One should mine at Y=0 to Y=7 if they want to obtain it.

Copper ore generates from Y=-16 to Y=112, and is most commonly found at Y=43 and in dripstone caves.

Lapis lazuli ore generates from Y=-64 to Y=64, and is most commonly found at Y=45.

Iron ore generates in every layer except for Y=73 to Y=79, and is most commonly found at Y=14.

Gold ore generates from Y=-64 to Y=32 or Y=256 in badlands, and is most commonly found at Y=-18 or Y=32 to Y=256 if in badlands.

Redstone ore and diamond ore generate from Y=-64 to Y=16, and are most commonly found at Y=-59.

Emerald ore generates from Y=-16 to Y=320, but only in windswept hills and mountain biomes, and is most commonly found at Y=85.

Deepslate emerald ore is much, much rarer than regular emerald ore, only appearing from Y=-16 to Y=7, but since lush caves, dripstone caves, or deep dark biomes can generate below windswept hills and mountain biomes, they are made even rarer. One should mine at Y=0-7 and have many pickaxes in case any of them breaks if they want to obtain it.

These blocks appear in the Nether. They generate at almost every layer.

Nether quartz ore and Nether gold ore are most commonly found at Y=114.

Ancient debris is most commonly found at Y=16. The block does not generate exposed to the air.

Metal blocks

[edit | edit source]

Blocks of copper can be obtained by copper ingots, which can be obtained by smelting raw copper. Crafting 9 copper ingots gives you a copper block. The copper block can oxidize and stopping it from oxidizing requires waxing from honeycombs. This block, alongside every other block in the copper family, is found in abundance in trial chambers.

Cut Copper can be crafted by 4 Blocks of Copper.

Cut Copper Slabs is crafted similarly to any other slab, using cut copper.

Chiseled Copper can be crafted by 2 Cut Copper Slabs.

Cut Copper Stairs is crafted similarly to any other stair block, using cut copper.

Copper Grates can be crafted using 4 Blocks of Copper in a rhombus like shape.

Copper Doors and Trapdoors can be crafted similarly to any other trapdoor and door, but using copper ingots. Oxidized variants of copper doors and trapdoors cannot be crafted.

Blocks of iron can be crafted with 9 iron ingots. To get iron ingots, mine iron ores without using Silk Touch, then smelt the raw iron.

Blocks of raw iron can be crafted with 9 raw iron. Simply mine iron ore without using Silk Touch and don't smelt the raw iron at all. Alternatively, blocks of raw iron can be rarely found inside of large veins of iron ore below Y=0.

Foliage

[edit | edit source]

There are two variants of eyeblossom, roughly corresponding with the time of day the flower is collected. They can be acquired easily in pale gardens, often found near woodland biomes on mountains.

Hay bales naturally generate in most villages.

Logs can be obtained with any tool, including your fist. They generate as part of trees aboveground.

Leaves can be obtained by mining them with shears or silk touch. They generate also as part of trees.

Melon generates in patches in jungle biomes. Though breaking it without silk touch yields melon slices, 9 slices can be crafted into this block, a quantity easily obtainable from just two or three blocks.

Saplings (except mangrove propagule) can be obtained by mining leaves without shears or silk touch. They have a 2.5% (jungle saplings) or a 5% (other saplings) chance to drop. Mangrove propagules are obtainable by mining them in mangrove trees.

This block appears in abundance in lush caves, and can be broken with bare hands.

Dirt-related blocks

[edit | edit source]

Dirt can be obtained by mining them, farmland, dirt paths, grass blocks, mycelium, or podzol without silk touch.

These blocks can be obtained by mining them with silk touch.

Dirt paths can be obtained by mining them with silk touch.‌[Bedrock Edition only][1]

Mob-related blocks

[edit | edit source]

Froglight

[edit | edit source]

Froglight blocks are generated when a frog eats a magma cube, and there are three variants, one for each type of frog. The player needs to breed frogs in both warm, temperate, and cool biomes, before having all these frogs consume a small magma cube.

Slime Block

[edit | edit source]

Slime Blocks are obtained from slimes; specifically, 9 of the slimeballs that they drop. Swamp biomes and certain areas of caves are the most common spots for slime spawning.

Sniffer Egg

[edit | edit source]

Sniffer eggs can sometimes be obtained from suspicious sand in warm ocean ruins. Note that these blocks hatch into sniffers in 20 minutes. Sniffers can also be bred to generate this block.

Wool can be obtained from sheep. One block is yielded if the sheep is killed, while 1-3 blocks are yielded if the sheep is sheared. There are 16 colors of wool, and for each color, 6 blocks are needed, 3 of which are to make a bed and 2 are used for a carpet; thus, 96 blocks of wool are needed in all.
