Stronghold naturally generation?

[edit source]
Latest comment: 17 February 20162 comments2 people in discussion

I didn't found under naturally generation that lava is generated with them. can anyone confirm this or have I overlooked someting? JorianPruim (talk) 13:21, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

You seem to be right! Good eye. I've added it now, if you don't mind. – Sealbudsman talk/contr 13:25, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

Fire Spread

[edit source]
Latest comment: 21 August 20163 comments2 people in discussion

I don't know where else to say this, so I'll put it here.

There are several key differences between how it was before and my edit:

  • The lava does not have to be stationary to spread.
  • "3x3" is more specific than "9 blocks above". I actually misunderstood that as being 9 blocks along the y-axis, which is the reason I performed the edit in the first place.
  • The second level is "5x5" instead of "3x3".
  • The order in which the game considers the locations really does not matter.
  • The picture is helpful in visualizing what's safe and what's not.
  • I believe the way I formatted makes it easier to read and understand.

Juliand665 (talk) 14:25, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

I agree with you actually. I just added a bit clarifying that whole thing about stationary lava .. and added a fakeimage diagram. What do you think? – Sealbudsman talk/contr 01:11, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
I like it! I was confused because I thought stationary lava was the same thing as a lava source, but I just found out it's not. Thanks for the help! Juliand665 (talk) 11:37, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

Wrong renders

[edit source]
Latest comment: 17 August 20181 comment1 person in discussion

The renders on this page should be fixed/changed. The first render uses stretched textures, and Lava Revision 2.png shouldn't be used as the Bedrock edition lava render as the texture on Bedrock is not the same as the old Java texture.--Capopanzone (talk) 18:13, 17 August 2018 (UTC)

Nether

I think lava spreading quicker in nether should be included in "others" category. Ceteri 213.76.78.244 22:45, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

Lava renewable?

With Dripstone filling cauldrons with lava doesn't that mean it's now a renewable block?– Unsigned comment added by 86.155.227.67 (talk) at 15:30, 25 February 2021 (UTC). Sign comments with ~~~~

Lava is not yet renewable in vanilla - as it says on the page, dripstone doesn't yet naturally generate.--Canarussia (talk) 15:37, 25 February 2021 (UTC)

Falling damage

[edit source]
Latest comment: 3 August 20211 comment1 person in discussion

It appears that lava no longer fully cancels falling damage -- at least, not in the same way water does. I was mining in the nether with a potion of Fire Resistance active, and I hopped off a high ledge into a lava flow to get down faster, before the potion ran out. Upon hitting the ground immediately beneath the flow, I died from falling damage, and nearly everything I was carrying fell into the lava flow around me. This may require further testing, but it definitely suggests it does not negate falling damage as described in the history section. 63.230.72.120 04:36, 3 August 2021 (UTC)

Lavalogging?

[edit source]
Latest comment: 26 September 20212 comments2 people in discussion

I can't seem to find any information on the topic, but given lava is a fluid just like water, is there a possibility of it also having a waterlogged functionality in the future? James_Silvercat (talk) 05:03, 11 September 2021 (UTC)

The main reason waterlogging was added was to prevent people from abusing air pockets in sea temples. Because lava is neither transparent nor contains any dungeons, it is unneeded, and thus vanishingly unlikely to be added. It would be neat, aesthetically speaking, but not worth mentioning in an article. 97.121.196.139 20:36, 26 September 2021 (UTC)

Lava pushes mob in Bedrock Edition

Lava pushes mobs in Bedrock edition. Could anyone change this in version history and remove java edition only tags? 157.46.114.80 09:14, 20 January 2022 (UTC)

Obtaining

[edit source]
Latest comment: 6 December 20224 comments3 people in discussion

Of course lava blocks do not exist as items in Java Edition 1.8+ (14w25a+) but backporting the game to versions 1.7.10 (full) or 14w21b (snapshot) and backwards or modifying (modding) the Item (or Items in 1.13 and onwards) class to obtain them just as a normal block is possible. If you do not believe me, I posted a screenshot of this (the lava block "item" is seen):

This wiki only documents the current condition of game elements. Historical information should only be documented in the "History" subsection. The style guide has a section that explains this rule. Windwend (talk) 18:19, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
Shouldn't even belong to the history subsection. What the user is trying to state is that you can add the item forms for these blocks in 1.8 and later versions by editing the source code, which is completely irrelevant because you're modding the game and it's not vanilla behavior. The item form was removed from the vanilla game in 14w25a, and that's all we have to say.--Capopanzo (talk) 19:40, 5 December 2022 (UTC)

How does item form of water/lava/fire etc. blocks removed? By adding registerItemBlock(blockIn) method, which registers an ItemBlock for respective block (now its name is heavily changed). Addition of this method allowed to remove item form of these blocks by not adding to registered item forms list, including lava. The behavior of lava bubble particles should be added

[edit source]
Latest comment: 21 May 20242 comments2 people in discussion

Lava bubble particles spawn randomly in the game. When they hit an entity, they set the remaining time for the entity to catch fire, causing the entity including players to burn. The behavior of this fire particle needs to be added to the article.

I'm talking about the lava and lava_particle in the entry "particles". Additionally, in Java version, the subtitle "Lava pops" indicates the spawn of these particles. 2409:8A28:3182:3840:1843:183:A2EB:E254 13:40, 18 May 2024 (UTC)

As stated in the article, "The embers or fireballs that fly out of lava are purely decorative and do not cause fires or damage to entities." They are just visual particles (which even completely disappear if the particles option is set to "minimal") and have absolutely no effect on entities or blocks.--Capopanzo (talk | contribs) 21:21, 21 May 2024 (UTC)

Lava#Fire spread - What does "Lava of any depth can start fires this way, whether or not it appears to have a current." mean?

--FeedbackBot 13:47, 3 September 2025 (UTC)
Fixed. See this change: https://minecraft.wiki/?title=Lava&diff=3139565&oldid=3139427. I removed the unencyclopedic sentence and replaced it with a parenthetical clause inserted into the first sentence, using the standard terms "source" and "flowing." Current is used elsewhere in the article to describe the appearance of flowing lava blocks. HolyT (talk) 15:57, 3 September 2025 (UTC)

Wrong bedrock history renders

[edit source]
Latest comment: 18 October 20251 comment1 person in discussion

The renders in the Bedrock history section are incorrect. I attempted to partially fix this and had my edits reverted.

Lava from 0.7.0 until 0.12.1 build 6 looked identical to Java Edition, with a procedurally generated texture using the same algorithm and side shading enabled. The very screenshot I was given when my edit was reverted in fact supports this (note the appearance of the flowing texture in particular). This is why I changed it to use the JE12 render, as it is the closest despite the name being off. 0.12.1 would later remove side shading on lava, but the Java procedural texture was still used at that point (a combination for which a render does not currently exist, hence the "needs images" template in that section). The procedurally generated texture was not replaced with a premade animation until 0.14.2, after side shading had already been turned off.

The supposedly "correct" render for 0.7.0 shows the premade animated texture (again, compare the appearance of the flowing texture with the screenshot) while still having side shading enabled. This combination never existed in any version of the game.

So, there should actually be four different renders here:

  • BE1 - < 0.7.0 - using the placeholder texture (correct)
  • BE2 - >= 0.7.0, < 0.12.1b6 - Java procedural texture with side shading (identical or at least very close to the current JE12)
  • BE3 - >= 0.12.1b6, < 0.14.2 - Java procedural texture with no side shading (no render for this currently exists)
  • BE4 - >= 0.14.2 - pre-animated texture with no side shading (current BE3 render)

All of this was verified by me loading up old PE versions on an android phone a few months ago. I don't currently have the tooling set up to make new renders though, so until someone else is able to do that I feel like it makes the most sense to use the closest existing render here which in this case is the JE12 version. Otherwise I'd worry that someone later going to create updated BE2 and BE3 renders would not realize what it was supposed to look like and get them wrong again. - VRadExe (talk) 20:54, 18 October 2025 (UTC)

lava fall damage

[edit source]
Latest comment: 22 December 20253 comments3 people in discussion

I think this page should mention lava's unique feature as a fluid to partially cushion falls dependent on fall height and thickness of lava layer. if i do some tests could and find out how much it cushions fall damage could i have help adding that data to this page? Basedhelios (talk) 23:32, 19 December 2025 (UTC)

I added some info on lava's ability to absorb fall damage in my latest edit (among other changes). If you want to expand on it, it's in the Other section of the Lava article. https://minecraft.wiki/w/Lava#Other SworderExert (talk) 16:00, 20 December 2025 (UTC)

Lava damage

I am not sure why the damage says 4. In my experience playing Minecraft, I feel like it is 8. Can we make sure we have the correct number? Minecraftking (talk) 14:59, 26 January 2026 (UTC)

Okay maybe Mojang must have changed it. Have you tested without armor? That might cause it to change if you had armor? I’ve read it cause it’s two hearts per damage per half a second and 4 hearts per damage per second. That might be the confusion. Minecraftking (talk) 18:50, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
No armor was used. I'm confident that it is correct. ‑‑MinecraftExp123(talk|contribs) 22:56, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
Okay I agree that it that. I think the misunderstanding is in the text “Most entities take 4HP damage every tick (although damage immunity reduces this to once every half-second) while in contact with lava, and are set on fire” mentions that it is due to the damage immunity rather than the code. Is it true that it is due to damage immunity or is it due to the code of how often lava damages entities? Minecraftking (talk) 01:54, 19 February 2026 (UTC)

Replacing Lava

[edit source]
Latest comment: 8 February2 comments2 people in discussion

I'm looking for information on filling lava lakes. I believe gravel and scaffolding are the quickest/best ways to displace/replace lava blocks? But I'd like some confirmation. Gravel breaks, and doesn't work if soulsoil is underlying a column of lava, if what I've seen is vanilla minecraft.

Just4ender (talk) 20:28, 8 February 2026 (UTC)

It doesn't look like there is a tutorial page for draining lava lakes (unless I missed it) so you could request for a tutorial about it to be made. 👁 Image
